You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The Heartstone had turned hot against Rory's collarbone an hour before they found the seam. She stopped walking and pressed two fingers to the gem through her shirt. Heat pulsed back, slow as a second heartbeat. Ahead of her, Nyx's silhouette solidified from the dark between two oaks, six feet of shadow with violet embers where eyes should have been. "You feel it." Nyx's voice arrived on a draught of cold air. "It's burning a hole in me." "The thin place," Isolde said. She stood on the path they had taken, silver hair spilling over her shoulders, and the pine needles beneath her bare feet held no mark. "A door that remembers being a wound. Step through and it closes behind you like water." She did not smile when she said it. She never smiled at the things that sounded like jokes. Rory pulled the pendant out. The crimson stone threw a red smear of light across her palm, and the crescent scar on her wrist stood out pale in it. Twenty feet ahead the air between two standing oaks bent the way a spoon bends in a full cup — everything behind it doubled, then slid. Nyx moved first. The shadow stretched, thinned to smoke, and poured through the bend in the air. "Soft," their whisper drifted back. "The ground is soft." Rory set her teeth and walked in. Amber. The sky was amber, low and heavy as the inside of a lantern, and it had no sun in it. She stood on a hill of dark loam that smelled of crushed fruit and warm bread, and the air pressed against her bare arms the way bathwater presses — thick, sweet, weighted. Below her the land fell away in long green combs: vineyards stitched in rows, orchards knotted with heavy crowns, garden upon garden climbing toward a horizon that shimmered and refused to settle. "What in God's name," Rory said. Nyx gathered back into a shape beside her and the ground around them darkened in four directions at once. Their shadow smeared outward, north, south, east and west, thin as spilled ink, refusing to pick one. "There is no single light here," they murmured. "I cannot find the floor of my own darkness." Rory reached out and caught a handful of shadow. It resisted her, then tugged, then let go. Behind them, the shimmer in the air folded shut with a wet sound. Isolde stepped through and stood on the loam with her arms loose at her sides, and her lavender eyes widened at the sky. "So the stories kept some of it," she said. "You haven't been here." Rory looked at her. "You told me you'd never set foot in Hel." "Feet, no." Isolde bent and turned a vine leaf over with one finger. The underside ran blue where the top ran green, and the veins stood out like wire. "My grandmother spoke of it. She described the sky wrong. She said gold." The leaf curled toward Isolde's hand. She took her finger away and it stayed curled, reaching. Rory crouched at the row's edge. Fat fruit hung in clusters, each one the size of a plum, and none of them the same colour — one bruised purple, one the yellow of egg yolk, one pale and clear as a glass of water with a seed floating at its centre. She touched the clear one and it rocked on its stem. Cold. Everything else in this place ran warm and that one ran cold. "Careful," Isolde said from behind her. "The fruit?" "Knowing what a thing is." Rory drew her hand back and touched the Fae blade at her belt instead. Moonsilver, leaf-shaped, cold even through the leather wrap. In the amber light it stayed dull and dark. No moon here to wake it. They went down the hill along a rutted track where the loam had been turned and turned again by something heavy. The track's edges were trimmed sharp. Somebody's garden. Somebody's farm. A hundred yards on, the vines gave way to a stand of trees with bark the colour of bread crust, and hanging from every branch, lit from inside, fruit glowed like paper lanterns in greens and golds and one deep furious red. Rory stopped under the first tree. Warmth came off the fruit onto her face. "They breathe," Nyx whispered. They had gone thin again, weaving between trunks where the light fell worst for them. "The trees breathe. Listen." She listened. Under the hum of the air, under the far-off clatter of something like a kitchen at full rush, the orchard drew breath in and let it out. Branches rose a finger's width and sank. Bark creaked. "And the ground has no memory of us," Nyx went on. Their voice flattened against the loam where their bare feet touched, and the soil held no print at all — not Isolde's, not Nyx's. Only Rory's boots left marks, and even those filled in slow, like syrup closing over a dropped spoon. She walked faster to keep ahead of her own vanishing tracks. The track bent left and dropped into a cutting walled with trellises. Here the noise found them. Metal on metal. Shouting in a language that arrived in her ear as sense and left as nonsense. A smell like caramel a second before it burns, and under it something green and electric that made her back teeth ache. Rory pulled the pendant out again. It had stopped pulsing. It sat against her palm steady and hot as a coin left on a radiator. "Something here feeds it," she said. "Something here was made by the same hands," Isolde answered. She walked the cutting's lip without looking down at Rory, and her silver hair lifted and fell in a wind Rory couldn't feel. "A gift carries the shape of its giver. Warmth answers warmth. Keep walking and let it answer." They came out of the cutting onto a terrace cut into the hillside, and Rory's step broke. Long tables ran the terrace end to end, forty feet, sixty, loaded past bearing. Roasted birds with lacquered skin. Wheels of cheese taller than a man's torso, split to show the blue running through. Bread stacked in towers, some loaves still steaming, others gone grey at the crust with age. Fruit in silver dishes. Fish on ice. Meats she had no name for, plated on leaves, glazed, charred, raw and crawling with a spice that moved. Not all of it was fresh. Ten feet down the table a suckling pig sat upright with a rind like old leather. Beside it a jelly had collapsed into a brown lake. Flies — or things shaped like flies, too large, with wings that clicked rather than buzzed — worked the decay in a slow orbit. "Gluttony keeps no clock," Isolde said. At the far end of the terrace, figures moved. Rory's hand went to the blade. Chefs. Six of them, seven, in stained whites, working a row of open fires with their backs to the newcomers. They moved in that fast lockstep of people who have cooked together for years — one turned a spit, one basted, one bent to the flame with a handful of something that threw green sparks. Their sleeves were rolled. Their forearms showed brands, healed to shiny rope, in shapes like knots of vine. Nobody looked up. Nobody slowed. "They were called," Isolde said, quieter than before. "Contracted. Bound by appetite and the promise of ingredients no mortal soil grows." One of the chefs lifted his head at the far end. He was grey at the temples and thin through the shoulders, and he looked at Rory the way a man looks at a bus he has missed. His mouth opened. The man beside him said something in that half-language and struck his arm, and the grey-haired man turned back to the spit and never looked again. Rory's throat had gone dry against all that sweetness. "They can't leave," she said. "They cook," Isolde said. "Whether they leave is a different question and a longer road. Walk." Nyx peeled away from Rory's shadow and flowed up the terrace wall to the top of the trellis, where the light was worst for them and their edges smoked. "There is more below," their whisper came down. "Rows and rows. Fires the length of the hill. A crowd gathering at the far field with aprons and blades. Whatever this place is doing tonight, it is doing it large." The pendant pulsed once against Rory's palm — one thick beat — and settled. She wrapped her hand around it and kept walking along the terrace, past the tower bread and the moving spice and the flies that clicked, past the chef who did not look up a second time. At the terrace's end the ground fell away and she stopped at a low wall of stacked stone. Beyond it the valley opened. Vineyards stitched to the horizon. Orchards burning with lantern-fruit. Roads of pale dust threading between gardens where the colours ran wrong — silver-leafed, black-flowered, one whole field of green so bright it rang. Smoke rose from a hundred cooking fires and hung flat under the amber ceiling without dispersing. Somewhere a crowd roared and a bell began to clang, and the sound carried across the valley the way it carries across water at night. Her pendant beat against her ribs in time with the bell. "Alright," Rory said, and did not know yet what she meant by it.
