You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The last standing stone stood twice Rory's height and leaned inward like a doorframe built for something much larger than a person. She turned sideways to slip past it anyway. Bark rasped her jacket. Cold ran up her left arm and settled in the small crescent scar on her wrist. Past the oaks, Richmond Park stopped. Not faded. Stopped. Her trainers came down on moss instead of trodden earth, and the moss took the sound out of them. "Glamour." Nyx poured through the gap behind her and gathered upward into their full height, two violet points of light settling where a face should have been. "Old work. Sloppy at the seams." "That's the polite word for it." Isolde stood twenty paces in, silver hair bright as drawn wire against the green. Wildflowers crowded her shins. Blue ones, then white, then a red that had no business blooming in an English autumn. Her feet had pressed nothing into the moss behind her. Rory looked back at the stone ring. Through the gap she caught a slice of the car park, a dog-walker's hi-vis, the sodium smear of a lamp coming on. A whole city going about its Tuesday. The slice narrowed as she breathed and widened when she stopped. "Don't look over your shoulder twice," Isolde said. "The Grove keeps count." "Keeps count of what?" "The looking." She let it go. Isolde answered what she was asked, and Rory had learned within ten minutes of meeting her that the shape of the question mattered more than the words in it. They walked. The light came through the canopy in slabs the colour of weak tea and the air held the day's warmth close, thick with crushed mint and wet stone. No birds. She clocked that on the fourth minute and kept walking. Somewhere behind the mint smell ran something older, mineral and tired, the smell of a cellar that had been shut for a hundred years and opened that morning. Nyx drifted at her shoulder. Where their feet met the ground, the moss stood up in small startled rings and lay back down flat. "The place we're looking for." Rory kept her voice level. "You've been here before." "To the Grove's edge. Not past it." Isolde pushed through a curtain of hanging roots and held them aside with one hand. Her lavender eyes caught the wrong light and gave nothing back. "No one has. That is the trouble with thresholds. They invite and they refuse." The roots she held were thicker than Rory's wrist, sheathed in grey bark, and warm. Not sun warm. Warm the way a hand is warm. Rory pulled her fingers back and wiped them on her jeans. Beyond the curtain the ground tilted down into a hollow she hadn't seen from any angle on the walk in, though they'd been level with it thirty seconds before. Trees grew there in a ring, and their trunks had been cut and stacked and carved so long ago that the cuts had softened into curves. Stone showed through the bark in places. Steps went down between the roots. "Pre-Fae," Nyx said. They had gone still, which for them meant the edges stopped flickering. "This is not Court work." "No." "Then whose?" Isolde descended first. Her silence on the steps did most of the answering. Rory followed. The air changed on the fourth step, a pressure across her eardrums like a lift dropping. Warmth seeped into her collarbone, and she put a hand to the Heartstone under her shirt before she thought about it. The little crimson gem had gone hot against her sternum. Faint heat, pulsing, the way it did when a Hel portal sat within a street or two. "Nyx." "I feel it." Their voice came from a lower register, the whisper dragging over grit. "There is nothing open here. I would know." She left her hand on the pendant and kept going. The passage below ran with a pale seam of light in the stone, no wider than a finger, threading along the walls at hip height and climbing ahead of them like a guide wire. It threw no heat and lit nothing beyond a metre. What it did do was make everything past that metre larger than it should have been. Rory counted her steps past eighty and stopped counting. The walls had been dressed once and left to wear. Carvings ran along them at shoulder height, a procession cut shallow and deep by turns. Horned figures with crowns of branch. Figures with hands raised, palms out. And among them, at intervals she couldn't find the pattern to, a shape cut deepest of all: a body of nothing, no face, no limbs drawn in, and two small round holes where the eyes would go, punched clean through the stone so the pale seam behind bled through them. Nyx stopped walking. The light at their eyes guttered. "I cut this," they said. Rory looked at the wall, then at the shade beside her. "The script above." A ripple went through their outline, shoulder to hip. "It is mine. The letters I invented for my own hand because the Church alphabet was too small for what I was doing. Forty-one of them. I burned the only copy." "You were Aldric." Rory said it flat, the way you set a cup down. "I was careless." They reached toward the carving and their fingers sank into the stone to the second knuckle without resistance. Cold washed across their face-light. "This is older than my name. Older than the Courts' records. It took my alphabet and put it somewhere it should not have been able to reach." Isolde had gone on ahead. Her voice drifted back, clear and unhurried. "What is written finds a wall. What is worn finds a floor." Rory caught up to her at a turn where the passage opened. Isolde stood at the lip of a drop with her silver hair lifting in a draft that came from below and smelled of deep water and cut stems. The chamber under them was the size of a cathedral nave and lit from the floor up. Water ran along channels cut into the stone in ribbons, and where the channels crossed, the water hung instead of falling, folding over itself in sheets that turned slow and caught the seam-light and threw it across the ceiling in drifts. Something grew down from that ceiling. A trunk, pale and smooth, branching as it descended, its roots flaring into the air two metres above the floor and stopping there, holding nothing. Rory's mouth came open and stayed that way. She closed it. "Time," she said. "You said time moves strange here." "I said it moves." Isolde set one foot on the stair that went down into the room. Still no print, no sound. "Whether it moves strange depends on what you wanted from it." "How long have we been under?" "Outside?" Isolde's lavender eyes cut to her, and for once there was no riddle in them at all, just the flat appraisal of something three hundred years old. "Ten minutes. An hour. The difference has a price and I have not paid it." The Heartstone pulsed against Rory's ribs. She held it through her shirt and felt the small steady throb of it, patient as a second heart. Warm. Hel-warm, in a place that smelled of nothing but water and roots and old stone. Nyx came up behind them, their outline thin at the edges where the stone had taken the chill out of them. They looked down at the hanging tree and the sheets of water turning in the air. "The roots want a floor," they said. "Then give them one." Isolde went down the stair. Rory followed, and the water noise swallowed her footsteps one at a time. At the bottom the channels ran past her boots on both sides, clear over pale stone, and in each one something moved with the current that was not the current. Small shapes, bright, turning like coins dropped in a fountain. She crouched and put two fingers into the nearest channel. Ice climbed her wrist to the scar. The bright thing turned toward her hand and she saw it for what it was: a face, small as a thumbnail, eyes shut, mouth open around a word it had been saying since before the wall upstairs was cut. Rory took her fingers out. "Isolde." "Yes." "There are people in the water." "Yes." The half-Fae stood beneath the hanging trunk with her palm flat against the pale bark and her head tilted, listening to something inside it. "There have always been people in the water. You are simply the first to arrive while they are still speaking."
