You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The standing stones were older than the park, older than London, and they did not care who knew it. Rory stopped a few paces short of them. There were seven, black-brown and furred with lichen, and it took her a moment to understand why they looked wrong. They were oak. Not stone shaped like trees, but whole trunks that had been cut and raised and then never rotted, never split, never surrendered to a single English winter. December wind combed through the bracken around them, but the oak did not so much as creak. "Tell me again this was your idea," she said. "It was the Seer's idea." Nyx's voice came from beside her, or perhaps from the hedge behind her. It always sounded like something carried a long way on the wind and set down softly. "I merely agreed to escort you. There is a difference." "Cowardice, I think, is the difference." "Caution, Aurora. I have had four centuries to refine the distinction." She glanced at them. Nyx stood a head above her, a silhouette cut from the dusk, edges smoking faintly where the last light touched them. Their violet eyes were fixed on the gap between the two tallest oaks, and they had gone very still. "You can see it," Rory said. "I can feel it. Like a hand on the back of my neck." She could see it, too, now that she was looking properly. The Veil was not something she'd ever been able to see until three weeks ago, when a pendant on a silver chain had arrived in her post with no return address and something in her eyes had quietly come unlatched. Now the air between the stones shivered like heat above a road. Beyond the shimmer, the evening looked a shade too gold. She touched the Heartstone through her jacket. It lay cool against her sternum. Not a Hel portal, then. Small mercies. "Right," she said. "Together, on three?" "I do not believe that will help." "It'll make me feel better." "Then by all means." She counted. On three they stepped through, and the world took a breath. The cold went first. It didn't fade so much as get politely removed, like a coat lifted from her shoulders. Then the sound came: a low, layered hum, and beneath it something like distant bells, though when she turned her head to find them, they were everywhere at once and nowhere in particular. "Oh," said Rory, because there was nothing else to say. Flowers. That was the first thing, and for a moment the only thing. Foxglove and bluebells, poppies, something tall and violet she couldn't name, all blooming in a December that had been left outside the stones. They rose to her knees and flowed away in every direction, and the light that lay over them had no source. It simply was, soft and lateral, as if the whole clearing had been dipped in late afternoon and kept there. She crouched and touched a poppy. The petals were warm, faintly, like skin. "Don't pick anything," Nyx breathed. "I wasn't going to." "You were considering it." "I was considering considering it." She stood, and found that the flowers nearest her boots had turned. Not dramatically, not the way a film would do it. But every bloom in a wide circle now faced her, patient and attentive, like a crowd that has gone quiet when someone stood up to speak. "That's not creepy at all," she muttered. They followed a path that wasn't quite a path, a thinner place in the blossoms, pale earth showing between the stems. Rory's boots left clean prints in it. She looked back after a dozen steps and watched them fill, the soil rising softly to erase her, as if the ground was tidying up after a guest. "Nyx. Look at the path." Nyx looked. Their head tilted. "There are no other tracks." "None at all. And someone walks this every day." She'd been told as much: silver hair to the waist, a woman who lived here. "Either she's very light, or..." "Or the grove does not permit her to be followed." A pause. "I find I understand the sentiment." The ground began to slope, and the trees began. Not oaks now, but older, stranger things: pale birches with bark that peeled in long curls like parchment, and something twisted and black with leaves the color of new pennies. Light filtered down through them in slow-moving coins. Rory realized she was walking with her hand tucked over the crescent scar on her left wrist, a habit from childhood whenever a room felt too large. She made herself let go. She checked her phone. The screen showed 4:52. She'd checked it at the stones and it had said 4:52 then, too. She watched the colon. It didn't blink. "Time's doing something," she said. "Time is doing many things. Some of them backward." Nyx had drifted closer, half their outline dissolving and re-forming with each step, a nervous shimmer. "In my day, we spoke of places like this in whispers. A man might step into a fairy ring for an evening and step out to find his children grey." "Cheerful." "It was a cheerful age. Very little else to be." Nyx's violet gaze slid to the ground. "There are no shadows here, Aurora." She looked. She had one herself, a faint blur beneath her boots, but it was strange and shapeless, pooling in no particular direction. The trees cast none at all. And Nyx, who lived in shadow the way fish lived in water, was walking through a world with nowhere to hide. "Does it hurt?" "No. It is like being in a house where every door has been taken off." They flexed long fingers, and for a moment the fingers went to smoke and back again with visible effort. "I am solid because I must be. There is nothing here to let me be otherwise." "Then stay close." "I had intended to." The bells grew louder. The path bent around a huge fallen trunk, and Rory climbed onto it to see over, and stopped. Below them the grove opened into a bowl, wide and green, and at its center stood a pool as still as poured glass. Around it, a ring of pale stones held small lights suspended in the air like held breaths. Not fireflies. When she squinted, they seemed to be tiny shapes, wings and limbs, gone before she could name them. The bells were coming from the water. Each time a light drifted low over the surface, a single clear note rang out, and the pool rippled without a breeze. "Beautiful," she whispered, and then, because she was Rory, and cool-headed, and had learned from an ex named Evan exactly what beautiful things cost: "Too beautiful." "Yes." "Everything here wants us to stay." "Yes." Nyx's voice had dropped to almost nothing. "I have been fighting the wish since the stones." She looked down at the pendant. She had pulled it out without noticing. The crimson stone glowed a little, but only its usual inward gleam, steady and calm. Then, as she watched, the light quickened. Once. Twice. A slow pulse of warmth against her palm, like a heartbeat heard through a wall. Rory went cold from the neck down. "That's not supposed to happen here," she said. "What is it doing?" "It's reacting to a portal." She lifted her eyes and swept the bowl, the pool, the ring of stones. Nothing but green quiet. "Somewhere close. Hel's close." "Ah." Nyx settled their weight, and something in their outline sharpened. "The Veil grows thin at the solstice. Perhaps the Seer's grove is not the only pocket in this park." "Perhaps." She closed her fist around the stone, and the warmth ebbed to nothing. "Or she wanted me to find out." Across the pool, on the far bank where no one had stood a moment before, a woman was watching them. Silver hair fell past her waist. Her eyes were the pale lavender of a bruise just beginning to heal, and there was nothing beneath her feet, no bent grass, no press of earth, to say she'd ever walked there at all. "You are early," said Isolde Varga, and the bells stopped. "Which is only true if you are also late." Rory climbed down off the log. Behind her, Nyx made a small sound that might have been a laugh. "Told you," they whispered. "Riddles."
