You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The standing stones came out of the dark like the knuckles of something buried. Rory stopped at the tree line and counted them — seven oaks, each one wide as a London black cab, their bark split into ridges that caught the last of the afternoon light and threw it back wrong, in colours that had no name in particular. Between two of them the air shimmered, a faint distortion, as if heat were rising off tarmac on a day that wasn't warm. "That's it?" she said. "That is the door," said Isolde. She stood a pace ahead, silver hair falling untroubled to her waist, hands folded. She had not crossed the threshold yet, and Rory understood, with the cool small click of a mind that had spent three years studying the law, that she was waiting to be asked. "Whether it is *it* depends on which side of it you are standing." Behind Rory, something that had been a man in 1643 shifted its weight. Nyx did not have weight, exactly — more the memory of it. In the failing light they were a tall silhouette, edges blurred like ink dropped in water, two faint violet points where a face ought to have been. "The Veil," Nyx whispered, and the voice arrived from everywhere at once, a draught under a door. "It thins here. It has been thinning since October." "Winter solstice," Rory said. "It weakens." Isolde's pale lavender eyes moved to her, and the corner of her mouth did something that was not quite a smile. "You have been reading." "Rory reads everything." That was her own voice, dry and flat, coming from the shadow at her shoulder. Nyx tilted their head — an unnecessary gesture, given they had no neck — and Rory felt rather than heard the amusement in it. She went through first. The cold of the threshold lasted exactly one breath and then vanished, replaced by warmth that had weight to it, that pressed on her eardrums. The sky on the other side was the colour of late honey, though the sun was nowhere she could find, and the grass beneath her boots came up to her shins, green in a way that suggested it had never once been trodden down. Wildflowers pushed through it in impossible densities — foxglove and snowdrop and orchids that should have needed weeks of frost to open — all of them blooming at once, all of them turning, very slightly, to watch her pass. Rory stopped walking. "They're not turning toward the light," she said. "There isn't any light." "There isn't," Isolde agreed, stepping through behind her without a sound, without a print in the wet ground. She left no impression at all, as though the grass declined to know she had been there. "They are turning toward *you*. The Grove is curious. It has not had a visitor who was not expected in a very long time." NyxCame through as shadow first — a ribbon of dark flowing between the oaks — and then gathered upward into their solid form, taller than the low sweep of an oak bough that hung overhead. Their violet eyes went wide, the glow in them brightening until it was nearly white. "Sixty-one years," they said softly. "I stood on the other side of a door like this, once, and it took my body from me." Rory did not know what to say to that, so she put her hand on the flat of the blade at her belt. The moonsilver was cold even through the leather — it was always cold, a leaf-shaped sliver of Fae work that Isolde had pressed into her palm three nights ago on a London pavement with the words *you will need something that does not care about wards*. The cold steadied her. It always did. She felt the small crescent scar on her left wrist pull as she flexed her fingers, a old familiar ache. They went deeper. The grove opened in stages, the way a piece of music does. First a ring of birch, white as bone, their leaves rattling in a wind that moved nothing else. Then a hollow where the grass gave way to moss so thick it swallowed sound — Rory's boots made no noise, Nyx's whispers came back muted, and even Isolde's voice dropped to something barely above thought. In the hollow lay stones arranged in a pattern that meant nothing to Rory until she climbed the low ridge of earth at its edge and looked down, and the pattern resolved into a spiral, and the spiral resolved into a shape like a keyhole. "Don't," said Isolde, as Rory's boot came down over the ridge. Rory lifted it again. "That's a trap." "That is a *question*," said Isolde. "The answer to it is not yours to give yet." Her pale eyes held Rory's for a long moment. "You cannot lie to me, little one. Neither can I to you. What I say next is the truth: the last person who answered it is still here, and has been for four hundred years, and does not wish to be found." The moss swallowed the rest of the sound. Somewhere beneath them, far down, something turned over in its sleep. They went on. The air thickened with scent — not one scent but hundreds layered on top of each other, orchard and loam and something hot and spiced that Rory's stomach recognised before her mind did, a smell like Yu-Fei Cheung's kitchen on a Friday night multiplied by a hundred, and her mouth flooded with saliva and her feet slowed of their own accord. "That," Nyx said, and their whisper had gone rough, "is Dymas bleed. Vineyards. The realm of Gluttony presses against this place the way a tongue presses against a loose tooth." The violet points of their eyes flickered. "I can smell the feasts. Chefs contracted from your world. They cook there for eternity and call it paradise." Rory's hand went, without her deciding, to the pendant at her throat. The Heartstone had been warm when she woke that morning; it was warm now, a faint pulse against her collarbone, deep crimson and thumb-sized and pulsing faintly with an inner glow that showed best in shadow. It had been warm since they crossed the threshold. "It's close," she said. "A portal. It's close to here." "Yes," said Isolde. "You knew." "I know many things, Aurora Carter. Knowing is not the same as telling." She walked on, her silver hair catching light that did not exist, leaving no footprints behind her in the moss, in the mud, in the fallen petals that lay too thickly to be counted. "The Grove sits between. That is its nature. To be between is to touch everything and belong to nothing." Rory looked back the way they had come. The standing stones were gone — not distant, *gone*, the honey-coloured sky closing over the space where the threshold had been, and she understood with a lurch in her chest that an hour in here might be minutes out there, or days, and that Silas' bar would still be open when she got back, or would have been shut for a week, and that Yu-Fei would count the difference either way. She faced forward again. The wildflowers were still watching her. In the middle distance, a pair of deer stood with their heads raised, and their eyes were the pale lavender of Isolde's, and they did not blink. "Keep moving," Rory said, and her own voice came out steady, which was something, given the rest of her. She drew the moonsilver blade an inch from its sheath, felt the cold bite into her palm, and stepped down into the flowers, which parted for her without complaint, and followed the seer and the shade into the heart of a place that had been waiting, she suspected, far longer than any of them were prepared for.
