You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The frost had taken Richmond Park overnight, and Isolde left no footprints in it. Rory noticed within the first hundred yards and spent the next four hundred trying not to stare. The seer walked ahead through the whitened grass, silver hair swinging at her waist, and where she stepped the frost lay unbroken — a trail of untouched rime curving behind nothing. Rory's own boots crushed the grass with every stride, loud as breaking glass in the still air. Nyx made no sound at all, but that was Nyx. Shadows didn't need to disturb the world to move through it. "You're doing it on purpose," Rory said. "The footprint thing." Isolde glanced back, lavender eyes pale in the December dusk. "The ground does as it pleases. I merely decline to argue with it." "Wonderful. My landlord argues with gravity." "Your landlord," Nyx murmured, from somewhere just behind her left shoulder, "is not three hundred years old." Their voice always arrived like a whisper carried on wind that wasn't blowing — she felt it at the back of her neck more than in her ears. The trees thinned. Ahead, in the last grey light, stood a ring of oaks — except they weren't oaks anymore, not quite. They were the colour and weight of stone, bark frozen into ridges hard as flint, branches bare and knuckled against the sky. Rory put her palm against the nearest one. Cold, yes, but a deep cold, like touching something that had been cold since before the idea of warmth. Grain ran through it in spirals. Fossil wood. Wood that had decided, at some point in its long life, to stop being wood. "The stones remember being trees," Nyx said. They drifted past her — six feet of living darkness with two faint violet embers for eyes — and slid a hand into the trunk. Not through a hollow. Through it. Their arm vanished to the elbow in solid stone, and when they drew it back, frost curled off their fingers like smoke. "Winter thins the weave," Isolde said. She stood at the gap between two of the stone oaks, and the light behind her had gone strange — a shimmer, like heat-haze rising off summer tarmac, except the air was cold enough to bite. Rory squinted. The distortion hung in the gap, faint, trembling, visible only when she didn't look directly at it. "Even mortal eyes may catch the thread, on the longest nights. You brought good timing, little lawyer." "Dropout," Rory said automatically. Her heart was going harder than she liked. On her left wrist, under her glove, the old crescent scar had started to itch. She stepped through. It was like walking through the surface of deep water — a pressure against her whole body, ears popping, the park's distant traffic noise cut off as cleanly as a door closing. Then warmth. Not heating-warmth. Growing-warmth, green and humid, the air of a June greenhouse, and it closed over her like a held breath. She stopped. Blinked. The grove had no right to exist. Light came from everywhere and nowhere — a low gold suffusion, as if the world after sunset had been steeped in honey. There was no sun. She looked up and found a canopy of living oaks, vast and silver-barked, and between their branches a sky the colour of late afternoon that stayed late afternoon no matter how long she looked. Wildflowers ran to the treeline in every direction — she recognised some, bluebells and cowslips, and didn't recognise others at all, blooms like glass bells, like paper lanterns, like small open mouths. Frost should have killed every one of them a month ago. They nodded in a breeze she couldn't feel on her own skin. Her breath didn't fog here. Somewhere ahead, water moved. It didn't sound like water, exactly. It sounded like water trying to hum a tune it had overheard. "Don't drink it," Isolde said, without turning. "I wasn't going to." "You were thinking about it." Rory filed that away under things to worry about later and followed the seer down a path that hadn't been visible until Isolde's unfootprinted feet touched it. Nyx kept pace beside her, and she noticed they'd gone quiet in a way that wasn't their usual quiet. The violet eyes swept the treeline, the canopy, the flowers, and the longer Nyx looked, the slower they moved. "Nyx?" "I have walked between realms for three hundred years," they said softly. "I have stood in the spaces where the world forgets to end. And I have never seen a boundary worn this thin from the wrong side." A pause. The whisper frayed at the edges. "Something has been leaning against this place for a very long time." The path climbed a gentle rise and opened onto the heart of the grove: a single oak older and vaster than all the others, its roots arched like the ribs of a ship, and beneath those roots a pool of black, still water. The golden light pooled on its surface and did not reflect — or rather, it reflected imperfectly, the way a dream reflects a room. Rory's pendant reacted before she understood why. The Heartstone hung on its silver chain beneath her coat, and it had gone warm against her sternum. Not body-warm. Coal-warm. She pulled it out into the light — the deep crimson gem glowing with its faint inner pulse, faster now, brighter, beating like a small trapped heart. "It only does that near Hel," she said. Her voice came out flat. She'd meant it as a question. Isolde stood at the pool's edge, and for once she answered plainly — which frightened Rory more than any riddle. "Every garden borders someone else's wall," the seer said. "On the longest night, the walls listen." Rory crouched at the water. Far down beneath the reflected boughs — deeper than the pool had any right to be — an amber glow seeped up through the dark, like sunset trapped under glass. Warm light. Hungry light. The pendant hammered against her collarbone, and for a moment she thought she heard, beneath the humming water, something vast and distant and cheerful, the way a feast sounds through a closed door. She leaned back sharply. Her reflection leaned with her — a half-second late. "Right," she said. "That's enough of that." Isolde turned from the pool and held something out across both palms. A dagger, slender and leaf-shaped, its metal the colour of moonlight on snow. Rory took it and drew breath through her teeth: the blade was freezing, bitterly, impossibly cold, in air warm enough for orchids. When she turned it, the light slid along the moonsilver and the blade answered with a luminescence of its own, faint and patient, as if it were remembering a moon that wasn't present. "The Courts rarely give away their teeth," Isolde said. "Winter makes beggars of boundaries, and I find I would rather you were armed when the walls start talking. It cuts what is woven. Remember that. Wards, veils, promises." "Promises," Rory repeated. Isolde's lavender eyes didn't blink. "Some doors are only words held very still." Nyx drifted to the great oak and laid a shadow hand against its trunk. Where they touched, carvings surfaced in the stone-grey bark — spirals, and beneath them a motif repeated around the whole ring of the grove: a tree whose roots became doors, and beyond the doors, small carved figures walking out in single file. Some of the figures had been defaced. Deliberately, long ago. "Time," Isolde said, and now the riddles came back, and Rory understood the riddles were a kindness, a way of saying a hard thing softly. "An hour here is a courtesy, not a rule. Out there it may buy you a minute, or a month. Grieve nothing, take nothing offered, and mind the door behind you. It keeps its own hours." They walked back the way they'd come, the glass-bell flowers chiming faintly at their passing, and the pressure met Rory again at the gap in the stone oaks — like surfacing. Cold hit her lungs. Richmond Park stood grey and frost-bound around her, dusk exactly as they'd left it, and her breath fogged in the air, and everything was ordinary, and everything was wrong, because the boot prints she'd left on the way in were gone. Not melted. Gone, as if the ground had reconsidered them. "We were gone longer than the world was watching," Nyx said. Rory looked back at the stone oaks. Just dead trees now, fossil and frost, the shimmer invisible in the ordinary dark. But against her ribs, inside her coat, the moonsilver blade lay cold as a piece of winter that would never melt — and the Heartstone, quiet again, still pulsed once, softly, like something on the far side of a wall, knocking.
