**SCENE: "THE FOG SHOT" — The Apple Blossom Diner, Alborn, MN. Mid-morning.** *(Selvi sits alone in a corner booth, hunched over her camera, scrolling through the preview screen. Detective Hunter crosses the diner, drops a printed photo on the table, and sits across from her without asking.)* **Hunter:** "Ma'am. Selvi, right? Detective Hunter, Alborn PD. Don't mind me sitting — I've got questions for everybody this week. Somebody reported a woman with a camera out past Miller's orchard yesterday, right around six a.m. That sound like you?" **Selvi:** *(going pale, gripping the camera)* "मैं... हाँ, मैं वहीं थी। लेकिन मैंने कोई बुरा काम नहीं किया। मैं तो बस कोहरे की तस्वीरें ले रही थी, वादा करती हूँ। मुझे बताइए, मैंने क्या ग़लती कर दी?" [I... yes, I was there. But I didn't do anything bad. I was only taking pictures of the fog, I promise. Tell me, what mistake did I make?] **Hunter:** "Whoa, easy. Nobody's accusing you of anything. Yet." *(frowning at her words)* "...I don't understand a word of that. Look, one question at a time." *(taps the printed photo)* "This girl. Emma Larsen. Twenty-two. Went for a run on that same road yesterday morning. Nobody's seen her since. Fog's thick, but that's a truck, all right. Can't make out the plate — mud, maybe. When I pressed the shutter, a man stared at me from the window. It was so cold, but sweat broke out on my palms. I ran from there.] **Hunter:** "You're shaking." *(leaning forward, slower now)* "Hey. Look at me. You did the right thing, keeping this. Whatever you're telling me right now... I'm guessing it isn't good." **Selvi:** *(voice rising)* "मैं कह रही हूँ, वो आदमी मुझे देख चुका है! अगर उस लड़की को कुछ हुआ है, तो अब वो मुझे भी... सुनिए, मेरा हॉस्टल शहर से बाहर है, और वहाँ जाने के लिए सिर्फ़ यही एक सड़क है। मुझे अकेला मत छोड़िए।" [I'm telling you, that man has already seen me! If something happened to that girl, then now he'll come for me too— listen, my hostel is outside town, and there's only that one road to get there. Don't leave me alone.] *(Hunter's phone buzzes. He answers, still holding the camera.)* **Hunter:** "Hunter. ...Where? ...The quarry road? It's still running?" *(a beat)* "Nobody touches that truck until I get there. Nobody. Five minutes." *(hangs up, exhales)* "That'd be the truck. Found it. Empty." *(stands, tucks the camera gently back into her hands)* "Listen, I don't know how to say this in your language, so I'm going to say it slow in mine: Don't. Delete. Anything. Stay in town, stay where people can see you, and keep that camera on you at all times. I'll be back before the lunch rush. Nod if you understand." **Selvi:** *(nodding, then grabbing his sleeve as he turns)* "ठहरिए — रुकिए! आप तो जा ही रहे हैं... सुनिए, मैंने आपको वो दूसरी तस्वीर दिखाई ही नहीं। उसमें... उसमें ट्रक के पहियों में कुछ चमक रहा था—" [Wait — stop! You're just leaving... listen, I haven't even shown you the other photo yet. In it... in it something was glinting in the truck's wheel—] **Hunter:** *(already halfway to the door, tipping an imaginary hat)* "Back in an hour. Order yourself a slice of the apple pie.
