You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective is pursuing a suspect through rain-soaked city streets at night. The chase takes them from the street level down into an underground market. The detective must decide whether to follow the suspect into unfamiliar and potentially dangerous territory. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The rain had turned Camden into a smear of red taillights and sodium glare, and Quinn had lost the man twice already. She found him again at the corner of Chalk Farm Road, a dark figure in a canvas jacket cutting between a kebab shop and a shuttered vape store. Tomás Herrera. She'd tailed him from the Raven's Nest, watched him slip out through the kitchen door with a black medical bag clutched to his chest, and then followed him onto the Tube and up out of the ground again. He hadn't looked back once until Mornington Crescent. Then he'd looked straight at her, and he'd run. "Police! Herrera, stop!" He didn't. Of course he didn't. Quinn ran. Eighteen years on the job and a decade of it before that in the habit of discipline, and her body still obeyed her the way it had on parade grounds: shoulders down, breath in through the nose, stride measured. Rain sheeted off her cropped hair and into her collar. Her left wrist ached where the old leather watch strap had soaked through. She ignored it. Ahead, Herrera bounced off a bin, caught himself, and kept going. He was younger by twelve years and a good deal more frightened than she was, which made him quick. He took the next left, into a service lane behind the market stalls, and she followed, boots slapping through oily puddles. The lane narrowed. Fire escapes leaned overhead like tired drunks. Somewhere a gutter was overflowing, and the water crashed onto a metal lid with a sound like applause. "You're not in trouble," she shouted, which was a lie. "I only want to talk about the Nest." He glanced back. Even at forty feet she saw the white of his eyes, the wet curls plastered to his forehead, the glint of a small medallion swinging loose from his collar. Saint Christopher, patron of travelers. She'd read it in his file and thought it quaint. Now it flashed in the lamplight like a warning. Herrera vaulted a low wall. His sleeve rode up as he landed and she caught the pale seam of the scar along his forearm, the knife wound from his file, before he ducked out of sight. She hit the wall with one hand and swung over it, and the world opened into a courtyard she didn't recognize. Loading docks. Chain-link. A rusted door set into the brick beneath a railway arch, propped open by a milk crate. Beyond it, stairs descended into a yellow, flickering dark. Herrera was already at the door. A figure stood there, broad as a wardrobe and wrapped in an oilskin coat, one hand held out palm up. Herrera reached into his jacket, fumbled, swore in Spanish, and produced something small and pale. He pressed it into the man's palm. The big man closed his fingers, studied him, and stepped aside. Herrera vanished down the stairs. "Oi!" Quinn slid to a stop ten feet short. "Police. Step away from the door." The doorman turned. He had a face like a fist that had been left out in the weather, and eyes with a wrongness she couldn't put a name to. They caught the light like a cat's. He looked at her warrant card as it came out of her coat, and something like amusement moved across his mouth. "Don't think so, love." "I'm pursuing a suspect." "You're pursuing a bad idea." He tilted his head toward the stairs. "Token or nothing. That's the only law down there." "What token?" He only smiled. Quinn looked past him. The stairwell fell away in damp concrete, lit by bulbs strung along the ceiling in a crooked line. A smell drifted up: cold stone, woodsmoke, something sweet and chemical underneath, like burnt sugar and pennies. Voices, too, a low tide of them. Someone laughed. Something that was not quite a laugh answered it. She knew this place, or knew of it. Three years of not sleeping well had taught her to read the margins of case files, the bits that didn't add up. Rumors on the edge of reports. A word that kept surfacing in the mouths of informants who stopped talking the moment she looked at them properly. *The Market.* Morris had said it once. Just once, in the car, three weeks before the warehouse. *You ever hear of the Veil Market, Harlow?* And she'd laughed and said no, and he hadn't pushed. The doorman was watching her face. "Ah," he said softly. "You've heard of it." She put the warrant card away. Every instinct she had, every hour of training, said the same thing. No backup. No radio signal this far under the arches. No jurisdiction she could put a name to, and a doorman whose eyes weren't right. You didn't go into an unsecured location alone, on foot, chasing a man you had nothing solid on. You called it in. You waited. You built the case. But if she called it in, Herrera would be gone by the time the van arrived, and the Market would fold itself up like a card trick. Whatever he was carrying in that bag, whoever he was carrying it to, she would lose it. And the clique would close ranks around him the way they always did, and she'd be back at her desk under the strip light with another file that didn't add up. Something small clicked against the wet pavement by her boot. She looked down. A disc of pale, polished material, no bigger than a two-pound coin, lay in a puddle. It was carved with a spiral, and it was very clearly bone. Herrera must have had two, and dropped the second when he vaulted the wall. It must have skittered across the courtyard and stopped almost at her feet, as if it had been aimed. The doorman had noticed it too. His smile thinned. Quinn crouched and picked it up. It was warm. Not warm like something held in a pocket, but warm like something alive, with a faint, slow pulse under her thumb that could have been her own heartbeat and wasn't. *Don't,* said a small, sensible voice in her head. It sounded a lot like her own, and a little like Morris. She thought of him in the passenger seat, tie loosened, holding a bag of chips on his knee. She thought of the report that had used the phrase *unexplained circumstances* four times in a single paragraph. She thought of the closed casket, and the way the funeral director had refused to meet her eyes. Three years of standing at the edge of this. Three years of not knowing. She stood. Water ran down her face, and she let it. Then she held the token up between two fingers, where the doorman could see it. "This do?" For a long moment he didn't move. Then he stepped back and swept out an arm, an usher at the world's worst theater. "Mind the fourth step," he said. "It bites." Quinn drew a breath through her nose, squared her shoulders, and unbuttoned her coat so she could reach her sidearm without fumbling. Then she went down into the yellow dark, one hand on the cold wall, the bone token pulsing against her palm like a second heart, and the rain sealing shut behind her.
