You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

Rory had walked Richmond Park a hundred times on delivery runs, but she had never seen the oaks at Isolde's Bend. That was the trouble with the Veil, Nyx had told her — it didn't hide things by making them invisible. It hid them by making you look away. Tonight, she made herself look. The standing stones crouched in the frost like the shoulders of something buried upright. Seven of them, black with centuries of rain, arranged in a loose ring where no ring of oaks had any right to be. Her breath hung in the air in white ribbons. Behind her, London hummed, distant and orange. "You feel it," Nyx said. Their voice arrived the way it always did — a whisper that seemed to have traveled a long way to reach her, though the shadow pooling at her feet had not moved at all. "I feel like an idiot standing in a park at midnight." Rory touched the Heartstone at her throat. The pendant had been warm all week, a faint insistent pulse like a second heartbeat, growing stronger every time she passed the shuttered Chinese grocery in Soho where the air tasted of copper. Now, as she approached the stones, the warmth was fading. Not cooling — settling. Like a compass needle finding north and going still. "It's quiet. The pendant. It's never quiet." "Because there is nothing of Hel here." Nyx rose out of her shadow in increments, a silhouette assembling itself from the dark, violet eyes kindling. In London they kept to the edges of things, thin and stretched. Here, at the boundary, they stood six feet and more, and their edges did not flicker. "This place belongs to the other side of the Veil. The older side." "That's supposed to comfort me?" "Nothing about the Fae is comforting, Aurora Carter. It is merely beautiful. The two are frequently confused." Rory stepped between the two nearest stones. The cold stopped like a held breath. Warmth poured over her — not the flat warmth of a heated room but the green, humid warmth of a greenhouse in June, thick with the smell of honey and crushed mint and something sweeter underneath, like overripe pears. She looked down. Frost still silvered the grass on the London side of the stones. On her side, wildflowers carpeted the ground — violets, poppies, little white bells she had no name for — blooming in defiance of the calendar, in defiance of everything. "Okay," she breathed. "Okay, that's — okay." Behind her, Nyx passed through the gap and shivered. Actually shivered, the whole silhouette rippling like smoke in a draft. "There is so much shadow here," they whispered, and for once their voice carried something that sounded almost like hunger, or fear, or both. "Look at it. Under every leaf. Beneath every stone. Shadows in this place have weight." Rory looked up and forgot how to speak. The sky was wrong. She knew the winter sky over London — Orion, the Plough, the sodium haze drowning most of it. This sky was black as poured ink and crowded with stars, too many stars, arranged in constellations no one had ever bothered to name because no one from her world had seen them. A slow pale moon hung low, and as she watched, a ring of silver light rippled outward from it across the heavens, the way water ripples when a stone is dropped in a pond. "Tell me the moon doesn't do that," she said. "The moon here is not your moon." "Great. Love that. Very normal evening." She drew her phone from her jacket. Dead screen — no, worse. The screen lit, but the clock read 12:00 and the numbers were flickering, running backward, then forward, then simply dissolving into glyphs. She put it away with the careful slowness of someone deciding not to acknowledge a spider on the wall. They walked deeper. The grove was larger than the ring of stones suggested — far larger, folding inward on itself, hollow-bellied like the inside of a wave. Ancient oaks lined the clearing, their bark veined with threads of faint silver that glimmered when she turned her head, and their canopies moved, just slightly, though there was no wind. She could hear wind — it sighed somewhere high above, carrying a sound like distant bells, like laughter pitched too high, like someone saying her name from very far away. But the air against her face was still. The whispers were the worst part. Not words. Almost-words. Her own name kept surfacing in them the way a face surfaces in a crowd, and every time she turned toward the sound, the flowers turned with her. All of them. Every bloom in sight, rotating on their stems like a field of small attentive faces. "Don't listen to them," Nyx said quietly. "The grove is deciding what you are. If you answer before it finishes, it will decide wrong." "How do you know that?" "I was a sorcerer once, before I was this. We were all liars, and we all dealt with the Fae, and we all learned the rules too late." A pause, and the whisper went softer. "Do not eat anything. Do not give thanks. Do not