<nc-section data-title="Version 1: A Knight's Welcome" data-color="red"> The gates groaned open, and a stable boy hurried out to take Thunder's reins. I swung down from the saddle, my legs stiff after the long ride, and tried to look like someone who belonged here. "You'll be the new squire." The voice was deep and gravelly. A tall man stood in the shadow of the stable doors, arms folded across a chest that had clearly taken more than a few blows over the years. A scar ran from his left brow to the edge of his jaw, and his graying beard was neatly trimmed. His eyes, though, were what held me: sharp and gray, and measuring me the way a smith measures a blade. "Frederick, sir," I said, and bowed so quickly I nearly lost my balance. "Sir Roland." He stepped into the light, and the corner of his mouth twitched. "Steady, lad. You've not been knighted yet, and I'd hate for you to fall on your face before you've been taught how to do it properly." I felt my cheeks burn, but he clapped a heavy hand on my shoulder and steered me toward Thunder, running an appraising hand along the stallion's neck. "Fine animal. Better than most squires bring." He glanced back at me. "Let's hope the rider proves worthy of him. Come. Supper is at dusk, and training begins at dawn. Don't be late for either." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 2: The Smell of Hay and Steel" data-color="green"> The stables smelled of hay, leather, and horses, a comforting scent that eased the knot in my stomach. I was still stroking Thunder's nose when I heard the ring of boots on cobblestone and the faint clink of mail. "Ah! The boy from the eastern road. We had begun to think you'd lost your way." Sir Roland was not what I had imagined. I had pictured a stern giant in polished plate, but the man before me was round-bellied and ruddy-cheeked, with a wild tangle of red hair and a laugh that seemed to start somewhere near his boots. He wore a battered leather jerkin, and there was a smear of flour on his sleeve. "Forgive the state of me," he said, following my gaze. "The cook and I have a wager over her honey cakes, and I am losing badly. Sir Roland, at your service. And you are Frederick." "Yes, sir. Thank you for receiving me." "Receiving you? Lad, we've been praying for a new pair of hands. The last squire left to become a cheesemaker." He winked. "Do you like cheese?" I didn't know what to say to that, so I said nothing, and he laughed again, loud enough to make Thunder toss his head. "You'll do," said Sir Roland. "Come, let me show you where you'll sleep. And if anyone asks, you never saw the flour." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 3: Whispers at Dusk" data-color="blue"> Dusk pooled in the courtyard like spilled ink. Torches were being lit along the walls, and their flames trembled in the wind. I led Thunder toward the stables, and it was there, in the half-dark, that I realized I was not alone. "You ride like someone being chased." The knight stood so still against the timbers that I had mistaken him for part of the building. He was lean and weathered, his cloak dark, his hand resting easily on the pommel of a sword worn smooth with use. "Sir Roland?" I asked, for the letter of introduction had spoken of him. "The same." His gaze passed over me, then over the empty road behind me, and lingered there a moment too long. "Tell me, Frederick, did you see anything on your journey? Anything unusual in the sky?" The question caught me off guard. "The sky, sir? No. Only the sunset." "Good." He exhaled slowly, though his shoulders did not loosen. "Then let us keep it that way. There are stories in this kingdom, boy, and some of them have begun to walk again." Before I could ask what he meant, he turned and pulled open the stable door. Warm light spilled out, and with it the ordinary sounds of horses shifting in their stalls. "Come. Settle your stallion. We will speak more once you have eaten. Not everything is meant for the courtyard, and the walls here have ears." </nc-section>
