You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The gate in the iron railings had been left open, which Rory thought was the first wrong thing about the night. Richmond Park at two in the morning should have been locked, the deer bedded down in the bracken, the only sound the occasional car sighing along the far road. Instead the grass lay silver under a half moon, and the path ahead curved away between the bracken into dark that seemed deeper than trees could make it. "Don't look back at the gate," Isolde said. She walked a pace ahead, silver hair loose down her back, and she made no sound at all. Rory had watched her cross a patch of frost ten minutes earlier and seen only the ground unmarked behind her, the frost undisturbed. "Looking back is how people end up walking home for a week." "That's not reassuring," Rory said. "It was not meant to be." Beside Rory, the shadow at her left shoulder shifted and thinned, then folded itself into a tall, narrow shape that was somehow more solid than the dark around it. Nyx's voice came from nowhere in particular, soft as wind moving through dry leaves. "She is trying to frighten you, Aurora. It is one of her few pleasures." "Rory," she said automatically. "And I'm not frightened." "Your heartbeat says otherwise." She ignored that and kept her hand near the hilt at her hip. The Fae blade sat in its sheath, and even through the leather it was cold, a clean cold that had nothing to do with the January air. Isolde had given it to her with the warning that it would cut through any ward laid by human or demon, and the look that came with it had suggested Rory might one day need that more than she wanted to. The pendant at her throat stirred. She felt it before she saw anything: a faint warmth against her breastbone, the Heartstone pulsing once, like a held breath released. She pressed her fingers over it through her coat. Nothing in Dymas should be near enough to a Hel portal to make the stone react, and she had no idea whether that was a comfort or a warning. The path opened. Standing stones rose on either side in a ring of grey and moss-furred oak, the trunks so old they had become more stone than wood, bark split into deep grooves. Rory counted them without meaning to. Eleven. Twelve. The last stood a little apart, and she realised she had walked between two of them without noticing the moment of crossing. The air changed. It was warmer, and it smelled of crushed thyme and honey and something sharper underneath, like rain on hot iron. Then she saw the flowers. They grew everywhere, through the grass and up the flanks of the stones, between the roots of the oaks: foxgloves, primroses, wild violets, white clover in lazy drifts, and a dozen blooms she had no name for, petals luminous as if lit from within. It was the middle of winter. Her breath still clouded in front of her. Yet the meadow beyond the stones was in full summer, humming with bees that glowed faintly gold where they crossed the moonlight. "Oh," Rory breathed, and hated how small the word sounded. "Yes," said Isolde, and for once she sounded almost gentle. "Everyone says that." Rory pulled out her phone to check the time. The screen was dark, then flickered to life and showed a number she didn't recognise, a clock running backward in slow, patient digits. She turned it off. When she looked up, the moon had moved a hand's width across the sky, though she had only blinked. "Time is a courtesy here," Nyx murmured. "It is not obliged to keep pace with the world you left." They walked on through the meadow. The grass brushed her knees and was warm, as if the earth beneath it had been sun-soaked all day. Water sounded ahead: a narrow stream ran over smooth black stones, and where it pooled, the surface reflected not the sky but a vast branching canopy of roots and lanterns hanging in dark space. Rory crouched at the edge and saw her own face there, pale and too still, and behind it, very briefly, a pale lavender eye that was not hers. She stood quickly. On the far bank, half hidden in ferns, a circle of stones had been set into the earth, carved with spirals that seemed to move when she didn't look directly at them. Something had been burned into the central slab, a shape like a hand with too many fingers, blackened and fresh. Rory's stomach tightened. She thought of the rift points the Wardens watched in their dull grey reports, the tears in the Veil that no one was supposed to walk through. "Someone has been here recently," she said. "Someone has been here for a very long time," Isolde corrected. "The recently is merely the part you are able to see." Nyx drifted closer to the carving. Their violet eyes brightened, and the shadow pooled under them grew darker and longer. "Dymasian work," they said quietly. "Gluttony's brand. Someone from the vineyards has been paying a debt here." The pendant burned against her skin. Rory's hand went to her throat, and she felt, distinctly, the pulse answer something beyond the stream, deeper into the glowing dark, where the flowers thinned and the air carried the faint sweet rot of over-ripened fruit. Isolde had stopped at the water's edge. She did not turn around. "You wanted to know why you were brought here, Aurora Carter," she said. "The answer is ahead of you, and it is hungry, and it has been waiting for the one who wears that stone." Rory looked at the path, then at the blade cold against her hip, and took the first step anyway.
