You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

Rain hammered Soho into a smear of neon and oil. Under the green buzz of the Raven's Nest sign, the door swung open at 11:43 and a man stepped out, collar up, a paper-wrapped bundle tucked against his ribs like a football. Quinn pushed off the shutter of the closed kebab shop across the street. Three hours of cold coffee and dead legs, and there he was. Marcus Webb. The warrant sat folded in her inside pocket, signed that morning, warm from her body heat. She crossed the road through two lanes of standing water. "Webb. Metropolitan Police. I want a word about the Nest." He looked at her once, the way a man looks at a bus he's decided not to catch, and ran. Left onto Old Compton, right up Dean Street, his heels throwing fan-shaped sprays behind him. She kept her shoulders low and her eyes on the coat. Younger legs, sure. She'd run down faster men. He vaulted a skip behind the hoardings and she took the gap he'd aimed for, palms slapping wet plywood, boots skidding on brick dust turned to paste. "Control, this is Quinn. Pursuing a suspect on foot, male, grey overcoat, heading north from Dean Street—" He cut through a gap between two buildings so narrow she scraped both elbows getting through. By the time she was back on pavement, any unit Control scrambled would be twelve minutes behind a man who was already thirty seconds gone. She clipped the radio to her belt and ran. He crossed the Euston Road against a wall of taxis, horns chasing him across four lanes. She went through them like a forward on a break, one hand flat on a bonnet, and kept him in sight up Camden High Street, past the shuttered stalls of Inverness Street, a fox breaking left with something dead in its mouth. He didn't check over his shoulder anymore. He didn't need to. He knew exactly where he was going, and that bothered her more than the running did. Behind a plywood hoarding off a side street, past a skip full of soaked plasterboard, the ground opened. Station stairs. Tiled walls furred with black damp, the ghost of a roundel flaking off the porcelain, a station name eaten down to three letters. A rusted gate hung open on a freshly cut chain. The cuts still shone. Webb was halfway down, and he was fumbling. At the bottom, a brass turnstile stood across the passage, polished bright by hands where the rest of the world had rusted. He pressed a white chip to a slot in the housing. Something small rang off the tiles — keys, she assumed, or loose change — and then the turnstile clunked and he was through. He looked back up the stairs at her. Rain ran off his chin. "Come on, then, Detective. Bring your warrant. See what it buys down here." The light swallowed him. Not torchlight — lamplight, dozens of flames, and under them a murmur. A crowd. Down here, forty feet under a street with no stations on it, a crowd. Quinn took the stairs with her hand on the rail. The air changed on the way down. Wet stone and tallow first, then copper, then something sweet and rotten underneath it all, like fruit left in a drawer. Her torch beam found the turnstile, shut again, its slot dark. Beyond it, the passage opened into a vaulted hall where canvas stalls crowded the old platform edges and lantern light moved over faces that didn't all look like they'd come from the same city, or the same century. A man stood off to the left of the turnstile with a hurricane lantern and a face like a dried riverbed. "Token or turn back." Quinn held her warrant card up to the light. "Detective Sergeant Harlow Quinn. I'm in pursuit of a suspect. He went through thirty seconds ago." "That's paper." The lantern didn't waver. "This is bone." She ran her pockets. Warrant card, notebook, torch, keys. Nothing white, nothing carved. Then she thought of the small bright sound on the steps, the thing she'd filed as keys, and turned. Six steps up, on the wet tile where Webb had jostled the chip from his pocket while he fumbled the slot, something lay glinting in her torch beam. She climbed back up and picked it out of a puddle. Two inches of carved bone, white as a tooth, threaded with a hole for a cord. It was warm. Warm in her palm, warm as skin, while the whole world around it ran with rain. "You found his spare," the gatekeeper called up. "Lucky man. Unlucky you." She came back down and stood at the turnstile without feeding it yet. Her phone showed one bar, then none, then the screen dimming itself to save its own life. The radio gave her static and syllables, units checking in from a city that had no idea this hole existed. Three years ago there'd been a door in the back of a warehouse that wasn't on any plan Morris had shown her, and Morris had grinned and said, five minutes, Harlow, in and out, and she'd waited by the car like a good partner, like a sensible partner. They'd carried what was left of him out at dawn, and the file on it had gone nowhere for three years, and every dead end in that file had the same smell as the air coming up these stairs. The calendar on her desk at the station had tonight circled in red ink, her own handwriting, her own note: market moves. Full moon. The moon sat somewhere above the rain and the hoardings, and by morning there would be no station here, no turnstile, no Webb, no bundle under his coat, and she'd be back to a file with Morris's face on the cover and nothing under it. "What's down there?" she asked. "Everything you can't arrest." The gatekeeper lifted the lantern an inch. "Full moon waits for nobody, love. Token or turn back." The rain came down the stairs behind her in a thin sheeting draft, and the lamplight came up from below in a warm push, and between the two of them the turnstile waited, brass and patient. Quinn pressed the bone chip to the slot. The barrier clunked open. Warm air rolled over her, thick with tallow smoke and voices and the ring of a bell somewhere deep in the hall, and thirty yards in, a grey overcoat slipped between two stalls and was gone. Quinn stepped through.
