You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The rain had leaned against The Raven's Nest since noon, and by nine it had emptied the bar of everyone but a regular called Fitch, who slept upright with a half-finished crossword. Rory polished glasses behind the counter and watched the green sign outside smear itself across the wet pavement. Silas sat at the far end of the bar, his bad knee propped on a stool, the silver signet ring tapping the wood while he read the racing pages of a paper three days old. The door opened without the bell getting a proper grip on it. A man stood in the doorway longer than a man should, water sheeting off his coat, and looked at the maps on the walls as though checking them against something he'd memorised. "Hello, Si." Silas didn't turn right away. His ring stopped tapping. "Merrick." He faced the door at last, and his eyes went over the man the way they went over everything, top to bottom, missing nothing. "You always did walk quiet for a big man." "I'm not a big man anymore." That was true in a way that made Rory reach for a clean cloth and find urgent work with it. The man hung his coat on the stand and it hung off him, a flag on a still day. He was grey in the way paper goes grey, and his hands, when he set them on the bar, kept a small tremble that he watched with something like embarrassment. Merrick crossed the floor and took the stool two down from Silas, leaving the space between them like a border neither had the papers to cross. "You kept the bar." "You found it." "I found it twenty years ago." Merrick looked at the shelf, the bottles, the mirror. "Stood under your green sign one night in the rain. Then I walked to the station and caught the train home." "Why?" "Because you'd have asked how I was, and I'd have said fine, and you'd have known." He glanced at Silas, and for a moment something young moved through the grey. "You always knew." Rory set a beermat in front of him. "What are you having?" "Nothing, thank you. Water, if it's no trouble." "He used to drink the bar," Silas told her. "Top to bottom. There's a dent in the ceiling of a pub in Lisbon that's entirely his." "The bar and I broke up." Merrick folded his hands. "It was mutual." Silas studied him the way he studied the racing pages, looking for the form beneath the name. His eyes went to the tremble, then the wrists, then the coat still dripping on the stand. "How long?" "They said spring." Merrick shrugged. "I've negotiated for the summer." Rory brought the water and retreated to her end of the bar, where she could watch the two of them in the mirror without being caught at it. She rubbed the crescent scar on her wrist without noticing she was doing it. "Rory." Silas tipped his head toward her. "Top shelf, back corner. The one wearing the dust." She fetched a squat bottle with a faded label, ink gone to ghosts, Czech words she couldn't read. It had a weight to it that had nothing to do with the liquid. Silas set it on the bar between them like an exhibit. "Merrick carried that through customs in ninety-nine. Slivovice. A gift, he said, for the day the paperwork stopped." He worked the cork with his thumb. "It's been waiting for a celebration." "Some celebration." "It's seen worse." The cork crumbled like old bread. Silas blew the dust of it away and poured two glasses anyway, the liquor gone amber with the years, and pushed one across the border into Merrick's country. Merrick put his palm flat over the glass. "I can't." "One won't hurt you." "No. Something else has that job." Silas lifted his own glass and didn't drink yet, just held it, turning it so the neon caught the colour. "The room through the bookshelf still there?" "Still there." Merrick almost smiled. "Still empty most nights, I'd wager." "Some things you can rely on." Silas drank. Set the glass down. "Half the section's gone, you know. You missed the funerals." "I heard about most of them. Dawson. The Ashworth woman." "Two years back. Packed church." "I bet it wasn't." Silas's mouth bent. "Four people and a vicar who thought it was a different service." The laugh that came out of Merrick was thin and surprised him, and it cost him something, and he put a hand flat on his chest until it passed. Rory pretended to inventory the tonic water. "You've got a photograph up there," Merrick said, tilting his head at the black-and-white frames crowding the wall. "Lisbon conference. I'm just out of frame. I stood on a chair once and looked. My elbow's in it." "You always were good at being just out of frame." Silas said it without any edge at all, and the sentence sat on the bar between the two glasses, and neither of them looked at it. "Have you been back?" Merrick asked. "To Prague." "No." "I went. Last spring. Walked past the house. The stairwell's still there." He turned his water glass a quarter-turn. "They've put a lift in." "Progress." "Isn't it just." Merrick looked at his own hands. "I went out the window, Si. You know that. Protocol said window, and the window was clear, and I stood on the sill and I looked down and you were on the stairs with your leg gone wrong under you, and I went anyway." "The window was the right call." "I know." His voice came apart on the second word. He steadied it. "That's what I've carried for twenty-six years. Not the wrong thing. The right one." Silas turned his signet ring once around his finger. "You sent the team back for me," he said. "Nobody asked you to. It cost you the posting, I heard." "It cost me more than the posting." "I know." Silas picked up his glass and looked at the amber in it. "The knee I can live with, Merrick. It aches in the rain and I limp to the cellar and back, and that's the whole of it. The twenty-six years of you not walking through that door — that's the part that cost." Merrick's throat worked. He looked at the wall of maps, at countries neither of them would name, and when he spoke again it came out quiet. "I looked for you, after. Then I stopped looking, and stopping was worse." "You were never hard to find either." "No." He almost smiled. "But you were hard to face." Fitch woke, paid, and left without noticing anything, letting in a breath of rain. The door swung shut. The neon hummed. Merrick finished his water. He looked at the untouched slivovice in front of him for a long moment, then stood, and the standing took him two attempts and a grip on the bar's edge that he tried to hide and failed. He put out his hand. It shook. Silas took it in both of his, and his own hands were steady as stone. "Peter." Just the name. Merrick held on a second longer than a handshake needs. "If they give me the summer," he said, "I'll come back." "I'm here. Same sign, same bad knee, same bottle." Merrick retrieved his coat. At the door he paused, and Rory thought he might turn around, but he only spoke with his back to them, to the rain and the green light washing over him. "You were the best of us, Si. That's what I came to say. The rest of it —" "The rest of it stays in Prague," Silas finished. The door closed. The bell got a proper grip on it this time, one clean note, and then there was just the rain and the hum of the sign and the two glasses on the bar, one empty and one full. Rory came down the bar and reached for the untouched one. "Leave it." She drew her hand back. Silas sat with his knee propped and his ring still, and he turned the full glass by its rim, slow, watching the slivovice hold the green light, and he didn't drink it, and he didn't move it, and he didn't look up when the rain eased.
