<nc-section data-title="Version 1: A Gruff Welcome" data-color="red"> I reined Thunder in beside the stables, my heart hammering harder than his hooves. The smell of hay and horse sweat hung thick in the dusk. Before I could dismount, a shadow fell across me. "You're late, boy." Sir Roland stood with his arms crossed, broad as a cellar door, his gray beard braided and streaked with old battle-dust. A scar ran from his left brow to his jaw, pale against his weathered skin. He looked me over the way a butcher appraises a calf. "The roads were longer than I was told, Sir," I said, sliding from the saddle. My legs wobbled beneath me. "The roads are always longer than we're told." He seized Thunder's bridle and ran a hand down the stallion's neck. Something in his stern face softened. "Good animal. Better than you deserve, I'd wager. Stable him, rub him down, and be at the training yard before dawn. If you're a moment late again, you'll muck stalls until winter." "Yes, Sir Roland." As he strode off, I thought I heard him mutter, "Well ridden, at least." I decided to pretend I hadn't heard, and to treasure it all the same. </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 2: The Knight of Many Stories" data-color="green"> The stables were warm and golden in the last light, and a broad-shouldered man was leaning against the doorframe, whittling a small wooden horse with a pocketknife. He looked up as I approached and grinned as though he'd been expecting me all day. "You must be young Frederick!" he called, sheathing the knife and tucking the little horse into his belt. "Sir Roland of Harrowmere, at your service. Though I suspect that before long you'll be at mine, fetching my boots and cursing my name." I laughed despite my nerves. "I hope not to curse it, Sir." "Oh, you will. Everyone does. I cursed my own master's name for three years, and now I'd give my sword arm to hear him scold me once more." He stepped forward and clasped my forearm in a grip like iron. "Come. Thunder, is it? Fine name. We'll get him fed, and then you'll tell me how a boy from the marshlands came to ride a warhorse's cousin." I hadn't mentioned the marshlands, or that Thunder was anything but an ordinary horse. When I stared at him, Sir Roland only winked. "A knight notices things, lad. That's lesson one, and it's free." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 3: A Warning at Dusk" data-color="blue"> The stable yard was quiet when I arrived, the stable hands already gone to their suppers. I had just loosened Thunder's girth when a low voice spoke from the shadows. "Keep your voice down, and your eyes open." A figure in a dark traveling cloak stepped into the lantern light. It was a knight, tall and lean, with silver at his temples and a sword whose hilt was wrapped in worn blue leather. The crest on his tabard, a serpent coiled around a broken spear, was one I did not know. "Sir Roland," he said, by way of introduction. "I was told a squire would arrive today. I was not told he would arrive alone, on that horse." "Is something wrong with Thunder?" I asked. "Not with the horse." His gaze flicked toward the castle walls and the darkening hills beyond them. "There are those in this keep who will wonder why you were sent here, boy. Some will be kind about it. Most will not. Trust your training and be careful whom you trust." He pressed a small iron key into my palm and closed my fingers around it. "Tell no one I gave you that. Now, let's see to your horse." </nc-section>
