You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The oaks came into view just after the bracken gave way to short, silver-tipped grass. Aurora counted them without meaning to. Nine stones, each taller than a man, leaned toward one another like old women sharing a secret. Moss furred their faces. Someone had carved spirals into the nearest one, and the lines had worn so smooth that her fingers itched to trace them. Isolde stepped between two of the stones and did not pause. Her silver hair slid down her back like poured mercury, catching the last of the dusk. Aurora watched the frost on the path. It bore the marks of Nyx's boots, the scuff of her own trainers, and the dog-prints of a jogger from that morning. Isolde's heel came down on the same frost, and the white stayed unbroken. "You're staring at the ground again," Isolde said, without turning. "The ground has nothing to tell you that the sky hasn't already said." "The ground is the only thing here that makes sense to me," Aurora said. "Forgive me for wanting something solid under my feet." "Solid is a lovely word for a thing that moves when you are not looking." Nyx drifted up beside her. Where the light from the lamp posts along the road failed to reach, their outline seemed to pool on the grass, and the shadows of the oaks bent toward them as if drawn on a string. The violet glow of their eyes flickered once. "She is baiting you, Rory. Don't give her the satisfaction of a reaction." "I'm not reacting." "Your jaw is doing the thing." Aurora unclenched it. The voice Nyx used sounded like a breath blown across an open bottle, low enough that she felt it in her teeth more than heard it. She had stopped being unsettled by that months ago. She had not stopped feeling it. They passed between the stones. The air changed first. It went from the bite of late October to something warm and damp, like the inside of a greenhouse after rain. Then the sound changed. The traffic from Richmond Park Road, the distant hum of the city, the rustle of the wind through the bracken, all of it dropped away in a single breath, as though someone had lowered a lid over the world. Aurora heard her own pulse. Beside her, Nyx's footsteps made no sound at all. "Oh," she said. The clearing opened in front of them, and the light was wrong. It was not sunset, and it was not dawn. It had the amber softness of late afternoon in midsummer, though the sky above the oaks was a deep violet bruise with stars pricked through it. The grass underfoot was dense and cool. Wildflowers grew in drifts of colour she had no names for: petals the blue of a gas flame, blooms so pale yellow they seemed made of candle wax, clusters of bell-shaped things that hummed faintly when the breeze brushed them. Every stem was in flower. She saw buds opening as she watched, and old blossoms folding into seed, all at the same time. "Wildflowers bloom year-round here," Isolde said. "Do not pick them. They remember hands." Aurora pulled her fingers back from a stalk of pale gold. She had not realised she had reached for it. They walked on. A stream wound through the centre of the glade, so clear that she could count the pebbles on its bed, though when she looked down at the water, it reflected a sky with no moon in it. Small silver fish turned in the current, and each one left a faint ripple of light behind, like a struck match trailing smoke. Aurora crouched at the bank and let her fingertips hover above the surface. The air above the water felt colder than the air beside it. Her hand moved to the chain at her throat without her meaning it to. The Heartstone Pendant sat against her collarbone, and she felt the faint warmth in it stir, the way it had done in the flat above Silas' bar the night the fizzing had started in the pipes. Warm, then cool again. She pressed her palm flat against her sternum and said nothing. Nyx was watching her. The violet of their eyes narrowed. Neither of them spoke about it. "How old is this place?" Aurora asked instead, standing up and brushing off her knees. Isolde stopped beneath the largest tree in the clearing. Its trunk was wider than a car and split into a dozen limbs, and its bark had a silvery sheen, like the scales of a fish. Something had been carved into the wood at head height, long ago, and the letters were not any alphabet Aurora recognised. They shifted when she looked at them, reordering into shapes she almost read before they slid away again. "Older than your language has words for," Isolde said. "Older than the first person who thought to ask such a question. Here, time does not flow. It pools. An hour spent beneath these branches may be the blink of an eye to the city beyond the stones. Or it may be a season. Or three." "That's not an answer," Aurora said. "No. It is a warning dressed as one. You are welcome to decide which." Nyx laughed, a soft hiss like wind slipping through a crack. "She cannot lie, Rory. Only mislead. Listen carefully to what she does not say." Aurora's hand drifted toward the hilt at her hip, where the Fae-forged blade rested in its sheath. Even through the leather, the metal was cold, colder than the night air, a steady ache that seemed to pull her thoughts into a neat, sharp line. The moonsilver would glow when the moon came out. She did not know whether there would be a moon here. "Why bring us in now?" she asked. Isolde turned at last. Her pale lavender eyes held the violet of the sky without catching any of its colour. "Because the Veil is thinning at the rift points, and the Wardens are counting the stones. And because something in your chest has begun to answer something beneath the earth." Aurora's breath stalled in her throat. Beside her, Nyx went very still, the edges of their shape wavering like smoke caught in a draught. Somewhere deep in the glade, a bell-shaped flower began to hum.
