You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

A character is alone in a strange, isolated place at night. They came here for a reason, but something feels off from the moment they arrive. The wrongness builds slowly — sounds that shouldn't be there, things that move at the edge of vision, a growing certainty that they are not alone. Build tension through restraint, not through gore. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for the character and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary. </instructions>

Rory pushed through the last of the oaks and the grove opened around her like a held breath. Wildflowers caught the moon in white and violet heads, a carpet of them between the standing stones, blooming out of season and out of sense. She'd read about places like this in her father's old books of Celtic law, back when she still sat at the kitchen table in Cardiff pretending she wanted to be a barrister. Boundary places. Liminal ground. The kind of place where a person could stand with one foot in the world and one foot somewhere else and the courts had no jurisdiction over what happened next. She hadn't come here for folklore. She'd come because Eva's voice message had ended mid-word, and because the last forty seconds of it carried a sound like wind chimes in a room with no windows. The pendant sat against her collarbone, cool as river glass. It had been cool since Richmond Park. Since the gate. "Rory. Breathe." Her own voice came out smaller than she wanted. She pulled her phone from her jacket pocket and checked the bars. Nothing. She'd expected nothing. She raised the screen anyway and swept its weak light across the stones. Seven of them, each taller than her, sunk into the earth at uneven intervals like rotten teeth. Oak, she thought, though the grain ran in spirals no oak grew in. Moss furred their flanks and the moss moved in the breeze. Except there was no breeze. The flower heads hung dead still and the cold touched her face from everywhere at once, the way cold does in a room where a door stands open behind you. She turned. The oaks she'd walked through stood where she'd left them. Between their trunks, black and depthless. "Eva!" The grove took the name. It did not give back an echo. Every other sound she'd made since stepping past the stones had come back at her — footfalls, the click of her boot on flint, her own breath — but the name sank into the ground and stopped. The pendant warmed against her skin. Not the steady room-temperature warmth of a thing that has been worn all day. A pulse. A low throb of heat in time with something, and she stood very still and counted, because counting was a thing she could do, and the count matched nothing she could name. Not her heartbeat. Slower than that. Patient. She moved off between the stones. Keeping them to her left shoulder the way she'd read you should keep a wall in the dark, so that whatever came at you came from one direction only. The wildflowers crushed under her boots and released a smell like honey and iron. Behind her, in the place she'd just been standing, something shifted in the grass. She stopped. The sound stopped with her — the drag and hush of weight moving through stems. She counted again. Four seconds. Ten. The cold sat in her lungs. Rory walked on. Faster. The pendant's heat climbed toward uncomfortable and she hooked a finger under the chain to hold it off her skin, and even through the silver it pulsed, hot then cool then hot again, and her hand came away damp though the gem itself was dry. Something giggled. She locked her knees so she wouldn't run. The sound had come from up among the standing stones, high as the height of a person sitting on their shoulders, and it was the giggling of a child who has hidden somewhere excellent and can no longer bear the suspense. It lasted less than a second. Then the grove closed over the silence like water. Her phone screen died. She slapped the side of it. Pressed the button. Pressed it harder. The battery had read forty-one percent at the gate and now the phone sat in her palm inert and warm, the same warmth as the pendant, the same pulsing heat of something alive and foreign. She shoved it away and stood in the dark with the moon coming down through the canopy in grey coins, and her eyes adjusted, and the grove arranged itself into shapes again. The flowers had turned. She was sure of it. She had walked a straight line from the oaks toward the tallest stone and the flowers had faced her as she passed, pale throats upturned, and now every single head of every single bloom had swivelled toward the dark at the centre of the grove, where she had not yet looked, the way a field of dishes turns to catch the sun. "Okay," she said. "Okay." She said it the way she said it to hungover customers at the Golden Empress who couldn't find their own wallets. Flat. Practical. A sound to put between herself and everything else. A branch cracked in the canopy above. Another answered it, ten metres along. Then a third, and she mapped the sound as it moved, and the map drew a shape she did not like: someone heavy and unhurried walking the tops of the oaks in a slow circle around the clearing, and doing it without stopping when she stopped. The crescent scar on her left wrist itched. She pressed her thumb into it and the itch went deep, went into the bone, and she pulled her sleeve down over her hand. Wind chimes. Faint and thin and off to her right, where the standing stones began to crowd and the wildflowers grew in tangles chest-high. The same sound as the tail of Eva's message. The sound of it moved, drifting, and she tracked it through the dark because it was the only thing in the grove that behaved like a sound should behave, rising and falling with distance, and when it stopped it stopped in one place and stayed there and waited. She pushed into the flowers. Stems caught at her jeans. The honey-and-iron smell thickened until she breathed through her mouth and the taste of it sat on the back of her tongue. The pendant burned. Between two of the oak stones, at the height of her knee, someone had built a little house out of flint chips and bone. She looked at it. A door had been carved into the front and the door stood open and inside the door was a blackness that her eyes refused to resolve, and her hands began to shake and she did not bend down to look closer because she understood that the flint had been cut with tools and the bone was small and white and had come from something with fingers. "Hiding won't help you, love. I can smell where you've been standing." The voice came from everywhere and nowhere and it came out of a mouth too wide for the face it belonged to. She knew this without seeing it, the way you know the shape of a thing from its shadow. It spoke in a Cardiff lilt she hadn't heard since she'd left home and it spoke her mother's pet name for her and it giggled after, that same wet child's giggle, but closer now, close enough that the sound moved the hairs on her cheek. Rory did not run. She thought of the fifty-eight steps back to the oaks and she thought about what the grove would do with a person who ran, and she squared her boots in the loam and put her hand flat over the pendant and said, "Where is she?" The flowers turned again. All of them. Away from the centre and toward Rory. Time moved strange here. An hour inside could be minutes or days outside. Eva had been gone three days. Or four minutes. Or long enough that the thing that had learned to speak in her mother's voice had finished with her and gone looking for company. Something at the edge of the clearing shifted its weight from one foot to the other and the wildflowers there bent under it and straightened and bent again as it settled, patient, in no hurry at all. Rory kept her hand on the pendant and did not look toward the sound and did not look away from it either, and the heat under her palm climbed, and the grove held its breath around her like a living thing.