weep here, whatever you see." "Cheerful." At the heart of the clearing, the ground dipped into a shallow bowl where a spring welled up and spread into a pool no wider than a kitchen table. The water was black and perfectly still, and it did not reflect the sky above them. It reflected a different one — amber, endless, burning with a warm ochre light, and across it drifted shapes like floating gardens, like terraces heavy with fruit. Rory's pendant woke against her sternum with a single strong pulse, almost a knock, and then went still again. She crouched at the edge of the pool. The warmth of it came up at her like an open oven door, carrying the smell of baking bread and woodsmoke and wine. "That's not the sky," she said. "That's somewhere else." "That is a door," said a voice behind her, "or it is a mouth. The two are frequently confused." Rory came to her feet so fast she nearly went into the pool. The woman stood among the flowers without having arrived. She was small, five-and-nothing, wrapped in grey samite, with silver hair falling unbound to her waist, and her eyes were the pale lavender of dusk. She had crossed the clearing to reach them — Rory had heard nothing, seen nothing — and where she had walked, the wildflowers stood upright and unbroken, and the soft earth held no footprints at all. It was as though the ground had declined to admit she'd touched it. "You are the courier," the woman said. "You are the shadow that was once a man. You are the stone that beats." She tilted her head. "One of these things is not what it says it is. Can you tell me which?" "You're Isolde," Rory said. "Nyx told me about you." "Nyx tells many things, in the manner of all ex-sorcerers." The Seer drifted — there was no better word for it — closer, and Rory's skin prickled, the fine hairs rising as though she stood near a live wire. "You came through the stones at the turning of the year. The Veil is thin as ice on a puddle, and thinning still. You came because the stone at your throat has been knocking at doors, and you wish to know whose hand wound it." "I want to know who gave it to me. And why." "All in the fullness of the hour." Isolde smiled, and it was a beautiful, unsettling thing, a smile that had practiced itself for three hundred years. "But you will not keep that hour. No one keeps hours here. An hour in the grove may be a minute in your London, or a week, or a winter. Time is a guest in this place, and it does not always leave when it is asked." The moon above them pulsed again — and this time it had moved, a full handspan across the impossible sky, though no more than a breath had passed. Rory's stomach dropped. Beside her, Nyx had gone very still, drawn thin as a smear of ink. "Then I'll ask fast," Rory said. "Someone gave me a pendant from Hel. It's been dragging me toward a portal in Soho. I need to know if I should follow it." Isolde considered her for a long, long moment. The flowers considered her too. The whole grove seemed to lean in, the shadows pooling deeper beneath the oaks, listening. "You will follow it," the Seer said at last, "whether I counsel it or no. The stone was not given to guide you. It was given to find you. There is a difference between a lantern and a lure, and the difference is only ever who is holding the handle." She drew back her sleeve. From the folds of her sleeve she produced a dagger — slender, leaf-shaped, its moonsilver blade faintly luminous, drinking the light of the alien moon. Even at arm's length, Rory could feel the cold of it, a winter held in metal. "So. A gift, freely given, no debt incurred, no name taken. Take it with your left hand. Do not thank me." Rory took it. The cold bit into her palm and climbed her wrist, and where it passed over the small crescent scar from the bike chain accident when she was nine, the scar warmed, briefly, like a greeting between old friends. "It cuts what should not be cut," Isolde said. "Wards.Bindings. The pride of demons. It will not cut the innocent, and it will not cut a promise, and it will not cut you unless you ask it to." Her lavender eyes fixed on Rory's blue ones, and for a moment something moved behind them — a flicker of the amber sky, the burning terraces, a feast with too many empty chairs. "The solstice is coming, courier. The Veil will open like a wound, and everything that has been knocking will be invited in. You will stand in the doorway. That much I have seen, and I do not lie." "You can't lie," Rory said. "I heard." "I cannot lie," Isolde agreed, drifting backward, her silver hair floating as though underwater. "But I can choose which truths to feed you, and in what order. That, little courier, is the oldest magic of all." The moon pulsed. The pool went dark. And when Rory blinked, the Seer was gone — no footprints, no parted flowers, only the whispers where her voice had been, and the dagger cold in Rory's hand like a promise she hadn't made yet.
