You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

Rain came off the Camden rooftops in sheets, and the High Street had turned to black glass under the shop lights. Quinn's shoes slapped through it. Forty metres ahead, a figure in a grey hoodie cut between a night bus and a rickshaw, and the rickshaw driver leaned on his horn. She had followed Tomás Herrera from the Raven's Nest for two hours. Two hours of Soho alleys, a Northern line carriage full of drunks, and a kebab shop on Parkway where he had sat with a Coke he never opened. He had clocked her outside Camden Town station. One glance over his shoulder, and he'd bolted. "Herrera! Metropolitan Police! Stop!" He didn't. He vaulted a bike rack outside a shuttered vintage shop and landed badly, one hand slapping the pavement. Then he was up and running again, left hand cradled against his chest. Quinn's lungs burned. Forty-one wasn't old, but it wasn't twenty-three either, and the rain had soaked through her coat to the shirt beneath. She thumbed her radio. "DI Quinn, requesting backup, Camden High Street heading north towards the Lock. Suspect is male, late twenties, grey hoodie, dark jeans." The radio hissed back. "Received, ma'am. Nearest unit is eight minutes out. Kentish Town." "Eight minutes. Brilliant." Herrera swung right, past the bridge over the canal, and ducked beneath a length of construction hoarding plastered with gig posters. Quinn reached the gap a few seconds behind him. The hoarding had been peeled back at one corner, the plywood splintered where someone had levered it with a crowbar and not bothered to hide the evidence. Beyond it lay a stretch of fenced-off wasteland. Weeds, puddles, a skip overflowing with rubble. And at the far end, a squat brick building with tiled arches, oxblood red beneath decades of grime. A disused station entrance. The London Transport lettering above the door had lost half its letters. Herrera was already at the iron gate across the entrance. He hauled it sideways on a rusted track, and it shrieked. "Tomás. Don't." He froze with one hand on the bars. Rainwater streamed off his hood and down his face, and under the orange glare of a distant streetlamp she could see his chest heaving. "You don't want to follow me down here, Detective." "I want to talk to you. That's all." "Then you should have come into the Nest and bought me a drink." He tugged the gate another few inches. "Instead of sitting in a Vauxhall across the road for three nights." "You noticed." "Everyone noticed. Silas made a bet on how long you'd last." She took a step closer. Her boots sank into mud. "Who's Silas betting on? Me or you?" His mouth twisted. Not quite a smile. "Go home, Quinn. Please. I'm not saying this to threaten you." "Three weeks ago a man turned up in the Whittington with sutures in his chest that no surgeon in this city put there. Stitched with silver thread. Silver, Tomás. He told the nurses a Spanish bloke fixed him up in the back of a pub." She held her ground, water dripping from her jaw. "Then he walked out of a locked ward, and nobody's seen him since." Something shifted behind Herrera's eyes. His fingers closed around the medallion at his throat, a small disc of tarnished metal on a chain. "He's alive because of me," he said. "Remember that." He slipped through the gap and disappeared into the dark. Quinn swore and ran. She squeezed through the gate, her coat catching on a jagged bar and tearing at the hem. Inside, the ticket hall stank of damp plaster and something sweeter underneath. Incense, or rot. The old wooden booths were still there, glass panes smashed out, and a staircase led down into blackness. She pulled her torch from her pocket and clicked it on. The beam caught Herrera's back as he rounded the first landing. The stairs went deeper than they should have. She counted landings. Three. Four. The tiles changed as she descended, cream giving way to green, the green giving way to a pattern she didn't recognise, spirals and interlocking crescents painted in some ochre pigment. Her watch ticked against her wrist, a sound she could hear now that the rain had fallen away above her. Then came the noise. Voices. Hundreds of them, a low roar rising from somewhere below, and under it, music. Strings plucked in a scale that made her teeth ache. Quinn rounded the final landing and stopped. The platform below had been transformed. Stalls lined both sides of the tracks and spilled down onto the rails themselves, lit by lanterns that burned with blue and violet flames. Canvas awnings sagged under their own weight. Jars glowed on shelves. Somebody was selling birds in cages, except the birds had too many eyes. A woman in a fur coat haggled over a length of rope that coiled and uncoiled on the counter like a snake deciding whether to strike. Herrera stood at the bottom of the stairs, at a turnstile made of what looked like yellowed bone. A figure blocked the way beside it. Tall, thin, wrapped in a greatcoat, its face hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat. Herrera pressed something small and pale into its gloved palm. The figure tilted its head, and the turnstile clicked round. Herrera went through. He didn't look back. Quinn descended the last dozen steps. Her torch felt ridiculous now, a child's toy against the lantern light, and she switched it off. The figure in the greatcoat turned towards her. "Token." The voice sounded like gravel pouring out of a bucket. "I'm with the Metropolitan Police." She lifted her warrant card. "The man who just went through here is wanted for questioning." The figure didn't move. It didn't even look at the card. "Token." "I don't have a token." "Then you do not enter." Beyond the turnstile, Herrera's grey hood bobbed between the stalls, getting smaller. He passed a man selling what looked like human teeth by the pound. He ducked under an awning hung with dried herbs. Quinn's radio crackled against her hip. "Ma'am, unit's arrived at the Lock. What's your location?" She stared at it. Down here, the signal shouldn't have reached her at all. "Ma'am? Please confirm your position." She thought of Morris. Three years ago, a warehouse in Deptford, a door she had told him not to open. He'd laughed at her and opened it anyway, and the thing she'd found afterwards hadn't looked like a body. The coroner had written *undetermined* on the form. Nobody had asked her what she saw. She'd stopped offering. The spirals on the walls. The silver sutures. The man who'd walked out of a locked ward. She'd been circling this for three years without knowing its shape, and now it was here, humming in the lanterns, breathing on the other side of a bone turnstile. "Ma'am?" She pressed the transmit button. "Stand by at the Lock. I'm in a disused station off the construction site north of the bridge. If you don't hear from me in thirty minutes, come in. Bring a lot of people." "Received. Ma'am, is it safe?" She let go of the button without answering. The figure in the greatcoat was watching her. At least, she thought it was. The shadow beneath the hat brim had no features she could find. "What does a token cost?" "More than a badge." "Name it." The figure leaned closer. It smelled of cold earth and old pennies. "A memory. One you would miss." Quinn's hand went to her watch. The leather strap had worn smooth where her thumb always rested. Morris had bought it for her the Christmas before Deptford, a joke present because she was always late, and she hadn't taken it off since. "Not that one," she said. "Then which?" Beyond the turnstile, Herrera's hood vanished around a stall stacked with brass cages. Quinn looked at the place where he had been, then back at the figure, and made herself breathe. "Take my first arrest," she said. "Hackney, 2006. A kid nicking car stereos. I won't miss him." The gloved hand rose and touched her forehead. Cold spread behind her eyes, a brief, clean ache, and then something was gone. She knew it was gone. She couldn't have said what it had been. A small pale disc sat in the figure's palm. It pressed it into hers and stepped aside. Quinn gripped the token until its edges bit into her skin, and pushed through the turnstile.
