You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The first thing Rory noticed was the smell. It hit her before her eyes had finished adjusting, before her boots had properly settled on whatever lay beneath them: burnt sugar and woodsmoke, the dark, sticky sweetness of figs split open in the heat, something roasting slow and fatty somewhere far off. Under all of it ran a sour, living note, like bread dough left to rise too long. Her stomach clenched so hard she nearly doubled over. "Breathe through your mouth," Isolde said. Rory did. It didn't help. The air had weight to it, a warm, damp heaviness that coated her tongue, and now she could *taste* the figs. Behind her the rift was already sealing, a shimmer like heat haze folding in on itself until nothing remained but a faint crease in the air. The solstice had thinned the Veil enough for Nyx to find the seam, but Rory had no illusions that it would be as easy going back. She straightened and looked up. The sky was amber. It was not a sunset and it was not a tint. The whole dome of it glowed evenly, the colour of honey held up to a window, with no sun anywhere she could find. Light came from everywhere at once, soft and golden and faintly syrupy. It made everything look slightly overripe, like a photograph left too long in a shop window. "Well," she said. Her voice came out smaller than she'd meant. "That's new." They stood at the end of a long row of vines. The vines ran away from her in both directions, dead straight and impossibly long, rising and falling over gentle hills until they blurred into the gold. The grapes hung in clusters as big as her head. Each one was the size of a plum, so darkly purple it was nearly black, and so glossy she could see a tiny warped Rory reflected in every skin. When she leaned closer, she caught the faintest sound coming off them, a low, contented hum, like a cat in a warm room. "Don't," Isolde said, before Rory had even decided to reach. "I wasn't going to." "The hand knows its errand before the mind is told." The Seer's pale lavender eyes rested on her, mild and unblinking. "Keep yours in your pockets, and they'll have nothing to confess." Rory shoved her hands into her jacket. Her fingers found the Fae blade in its sheath at her hip, and the cold of it bit through the leather. She held onto that. It was the only thing here that wasn't warm. A faint sound came from her left, and she turned. Nyx was struggling. Rory had seen the Shade slip through keyholes. She had watched them pour themselves down a stairwell like spilled ink. Now they stood at the edge of the row with their outline *fraying*. The edges of their silhouette kept thinning to smoke and snapping back, over and over, the way a candle flame gutters in a draught. Their violet eyes had dimmed to a sullen glow. "Nyx?" "There are no shadows here." Their voice came thinner than usual, a whisper blown across a greater distance. "Look." She looked down. Her boots stood on dark, loamy soil, and there was nothing beneath them. No shadow pooled at her heels. The vines cast none either, and neither did the enormous grapes. The light came from every direction at once and left nothing untouched. "Can you hold together?" "If I stay solid." The fraying slowed. Their form thickened, took on weight, until they stood beside her tall and dense and dark as a hole cut in the day. "It costs. I'll manage." Rory filed it away. No shadows meant no exits for Nyx, and it meant nowhere for anyone to hide. It also meant that if something came for them, they would see it coming from a very long way off. She wasn't sure yet whether that last part was comforting. They walked. The soil gave slightly under her boots, springy and warm, and when she glanced back she saw her footprints filling in behind her. The ground swelled up gently to erase them, like dough recovering from a thumb. Isolde's side of the row showed nothing at all, but Isolde's side never did. Nyx left deep, clean prints that vanished just as quickly. "The ground's alive," Rory said. "Everything here is alive," said Isolde. "The question is only what it's hungry for." "Is that a riddle or a warning?" Isolde smiled faintly and didn't answer, which Rory was learning meant *both*. The vineyard gave way to an orchard. The trees were broad and low, their branches bowed nearly to the ground under fruit that glowed. Some hung like pears but gave off a buttery golden light. Others were round and blush-red and lit from within like paper lanterns. Clusters of small blue things pulsed softly in and out of brightness, and after a moment Rory realised they were keeping time with one another, a slow, shared rhythm like breathing. Bees drifted between the branches, and every one of them was as fat as her thumb. Their drone was so deep she felt it in her back teeth. One of them bumped lazily against a lantern-fruit, and the skin split with a wet sound. Juice ran down the bark, thick and amber. The smell that rolled off it was so good that Rory stopped walking without meaning to. It reminded her of Yu-Fei's kitchen at the end of a Friday service, when the woks were still smoking and the char siu was coming