You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The oaks stood in a ring at the bottom of the hollow, seven of them, each wider than a delivery van and black with age. Frost furred the bracken around them. Rory's breath smoked. Her boots punched through the crust with every step, and beside her the frost stayed smooth where Isolde walked. "You're wearing a coat made of moths," Rory said. "Shouldn't you leave *something* behind? A bootprint? A smell of patchouli?" "I leave what I mean to leave." Isolde's silver hair swung against the back of her knees as she reached the nearest trunk. "Everything else stays where it belongs." "That's not an answer." "It is the only kind I keep." Nyx drifted up on Rory's left. In the dusk they were hard to tell from the tree shadows, save for the two violet points of their eyes, and those had narrowed to slits. "Those are not trees," they whispered. The words came out thin as wind through a keyhole. "I have stood beside the Thames when it froze and watched a king lose his head. I know what oak feels like. This is older than the wood it wears." "Then you'll fit right in." Isolde laid her palm flat on the bark between two of the trunks. The gap between them rippled like a dropped stone in a pond. "Walk through together. Do not let go of what you carry." Rory's fingers closed around the hilt at her hip. The Fae blade sat in its sheath like a block of ice against her thigh. She stepped between the oaks. The cold vanished. Warmth wrapped her, damp and green, and it carried the scent of crushed clover and rain on hot stone. Her ears popped. She swallowed, and the pressure eased, and when she opened her eyes the December dusk had gone. Wildflowers ran to the horizon. Foxgloves, cornflowers, poppies the red of a fresh wound, and blooms she had no name for, blue-black cups that turned to follow her as she passed. A path wound through them, pale and narrow, and above it the sky hung the colour of a bruise healing, plum bleeding into gold with no sun to explain either. "Bloody hell." Rory turned in a slow circle. The oaks stood behind her, but they looked different from this side. Each trunk held a doorway of its own, and through each doorway she saw a different sky. "Richmond Park has a *horizon*. That's new." "The Park has an edge," Isolde said. "The Grove does not." Nyx stepped through last. Their outline wavered, thinned, then firmed until the shape of a tall figure stood in the flowers, a man-shaped hole cut from the evening. They flexed long fingers and stared at them. "I am solid." The whisper cracked. "I did not choose it. I did not ask the ground to hold me." "The ground here is generous." Isolde started up the path. "It holds everyone who arrives with an honest fear." "I have no fear." "Then it holds you out of manners." Rory bit back a laugh and followed. The flowers brushed her knees. Each stem left a pollen smear on her jeans, gold and faintly warm, as if the plants had been sitting in sunlight all day. Something chimed off to her right, soft and glassy. She stopped. A stream cut through the meadow there, no wider than her forearm, and the water ran uphill. It climbed a slope of white pebbles and vanished over the crest in a silver thread. She crouched. The pendant swung out from her collar on its chain and the crimson stone lay against her sternum, warm as a swallowed coal. She frowned and tucked it back under her jumper. It kept pulsing. "Isolde." She kept her voice level. "Is there a Hel portal in here?" Isolde did not turn. "There is a wound in the world near here. It is old and it has scarred over. Your stone remembers the sting." "Great. Love that. A scar that stings." "You have one yourself." Isolde glanced at Rory's left wrist, at the crescent of pale skin below the cuff of her sleeve. "Does it trouble you every time it rains?" Rory tugged the cuff down. "Point taken." They climbed. The path rose through a stand of trees whose bark shone like wet slate, and the leaves overhead made a low sound, not a rustle but a murmur, a hundred voices in a crowded room speaking too softly to parse. Rory caught a word. Then another. *Late.* *Again.* *Whose.* She stopped listening. Nyx did not. They had halted under the boughs, head tilted, and the shadow at their feet stretched toward the trunk like a dog on a lead. "They are reciting names," they whispered. "Mine is among them. Aldric. Aldric. Aldric." The violet in their eyes flared. "No one has spoken it since sixteen forty-three." "Nyx." Rory reached out and stopped short of touching. Her hand hovered an inch from their sleeve of dark. "Hey. Look at me. What's your name?" A long pause. The leaves murmured. "Nyx." "Right. Good. That's the one I've got in my phone. Come on." The shadow drew back to their heels. They walked on, and Rory kept pace at their elbow. The trees thinned. The path opened onto a shelf of pale rock, and Rory stopped so suddenly that Nyx nearly walked through her. Below the shelf lay a bowl of land, and in the bowl stood a city of glass. Not a city the way London was a city, with its ragged skyline and its cranes. These towers grew. They spiralled from the earth like frozen smoke, thin and translucent, and inside each one lights drifted in slow orbits, amber and green and a shade of blue she felt in her teeth. No roads joined the towers. Bridges of woven vine arched from spire to spire, and figures crossed them, too far away to name, too tall to be anything she wanted to name. "Tell me that's not where we're going." "That is where I was born." Isolde's voice lost its edge. She stood at the rim with her hands folded, and for once the silver hair hung still. "It is where I may not return. We go no closer." "Suits me." Rory's grip tightened on the blade. Its steel had warmed by a single degree, and along the fuller a thin light crawled, though no moon hung anywhere in that plum-and-gold sky. "The knife's lit up." "It knows the Courts." "Does it like them?" Isolde's lavender eyes held the distant glow. "It was made to be feared by whatever they fear. That is not the same as liking." Far below, a bell tolled. The note rolled up the slope, low and slow, and every flower on the meadow behind them turned its face toward the sound. Rory felt it in her ribs, a pressure like a hand laid on her chest. Then the pendant flared against her skin, hot enough to make her hiss, and the hum in the air shifted pitch, and the murmuring leaves went silent all at once.
