You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

Two people who parted on complicated terms are forced together again when one shows up unannounced at the other's flat. There's history between them — attraction, hurt, and things left unsaid. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The third deadbolt was still sliding back when the knock came again, two measured raps that Rory would have known anywhere. She stood frozen with her hand on the brass knob, the curry-house smell rising through the floorboards from the restaurant below, and listened to the silence on the other side of the door. "Eva's out," she said through the wood. "If you're looking for her, she's in Lisbon until Sunday." "I'm not looking for Eva." Lucien's voice was low, unhurried, the vowels worn smooth by years of French and English and whatever other languages he spoke when he was angry. "I'm looking for you, Aurora. Open the door, or I'll stand here until the neighbours call the police, and we both know how that conversation would go." She almost laughed. Almost. Instead she pulled the door open and let the cold air of Brick Lane pour in around him. He looked exactly as he always had, which was the most infuriating thing about him. The charcoal suit was tailored to the line of his shoulders. The platinum hair was combed back without a single strand out of place. He leaned on the ivory-handled cane as though it were an affectation rather than a necessity, and his mismatched eyes, one amber and one black as a moonless sky, took her in from her bare feet to the cardigan she'd pulled over her shirt. Those eyes lingered on her face. Then they dropped, very briefly, to her left wrist, to the thin crescent scar she'd carried since she was seven, and something moved behind his expression before he schooled it away. "You've cut your hair," he said. "It's been six months, Luc. I'm allowed to cut my hair." "It suits you." He said it quietly, as though it cost him something, and she hated that it still made her chest tighten. "You can't just turn up here." She stepped back, not inviting him in, but not closing the door either. Her heart was beating too hard, and she was furious at it for doing so. "You don't get to disappear without a word and then knock on my friend's door like you've been popping round for tea." "I left a note." "You left a note that said *I'm sorry, it's not safe, don't look for me.*" She heard her own voice rise and forced it down. The flat was small, and the walls were thin, and Mrs. Akhtar in the flat next door had ears like a bat. "That is not a note. That's a eulogy with better handwriting." Something flickered across his face. "Would you have preferred the truth?" "I would have preferred *anything* that didn't make me feel like I'd imagined the last year." He was silent for a long moment. Behind her, Ptolemy padded out from the bedroom, tail high, and wound around her ankles before fixing Lucien with the flat, judgmental stare reserved for strangers and dogs. Lucien glanced down at the cat, then back up at her. "May I come in?" he asked. "Five minutes. I won't ask you for anything you don't wish to give." She should say no. Every sensible part of her said no. The sensible part of her had spent six months rebuilding a life in a city that didn't know her name, learning to sleep without listening for a key in the lock, learning that a man could be tender and brilliant and still walk away when it suited him. But Eva had warned her about this, hadn't she? Eva had said that Lucien's world would find its way to her sooner or later, because it always did, and that when it did, Rory would need to be clear-headed. Rory had always been clear-headed. It was the one thing she'd never lost. "Five minutes," she said, and stepped aside. He moved past her, close enough that she caught the scent of cedar and rain and something faintly metallic, like a coin held too long in the hand. The flat seemed to shrink around him. He stood in the middle of the room, surrounded by Eva's towers of books and drifts of research notes, and for a moment he simply looked, as though he were memorising the room. "You've been staying here," he said. "Feeding the cat. Watering the plants. Trying not to set fire to anything in the kitchen." She shut the door, then turned the first deadbolt, the second, the third, the sound loud in the quiet. "Don't make me regret it." He turned to face her. The amber eye caught the lamplight. The black one didn't reflect anything at all. "There's something coming, Rory," he said, and for the first time since he'd arrived, his voice was not steady. "Something I should have warned you about before I left. And I'm not here because I miss you. Or not only because I miss you." Her breath caught. "Then why are you here?" Lucien's gaze held hers, and the silence between them stretched taut as wire. "Because I need you to trust me," he said, "and I have no right to ask."