out of the oven glazed and blackened at the edges. It was the smell she carried home in her hair on the nights she forgot to eat, the smell of *being fed*. Her mouth flooded. Her whole body leaned toward that tree like a plant turning to a window. Something cold closed around her wrist, right over the crescent scar. Nyx. Their grip felt like winter water. "Rory." She blinked. She had taken two steps off the path without knowing it. Her hand was halfway out of her pocket. "Right," she said, and her voice shook. "Right. Okay." "It learns you," Isolde said quietly. "It finds the table you miss most and sets it." Rory made herself look away from the tree and fixed her eyes on the ground and on her boots, which cast no shadows. She counted her breaths the way she used to in the lecture halls at Cardiff when the panic came on. *Four in. Hold. Four out.* The hunger didn't leave, but it settled into something she could carry. "Thanks," she muttered. Nyx released her wrist. "You'd do the same." "I'd have tackled you. Less elegant." The faintest ripple of amusement moved across their dark surface. They heard the singing before they saw the man. It came from deeper in the orchard. The voice was cracked and tuneless, a man's, and it kept falling into the same few words, slightly different each time. "*Two parts honey, one of salt, fold it in and never halt—two parts honey, one of salt—*" He knelt at the base of a tree, gathering fallen fruit into a woven basket. He wore a chef's whites, or what had been whites once. They were stained to the elbows in a dozen colours of juice, and the fabric was so thin in places she could see his skin through it. His fingers were dyed purple to the second knuckle. On the back of his neck, just above the collar, a mark had been burned into him. It looked like a sigil, or a signature, the lines raised and shiny with old scar tissue. Rory's heart dropped. *Contract.* She didn't need anyone to tell her. Her father had drafted enough of them for her to recognise the shape of a thing that had been signed. "Hello?" she said. The man looked up. He had a round, ordinary face, a face you'd pass in the Tesco on Queen Street without a second glance, and his eyes were glassy and far away. He looked at the three of them for a long moment. Then his brow creased, as though he were trying to remember a word. "You're early," he said. His accent was pure Yorkshire. "They've not finished the glaze." "Early for what?" "The table." He said it the way you'd say *the weather*, as though it were obvious. "His Highness always sets a place. Always sets a place for the new ones." He looked down at his basket and frowned. "Two parts honey. One of salt." "How long have you been here?" Rory asked gently. He opened his mouth and shut it again. Something moved behind the glass of his eyes, something drowning, and for one awful second he looked at her with complete clarity. "Don't eat," he whispered. "Whatever he serves. Don't let him make you *want* it." Then it was gone. He picked up a lantern-fruit, turned it over in his stained hands, and went back to singing. Rory stood there with her throat tight. Isolde laid a hand on her shoulder, and it was surprisingly light, like a leaf settling. "We can't take him," Rory said. It was not a question, but she wanted someone to argue. "Not today," said Isolde. From her, that was a promise, and it was the only kind she could make: true, and not quite enough. Beyond the orchard the land fell away into a wide golden valley. At the bottom, a great hall rose from among terraced gardens. It was vast and many-tiered, its roofs glazed like pastry and its towers twisted like sugar-work. Long banners of silk hung from its spires, stirring in a wind Rory couldn't feel. Steam rose from a hundred chimneys and gathered overhead in a slow, sweet-smelling cloud. Very faintly she could hear music and laughter, and underneath them a sound she didn't want to put a name to. It was steady and wet, and it sounded like a thousand people chewing. Against her sternum, the Heartstone Pendant woke. It had pulsed near rifts before, a faint warmth, a flutter. This was different. The stone *beat*, strong and steady and hot. It struck in time with her own heart for a moment, then drifted a little ahead of it, as though it were leading. She pulled it out from under her collar. The crimson gem blazed, its inner glow brighter than she had ever seen it, and it seemed to lean on its silver chain toward the hall like a compass needle finding north. "Rory," Nyx said softly. "It's from here." "I know." She closed her fist around it. It was warm as a living thing. "I think I always sort of knew." Isolde gazed down at the great hall. Her silver hair stirred in the wind that wasn't there. "Someone gave you a key," she said, "and a door was always going to follow." Down in the valley, one of the hall's great doors swung open. A figure stepped out onto the terrace. It was too far away to make out a face, but it raised one arm, unhurried and gracious, and beckoned. Rory's hand went to the Fae blade. Its cold was clean and certain against her palm. "Well," she said. "It'd be rude not to."
