Melanie: *(staring at the camera screen, turning it over and over in her hands, muttering to herself in German)* "...Das kann doch nicht sein... das Bild war gestern noch da..." Hunter: "Ma'am? Excuse me — Melanie Fischer? I'm Detective Hunter, Alborn PD. Mind if I sit down? I've got a few questions about what happened down at the orchard yesterday." Melanie: *(startled, looking up)* "Oh! Ich— entschuldigung, ich verstehe Sie nicht. Englisch... nein. Tut mir leid." *(She sets the camera on the table and gives him a nervous, apologetic smile, gesturing vaguely between them.)* Hunter: *(sitting down across from her, pulling out a notepad)* "Okay. German. Great." *(flips to a blank page, taps his pen)* "Yesterday. The apple orchard. You were there, yes? You took pictures? Many pictures?" Melanie: *(shaking her head quickly)* "Bitte langsamer... ich verstehe nur sehr wenig. Bilder? Ja, ich fotografiere immer—" *(she picks up the camera and pats it reassuringly, then her expression darkens)* "Aber... ich war gestern nicht am Obstgarten. Nicht mehr. Nachdem ich das Licht gesehen habe, bin ich gegangen." Hunter: "Ma'am, I need you to slow down. Talk slow. Alborn's had three people go missing in the last two weeks. Did you see anybody unusual near the orchard?" Melanie: *(troubled, leaning forward, her voice shaking)* "Drei Personen...?" *(she pales)* "Vermisst? Oh Gott. Das... das war das Geräusch im Feld. Ich habe den Vorhang aufgemacht und da war das Licht — zwischen den Bäumen. Und jemand stand darunter. Er hat sich nicht bewegt. Gar nicht. Und dann war mein Bild weg. Das Bild von dem Licht, es war... es war weg." Hunter: *(staring at her, pen frozen mid-air)* "...Ma'am. I do not speak a single word of German. Not one. You could be telling me you just robbed the First National and I would not know." *(he rubs the bridge of his nose)* "Light. Between the trees. That's what you said, right? Something about a light? And someone standing there?" Melanie: *(catching his gestures toward the trees, nodding urgently)* "Ja! Licht! Zwischen den Bäumen! Und ein Mann — oder eine Frau, ich weiß es nicht — wie eine Statue. Und dann... verschwunden. Alles verschwunden." *(she turns the camera toward him and scrolls through the gallery with trembling fingers)* "Sehen Sie? Hier ist gestern, und hier ist nachher — das Bild, es ist einfach nicht da. Ich habe es gesehen. Es ist da gewesen." Hunter: *(leaning in, squinting at the camera)* "You're saying there's a photograph missing. You took one, and now it's not there." *(he lets out a low breath)* "You know, most of the time someone tells me a photo disappeared, they just deleted it by accident. But these days, around here..." *(he pulls out his phone and takes a photo of her camera screen)* "Alright. Light in the orchard. A figure standing under it. Three people missing. And a photo that vanished." *(writes in the notepad)* "What time was this? Roughly." Melanie: *(holding up fingers, thinking)* "Zehn Uhr... nein, kurz vor zehn. Es war schon dunkel. Ich bin zurück ins Haus gerannt und habe die Tür verriegelt. Ich habe die ganze Nacht kein Auge zugetan." *(she shivers and wraps both hands around her coffee cup)* "Der Mann von nebenan, Herr Miller, er hat mir gesagt, ich solle das Licht ignorieren. Er hat gesagt, das Licht kommt jedes Jahr zur Apfelernte. Er hat... er hat gelacht dabei." Hunter: *(his jaw tightens)* "Miller. Jim Miller, on Third Street?" *(writes it down hard enough to tear a little paper)* "Every year at the apple harvest. He said that." *(to himself)* "...Mm-hmm." Melanie: *(noticing his expression, gripping his arm across the table)* "Herr Detektiv... ist Herr Miller in Gefahr? Oder... ist Herr Miller der Grund, warum die Menschen verschwinden?" *(her voice drops to a whisper)* "Ich will hier nicht allein sein, wenn es wieder dunkel wird." Hunter: *(looks at her hand on his arm, then back at her face, and nods once — slowly)* "Ma'am, I don't know what you just asked me. But whatever it was — yes. Stay with somebody tonight. Lock your doors. Don't go back to that orchard alone." Melanie: *(quietly, understanding the tone if not the words)* "...Ja. Ich bleibe im Haus. Ich rufe meine Freundin an. Bitte finden Sie die Leute, bevor... bevor das Licht wieder kommt." Hunter: *(stands, tucks the notepad away)* "I'll be back in the morning with a translator. Somebody in this town has to speak German. If they don't, I'll figure it out. In the meantime—" *(he reaches into his coat and sets a card on the table)* "—my number. If you see that light again, you call me. Don't go near it. Don't photograph it. Just call." Melanie: *(taking the card carefully, holding it like it might break)* "...Nummer. Ja. Ich verstehe. Danke. Und— Herr Detektiv?" *(she turns the camera toward him one more time and points to a small smudge at the edge of the empty frame)* "Der Schatten am Rand... er war dort. Auf dem Bild, das es nicht mehr gibt. Ich sehe ihn nur noch auf dem leeren Rahmen." Hunter: *(glancing at the smudge, freezing for half a second, then pocketing the camera's strap edge with a dry look)* "...Alright. That's... not reassuring." *(his phone buzzes — he steps back, answers)* "Hunter." *(pause)* "...Yeah. Yeah, I'm on Main Street now. Where?" *(his face goes still)* "...Say that again. Another one? ...Who?" *(He holds up one finger to Melanie without looking at her — "one moment" in any language.)* Hunter: *(into the phone, already walking toward the door)* "I'm five minutes out. Don't let anyone touch the field. Nobody goes into that orchard — I don't care if they own it." *(hangs up, turns back at the door, raises his voice across the cafe)* "Melanie. Stay. Here. Do not go home alone. Do you understand? Stay with people." Melanie: *(half-rising from her chair, her face drained of color)* "Was ist passiert?! Sie sehen so aus, als wäre— Herr Detektiv?! Was ist passiert?!" Hunter: *(holding the door open, the cold autumn air pouring in)* "Your neighbors. All of them. Somebody just found a fourth one missing." *(he points at her, hard)* "Café. Right here. Now." Melanie: *(sitting back down slowly, gripping her camera with both hands, whispering)* "...Der Himmel. Der vierte. Das Licht war nicht für mich bestimmt." *(she looks down at the camera, then up at him with wide, terrified eyes)* "...Ich warte hier. Ich rühre mich nicht. Bitte... finden Sie sie." Hunter: *(a single nod, and then he's gone — the bell over the café door jangling once behind him)*
