You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The ladder bolted to the ventilation shaft had rusted to the colour of dried blood, and it shivered under Harlow Quinn's weight as she descended. Forty feet below the Camden pavement, the air tasted of wet brick and something sweeter underneath, like fruit left too long in a bowl. Her torch found the platform in pieces: a curved white tile wall, advertisements for a brand of tea that had folded in the seventies, and the black mouth of a tunnel that breathed out a slow draught. "Mind the third rung," said DC Tom Pryce from the bottom. He held a lamp at chest height, and the light made his face look older than his thirty-two years. "Two of the lads already went through it." "Did they go through it or did they step on it?" "Does it matter?" Quinn reached the concrete and let her boots settle. "It matters to me. Where is he?" Pryce swung the lamp to the far end of the platform. A man sat with his back against the tiles, legs stretched out in front of him as if he had stopped for a rest on a long walk. He wore a navy wool coat, the good kind, and a pair of trainers that had never seen a pavement. Water had soaked his clothes through. Quinn could see it darkening the collar and pooling in the creases of his trousers. The silt on the platform was dry all around him, a pale grey crust that cracked under the lamp. "Fell down the shaft, we reckon," Pryce said. "Pissed, probably. Or on something. Lab will tell us. Sad bastard wandered down here for a kip and never got up." "Wet," Quinn said. "Sorry?" "He's wet. The platform isn't." She crouched beside the body without touching it. "Look at the floor. Nothing has pooled here. Nothing has run towards the drain. If he came down the shaft soaked, the water would be spreading out from him, and it isn't." Pryce shifted his weight. "Could've soaked up into the silt." "It hasn't soaked. It's sitting on his coat like it's waiting for someone to pick it up." She turned her torch on the dead man's hands. They rested palm-up on his thighs, fingers curled slightly, and the skin across his knuckles had gone a waxy white and split along the joints. Frost-bite. In late July, in a Tube tunnel where the thermometer on the wall read nineteen degrees. "Get the lab to look at his fingers before they bag them," she said. "I want to know what the tissue looks like under a microscope." "You're going to tell me he froze to death in a sweaty tunnel in summer." "I'm going to tell you he didn't drown, and the frostbite is the least strange thing about him." She leaned closer to the watch on his left wrist. The glass had cracked across the face, and the hands had stopped at twelve minutes past three. The strap was cheap plastic. The dial bore a logo she had seen only once before, on a dead man's desk three years ago, a tiny circle with a horizontal bar through it. "Did you see his watch?" "It's a knock-off." "It's a knock-off of nothing that's sold in this country." She tilted the torch. "And there's a bone in his right hand." Pryce stepped forward and played his lamp across the palm. A flat piece of pale bone, no larger than a coin, had been pressed into the flesh and the fingers had closed over it. Someone had carved a spiral into its surface. "Could be a button," Pryce said. "Or a bit of a dog." "Could be." Quinn stood and turned in a slow circle. Her eyes moved along the tiles at the height of a seated man's head. There, a faint ring of blackened tile, the glaze crazed in a pattern like frost on a window. Not soot. Soot smeared. This had bitten into the surface. "Pryce, what's that?" He squinted. "Damp. Mould." "Mould doesn't cook the glaze." She walked to the tunnel mouth. The breeze swept over her face, carrying that sweet rot again. Her torch picked out a line of small footprints in the silt, leading from the shaft ladder toward the dead man. They were neat, deep at the heel, and the toes pointed in the same direction. They stopped a metre from the body, and beside them the silt had been disturbed in a half circle, as if someone had knelt and then risen. "Did the lads walk this?" "Probably." "Then tell them to stop." She knelt beside the prints and studied the depth. "Someone stood here. Long enough to kneel. Then they went back the way they came." She lifted her head and aimed the torch at the bottom rung of the ladder. The metal had a fresh scrape along its edge, bright against the rust. "And someone climbed up. But the ventilation grate at the top has been bolted from the inside, and the bolts are rusted solid. Nobody has opened that grate in years." Pryce's jaw tightened. "So he came down another way." "Maybe." She straightened. Her left hand drifted to the leather watch strap on her wrist and she turned the buckle without thinking. "But the footprints don't go to the tunnel, Tom. They go to the ladder. And the only way out of this station, as far as the survey says, is that grate." Something caught the lamp light near the base of the tiles. Quinn bent and picked it up between two gloved fingers. A small brass compass, its casing furred with green verdigris, the glass cracked. The face had been etched with a ring of tiny symbols, worn but still legible, and the needle inside trembled, then swung hard toward the dark mouth of the tunnel and stayed there, pointing at nothing she could see.
