You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The portal spat them out onto soil that gave like dough. Rory's trainers sank to the laces. She staggered, caught herself on a tree trunk, and yanked her hand back when the bark flexed under her palm, warm and faintly damp, like the crust of a loaf pulled too early from the oven. "Right. That's horrible." Behind her, the tear in the air sealed with a sound like a sheet of baking paper crumpling. The Heartstone Pendant throbbed against her sternum, hot enough that she pinched the chain and lifted it clear of her skin. The crimson gem pulsed twice more, then settled into a sullen glow. Nyx poured out of the gap last, a smear of darkness that should have pooled at her feet. It didn't. It hung in the air, ragged at the edges, and the violet points of their eyes flickered. "There is too much light." Their voice came thinner here, a draught under a door rather than wind through a forest. Rory looked up. The sky had no sun. It glowed from every direction at once, the deep amber of honey held up to a window, and the light fell on everything without casting a single shadow. Not beneath the trees. Not beneath her own feet. She turned a slow circle and found no dark patch anywhere, not even in the crook of her elbow. "You all right?" "I am being read." Nyx drew inward, their silhouette tightening until it approached the shape of a tall man, then held. "Every edge of me. There is nowhere to fold." Isolde stepped past them both. The soil did not dent beneath her bare feet, and the grass, if the blue-green fuzz carpeting the ground counted as grass, didn't bend. Her silver hair hung straight down her back, untouched by any breeze, though Rory could hear leaves stirring overhead. "The Seer walks where she has only dreamed." Isolde tilted her head at the canopy. "And the dream was kinder with its colours." "Is that a yes or a no on this being the right place?" "It is the place. Whether it is right depends on what you came to take from it." Rory bit back a reply and followed her gaze. The trees stretched in rows so even they could have been ruled onto graph paper, marching over a gentle swell of land and out of sight. Fruit hung from every branch. Not apples. Not pears. Globes the size of a fist, their skins shifting between plum and rose-gold as she watched, each one beaded with droplets that caught the amber glow. The branches sagged under them. One fruit, heavier than the rest, split along a seam as she stared, and a thread of syrup the colour of liquid garnet slid down and dripped onto the soil. The ground drank it with a soft, wet click. The smell hit her a second later. Caramelised sugar. Browning butter. Something sharp and green beneath it, like crushed basil, and under all of that the deep, rich note of meat roasting over wood. Her stomach clenched so hard she pressed a hand to it. Saliva flooded her mouth. "I ate before we left." She swallowed. "Two bao and a spring roll. Yu-Fei made me." "It is not your hunger." Nyx drifted closer, their outline wavering. "It is borrowed. The air carries it the way water carries cold." "Can it be un-borrowed?" "Don't eat anything, and it will stay a guest rather than a tenant." Isolde had already started walking. Rory hitched her backpack higher and went after her, Nyx gliding at her shoulder. Every step sucked at her trainers. She tried the path between the rows instead, a strip of pale gravel, and discovered the gravel crunched like sugar crystals. She crouched, pinched some up, rolled it between her fingers. It left her skin tacky. "Don't," Nyx whispered. "I wasn't going to lick it." "You were thinking about it." She wiped her fingers on her jeans and didn't argue. The rows ended at a low stone wall, its capstones worn smooth and sticky with centuries of spilled juice. Beyond it the land fell away into a valley, and Rory stopped with one hand on the stone. Vineyards ran down the slopes in terraces, hundreds of them, each vine taller than a person and heavy with grapes as dark as bruises. Channels cut between the terraces carried something that wasn't water. It moved too slow and gleamed too red, and where it pooled at the bottom of each level it steamed, filling the valley with a haze that smelled of mulled wine and cloves. Figures moved among the vines. Dozens of them. They wore aprons and carried baskets on their hips, and they worked without pause, fingers flicking grapes from stems in a rhythm that never broke. Across the valley, a structure rose from the far hillside. Rory needed a moment to understand its scale. Arches, tier upon tier, open to the sky, their stonework the cream-yellow of old ivory. Smoke curled from a hundred chimneys along its roofline. Faint and far, carried on the syrupy air, came the chime of bells, then the roar of voices, then bells again. "Is that a kitchen?" "That is a hall." Isolde rested her fingertips on the wall beside Rory's hand. "The kitchen is beneath it, and beneath that, another. Belphegor's cooks never see the tables they serve." "You've seen this before?" "I have seen it the way a fish sees the shore. Once, through water, and never with lungs." Rory reached into her jacket and closed her fingers around the hilt of the Fae blade. The moonsilver bit cold through the leather wrapping, the only cold thing in this whole sweating world, and she held on to it. No luminescence stirred along its edge. No moon to wake it. "Still with me, Nyx?" "I am here." Their eyes had dimmed to pinpricks. "Less of me than I would like." A figure detached itself from the nearest terrace and climbed toward them. A woman, short and broad-shouldered, grey hair scraped back under a kerchief. Her apron had once been white. Now it bore stains in every shade from saffron to claret. She carried a basket of grapes on one hip, and as she came closer Rory saw the mark on the inside of her forearm: a ring of script burned into the skin, the letters shifting and resettling like ants. The woman stopped a few yards off. Her eyes moved from Rory to Isolde and lingered on Nyx, and her lips pressed together. "You lot aren't on the rota." Her accent landed like a punch. Yorkshire, broad and unmistakable. Rory's grip loosened on the blade. "No. We're, uh. Visiting." "Nobody visits." The woman shifted the basket. "They either come to cook or come to eat, and you don't look like you're here to cook." "What if we're neither?" "Then you're lost, love, and you want to get un-lost sharpish." She jerked her chin at the hall across the valley. "Tasting starts at the third bell. Everything above the terraces gets swept clean before the judges walk through. Fruit, pickers, strays. All of it." "Swept where?" The woman didn't answer. She glanced down at the brand on her arm, and the letters crawled faster. Isolde stepped forward. The woman flinched back, eyes dropping to the untouched gravel beneath the Seer's feet. "How long have you picked these vines?" "Since I signed." The woman's jaw worked. "Nineteen seventy-eight, it was, when I signed. Can't tell you what year it is now. Can't tell you what year it is up there, either." "Twenty twenty-four," Rory offered. The woman laughed, a short bark with no humour in it. "Is it. Is it now." She set the basket down on the wall and wiped her hands on her apron, leaving new streaks. "I had a restaurant in Leeds. Best Sunday roast in the West Riding, people said. Wanted it to be the best in the world. Some fella in a good suit told me he could make that happen." She plucked a single grape from the basket and held it up to the amber sky. It glowed from within, a tiny lantern. "Now I pick these for a man I've never seen, to make a sauce I'll never taste." The bells rang again across the valley. Two strikes. The woman's head snapped round. She snatched up her basket. "That's second bell. You've not got long." "Wait." Rory stepped toward her. "The pendant. Does this mean anything to you?" She held up the Heartstone. It flared crimson, brighter than it had since the portal, and the woman went still. For a moment nobody moved. The grapes in the basket began to hum, a low, sweet vibration Rory felt in her back teeth. Down in the valley, the pickers on the nearest terraces straightened one by one and turned their faces upward, toward the wall, toward the light swelling in Rory's hand. The woman's voice dropped to a whisper. "Where in God's name did you get that?"
