You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

Two people who parted on complicated terms are forced together again when one shows up unannounced at the other's flat. There's history between them — attraction, hurt, and things left unsaid. Write the scene from the moment the door opens. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The knock came at ten past eleven, three slow raps that cut through the bass rattling up from Silas' bar. Rory had been half-asleep over a cold mug of tea and the last page of a delivery manifest she had no intention of finishing. She set the mug down, stood, and did not hurry. Nobody who mattered to her knocked like that. Nobody who mattered to her knocked at all, not after the last time. She opened the door with the chain still on. Lucien Moreau stood on the landing under the bare bulb, one hand resting on the ivory head of his cane. The charcoal suit was immaculate, as always, the platinum hair slicked back as though the rain had never dared touch it. It must have rained. His shoulders were dark with it. Above the collar his face was composed in the particular way it went when he was about to say something he had rehearsed in the car. His eyes did the rest. The left was amber, the right black as a well, and both looked at her as if she were a sum he had already worked out and didn't like. "Aurora," he said. Nobody called her that anymore except her mother, on the phone, when she was in trouble. Lucien had called her that in a hotel room in Marseille, with the shutters open and the harbour lights bleeding across the ceiling, and he had said it in exactly this voice right before he left. "You can't just turn up," she said. "I know." "It's eleven at night. I could have been out." "You're not out. You're never out. You work at the Golden Empress six days a week and you spend the seventh pretending you don't miss it." He tilted his head. "May I come in, or shall we do this through a crack in the door like a pair of Victorian spinsters?" "We shall do it through a crack in the door." Something moved at the corner of his mouth, not quite a smile. "Fair enough." She should have closed it. She knew the exact weight of the door in her hand, the click of the latch, the three steps back to the sofa. Instead she heard herself say, "Who sent you?" "No one sent me." "Then how did you find me?" "You moved to Silas' building eight months ago and didn't tell anyone. I'm a fixer, Rory. Finding things is the only job I have left that I'm good at." He paused. "Also, Eva told me." "Eva doesn't tell you anything." "Eva told me on the phone last week, in a voice that suggested she would like very much to put her fist through my face. It was surprisingly educational." Rory let out a breath that was not quite a laugh. Down below, Silas' bouncer shouted at someone to get off the pavement. The bass dropped, rose again. Her wrist ached where the old scar ran in its small crescent, the way it always did when the air turned cold. She pressed her thumb against it without meaning to. Lucien's gaze dropped to the movement, then came back up, and she saw him remember. He always noticed things like that. It had been one of the most dangerous things about him. "I'm not here to fight," he said quietly. "Then what are you here for?" "I owe you a conversation I was too much of a coward to have." His good hand tightened on the cane. "And I need your help with something that I cannot do alone, and which I would rather die than ask you for, so you may take as long as you like to refuse me." "That's not an invitation." "No," he agreed. "It's a confession with a request attached. I've always been bad at packaging." She looked at him through the gap. The ivory handle, the hidden blade she knew was in there, because he had shown her once in the harbour cafe, laughing, as if it were a party trick. The mismatched eyes that had once seemed to her like proof that the world contained contradictions and could still be trusted to hold them. The mouth that had said things in four languages, none of them true, and one of them, in the dark, very much true. "You left me," she said. It came out steadier than she felt. "You walked out and didn't look back, and you let me find out what you'd done from a man with a gun in a car park." "Yes." "You don't get to stand on my landing and say yes like that's enough." "It isn't enough." His voice didn't rise. "It was never going to be. I told myself I was protecting you. That was a lie I told myself so often I started to enjoy the taste of it." Her throat closed. She hated that. She hated that he could still do this to her, cut through every careful wall she had built in London with a handful of plain words. "Say what you came to say, then," she managed. He looked at her for a long moment, both eyes steady. "I still think about the harbour," he said. "Every night. And I am so sorry, Aurora, that I made you the one who had to leave with nothing but a bag and a bruise." The word *bruise* landed like a dropped glass. She had told no one about that, not even Eva, not really. She had only ever told Lucien, in the dark, with her head on his chest. Rory reached for the chain.
