You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective arrives at a crime scene in an unusual location. Something is wrong — the evidence doesn't add up. A colleague is present, offering a different interpretation. Through careful observation and deduction, the detective begins to see what others have missed. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The smell reached Harlow Quinn before the light did — old rain, candle fat, and something underneath both, like copper left too long in water. She ducked under the police tape strung across the disused entrance on Camden Road and started down the dead escalator, her torch cutting a cone through air that felt colder than it had any right to be in late June. Eighteen years on the job had taught her that crime scenes came in two flavors: the messy ones, where everything told you too much, and the quiet ones, where everything told you just enough to lie. This one was trying very hard to be quiet. "Detective Inspector." A young constable at the bottom of the escalator directed her along the platform with his chin. "DS Okafor's coordinating. Body's by the north tunnel mouth." The abandoned station had been sealed since before Quinn came to London — some reshuffle in the sixties, closed and forgotten, the sort of place that existed only on archival maps and in the imaginations of urban explorers. Now it was lit by half a dozen portable floods, and the light did strange things down here. It pooled. It refused to reach the tunnel mouths. The body lay on its back near the north tunnel, a man in his fifties, grey overcoat buttoned to the throat, one shoe missing. Dr. Osei crouched beside it, making notes. "Quinn." DS Amara Okafor rose from a haunch and came over, gloved hands raised away from her coat like a surgeon. She was good — three years in, sharp-eyed, honest to a fault. That was the problem. Honest people saw what was in front of them. "Cause of death looks like a single stab wound, left subclavian. Deep, angled down. We've got no weapon, no ID on the body yet, wallet's gone. Best guess, homeless fella killed in a dispute over territory or a deal gone wrong. Squatters use these old stations. It happens." "Does it," Quinn said, and walked past her. She circled the body once, slowly, the way she'd been taught by a man whose funeral she'd attended three years ago. The floor of the platform was furred with decades of dust — thick, grey, undisturbed except for the trampling the first responders had given it. The photographs Okafor's team had taken before anyone walked in showed the original state, and Quinn made Okafor pull them up on the camera's screen and angle it toward her. There. In the dust, before the boots had chewed it up: paths. Cleared aisles, swept in places, running in parallel lines down the length of the platform. Rectangular patches where the dust lay thinner, as though heavy things had stood there a long time and been carried away. Along the far wall, a row of dark crescents — wax, dripped and pooled, dozens of them, old and layered. "Your squatter," Quinn said, "held a market." Okafor frowned. "It's possible people—" "Look at the wax. That's candle-stall wax, vendor wax, dripped over months. Years, maybe. And these aisles aren't footpaths, they're laid out. Somebody maintained this floor." She crouched by the body, keeping her hands to herself, and studied the dead man's shoes. The surviving one was cracked leather, sole worn smooth — a walker's shoe. But the sole was clean. Not a grain of dust on it, not a scuff of the grey film that coated everything else down here, including, she noted, the dead man's coat shoulders and the back of his own hands. "A man walks into a dusty station and his shoes come up spotless," she said. "Either he was carried — and there's no drag mark, no lividity on his back consistent with post-mortem transport, he died flat on his back and stayed there — or the floor wasn't dusty where he was walking." Okafor crouched beside her. "Or someone cleaned around the body after." "After a murder, in the dark, in an abandoned station, someone swept a four-foot radius and then left the rest of the station filthy." Quinn shook her head. "People don't tidy up toward the evidence, Amara. They run from it." Osei, the pathologist, looked up from his notes. "There's something else, Detective. Body temp puts death at roughly eleven hours ago. But his watch—" He nodded at the dead man's left wrist, a cheap steel thing on a stretched bracelet, its face fogged. "Stopped at 3:17. Impact damage to the crystal, consistent with a fall or a blow. If the watch stopped when he went down, he died at 3:17 this morning. That's fourteen hours ago. Three hours don't match." Quinn's stomach turned over, quietly, the way it did. Three years ago, DS Morris had been pulled from the Regent's Canal with his own watch stopped at 3:17, and no one had ever explained it, and the case had died of natural causes, which was to say nobody had the stomach for it. She wore his spare watch now — worn leather strap, left wrist — because she'd never found a reason to stop, and the dead man's fogged steel face was looking up at her like a question she'd already failed to answer once. "Bag the watch," she said, and her voice came out level. "Seperately. Chain of custody like it's the crown jewels." She stood and swept her torch across the platform again, and this time she saw the small things. A brass button, military pattern, too far from any coat. A scorched circle on the concrete, recent, the char still black. And near the north tunnel mouth, half under the dead man's trailing coat hem, a gleam of pale ivory. She gloved up and retrieved it with a evidence bag. A token, the size of an old thrupenny bit, carved from bone — some animal's knuckle, polished smooth, a hole drilled through the center. It was warm. She told herself that was her own hand's heat transferring, and did not quite believe it. "Oi." Okafor's voice came from the platform's far end, careful. "Guv. There's a witness. She was down here when the first unit arrived. Says she's a researcher. She's giving Constable Ellis the runaround." The witness sat on the lip of an old bench, and Quinn knew at a glance she was no vagrant. Small woman, mid-twenties, red curls crushed under a wool hat, round glasses fogging in the station's damp. Freckles. A worn leather satchel at her feet, so stuffed with books it wouldn't close, one spine labeled in a hand too neat to be her own. She was tucking her hair behind her left ear — Quinn watched her do it twice in ten seconds, the same ear, the same gesture, a tell worn smooth by repetition. "Name?" Quinn asked. "Eva Kowalski." Green eyes came up, and Quinn read fear in them, but a particular kind — not the fear of someone near a murder. The fear of someone who understood what they were looking at and knew nobody would believe them. "I'm a research assistant. British Museum. I was — the closed stations have archival interest. Structural. I wasn't here for anything—" "You came down a sealed entrance with a torch and a satchel of books at four in the morning." "I come at night." Kowalski's chin lifted a fraction. "It's quieter. I didn't see anything. I heard something — a sound, like a door. And then he was just... there." She looked at the body and away. "He wasn't there before. I'd swear it." "People don't appear, Ms. Kowalski." "No," Kowalski said softly. "They generally don't." Quinn turned back to the scene and saw the last piece lying in the dust two meters from the body, as though dropped or thrown: a small brass compass, its case green with verdigris, sigils etched around the face in a script she didn't recognize. She lifted it into an evidence bag and the strangest thing happened — through the plastic, through her glove, she felt it shift, the needle swinging, ignoring north entirely, fixing on the blank stretch of wall between the two tunnel mouths and holding there, trembling, like a dog straining at a leash. She walked toward the wall. The needle strained harder. Up close, the mortar between two courses of brick was newer than the rest — newer, and around it, faint scorch marks in a rough oval, man-high. "Okafor." Quinn kept her voice flat. "When was the last full moon?" Okafor blinked. "Er — nine days ago. Why?" "Because a market was held down here, and a man was killed here, and there's no weapon, no blood trail leaving, no footprints approaching, and his shoes are clean." Quinn held up the evidence bag. The needle inside was pressed against the glass, pointing at the wall like a finger. "And this is pointing at a door that isn't there anymore." Behind her, she heard Eva Kowalski's breath catch — and heard the woman tuck her hair behind her left ear, one more time, for luck. "Ms. Kowalski," Quinn said, turning. "Start from the beginning. And this time, don't tell me what sounds sane."
