You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The frost had not yet burned off Richmond Park when they reached the oaks. Aurora could still hear the distant hum of traffic along the Sheen Gate Road, the thin metallic ticks of the cold cooling in the bare branches, and her own breath going out in pale clouds. Then Isolde stepped between two standing stones, and the sounds fell away as if someone had shut a door. Aurora followed without thinking, then stopped and turned back. The gap between the stones showed only more trees, a grey December morning, and a fallen log furred with moss. When she looked forward again, the morning was gone. "Don't look back too long," Isolde said. She had not turned around. Her silver hair moved down her back like water poured slowly from a jug, and the pale lavender of her eyes caught a light that did not come from any sky Aurora could see. "The path remembers those who doubt it." "That's not exactly reassuring," Aurora said. "It was not meant to reassure. It was meant to be true." Beside her, Nyx made a sound that might have been a laugh. The Shade's silhouette thinned at the edges, as it often did in daylight, and then gathered itself again into the tall, shifting outline of a person made of dusk. Their violet eyes drifted across the clearing. "She has been practising that one," Nyx murmured, and the voice was like wind moving through dry leaves. "Her riddles get better every century." "Three hundred years of practice," Isolde said serenely. "I have had time." Aurora kept her hand near the hilt at her hip. The Fae-forged blade lay cold against her palm even through her coat, a cold that did not fade with her warmth. Under her shirt the Heartstone pendant rested against her sternum, and she felt it stir. It was not the sharp heat it gave near a Hel portal. This was softer, a slow warmth, like a hand laid on her chest. She frowned and touched it through the fabric. "It's doing something." "It is listening," said Isolde. "To what?" "To the grove. Everything here listens. That is why it is so difficult to keep secrets." The ground underfoot changed as they walked. The hard, damp earth of the park gave way to a carpet of grass so fine and green it looked painted, and the grass was threaded with flowers. Violets, white anemones, a blue so intense it hurt to look at directly. Foxglove stood in tall pink spires beside the roots of trees whose leaves were still full and gold, as though it were October in some other country and summer in another. Bees moved among the blossoms, slow and fat. Aurora heard them, a deep drone that filled the clearing like the sound of a river heard through a wall. "Wildflowers all year," Nyx said. "The grove does not know the calendar. It has never needed one." Aurora crouched and touched a violet. Its petals were cool and slightly damp, like a morning leaf. Where her fingers brushed the stem, a tiny crescent of pale light bloomed along the skin of her left wrist, over the old scar from the accident when she was seven. She stared at it, then pulled her sleeve down quickly, heart knocking. Nyx drifted closer. "Do you feel it too?" "It's like it recognised me," she said slowly. "Perhaps it did." Isolde's voice came from ahead, distant and unbothered. "Or perhaps you touched something that was already touching you." Aurora stood, brushing soil from her knees, and followed the seer deeper. The oaks grew closer together, their trunks thick and grooved, and between them stood more stones, taller than the first, black and seamed with silver lichen. Some leaned together like old men in conversation. Others had split down the middle, the halves held apart by roots as thick as Aurora's arm. Carved into the face of the nearest was a spiral that seemed to shift when she looked away, though she could never catch it moving. "Who built these?" she asked. "No one built them," Isolde said. "They were grown. Much as the old things grow." "That's not an answer." "No," Isolde agreed, "but it is what I have." Nyx stopped at the base of a stone and laid a hand, or a shape that served as a hand, against its surface. The shadows around their fingers stretched and deepened, pooling into the cracks of the bark-like rock. "There is a hollow beneath this one," they said. "A current. It moves toward the centre." They turned their head, and the violet light in their eyes flickered. "It is very old, Aurora. Older than the Veil, I think. Older than the borders anyone has drawn." Aurora looked at the stone, then at the shadow-pooled crevice. The air there was colder, and when she breathed in, she tasted something sharp, like iron and rain. Her pendant pulsed once, brighter, and the warmth spread across her chest in a slow tide. "Is that Hel?" she asked quietly. Isolde's head tilted. Her answer, when it came, was delicate as a thread. "Hel is a house with many doors. Some of them are kitchens." Nyx gave the same soft laugh. "She means no," they said. "Not yet." "That's not a no," Aurora muttered. "It is never a no," said Isolde, and walked on. They reached the centre of the grove as the light changed. It did not dim or brighten. It simply shifted, the way a page turns, and the trees opened to reveal a clearing ringed by a dozen stones, each one humming faintly with a note Aurora felt in her teeth rather than heard. In the middle lay a pool so still it might have been glass, reflecting a sky that was not quite the sky above, a sky the colour of wine held up to a window. Aurora stepped to the edge and looked down. Her reflection looked back, pale and steady, but for a heartbeat, the water showed a second figure standing behind her, tall and crowned in silver, and then it was only her again. She didn't speak. Neither did the others. Somewhere behind the oaks, something that might have been a bird began to sing, and the song seemed to go on far longer than any bird's breath should allow.
