You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The standing stones rose out of the bracken like the ribs of something buried and patient. Rory counted them as she passed between the two nearest, oak gone silver with age, their bark furred with a moss so green it looked wet. There were nine. She counted again to be sure, and got nine, and then, when she looked back over her shoulder at the path they had just walked, she could not find the road. "Don't do that," said Nyx, at her elbow. The voice came the way wind moves through a half-open window, soft and everywhere at once. "Counting is how the grove keeps you." "I wasn't counting for any reason," Rory said. "I was checking." "Checking is counting with worry in it." She glanced sideways. Nyx had come out of the shadow of the nearest stone rather than walking through the gap, and for a moment their shape was a tall column of dusk, six feet and some inches of it, with two faint violet points where a face should be. Then the shape thinned, and solid shoulders and a long coat of night-black fabric resolved from the gloom, and they were only a figure standing too still on the grass. Rory had stopped being surprised by this. Mostly. Ahead, Isolde Varga walked without seeming to walk. Her silver hair moved behind her in a slow fall, catching a light that Rory could not locate, since the sky overhead had been a clean grey October afternoon when they had left the car park and was now something else entirely. The sky here was the colour of pewter cooling, with a single pale band near the horizon the shade of a sunrise that hadn't decided yet. Rory looked down at the ground and felt her stomach tilt. The grass was thick and very green, and she could see every blade, but there was no sound of her boots on it. She lifted one foot and set it down again. Nothing. Beside her, Nyx left no mark either, which she supposed was expected. Isolde left none at all, and Rory had been trying not to think about that since Richmond Gate. "You are looking at my feet," Isolde said without turning. "Do not. They are not the interesting part." "What is the interesting part?" "Whatever you have not yet noticed." The seer paused beneath a crooked hawthorn and turned, and her pale lavender eyes moved over Rory with the frank patience of someone reading a page. "You carry a thing that wants to be warm. Do you feel it?" Rory touched the place under her collar where the Heartstone pendant lay against her skin. The silver chain was cool. The stone beneath her fingers was not. It had gone warm the way a cup warms in your hands, and a faint inner glow was seeping through the fabric of her shirt. Dymas, the thing had told her in her dreams, though nothing had ever told her what Dymas was. Only that the pendant knew it. "Yes," she said. "Good. Then you are not wholly lost." Isolde smiled, which made her seem younger and much older at once. "Only partly." They went on. The grove opened gradually, like a hand unfolding. Wildflowers grew in drifts across the clearing, and Rory saw that they were all in bloom at once: foxglove and bluebell, meadowsweet, violets, and things she had no name for, with petals like hammered copper and centres that breathed slow light. Bees moved between them, but the bees were silent, and the air carried a sweetness so thick it almost had weight. Somewhere beyond the trees a bird was singing a long, descending phrase, and then the phrase came again, and Rory understood after the third repetition that it was not a bird at all but a voice, pitched too high for her to hear clearly, and that it was telling a story she was not yet old enough to understand. She noticed the hilt of the Fae blade pressing against her hip through the lining of her jacket. Isolde had given it to her in a rain-soaked car park with no explanation beyond *you will need it, and you will not need it for a long while, and you will be glad of it when you do.* The moonsilver blade was never warm, not even in her pocket, and in the grey light it was giving off a faint, uneasy luminance, like frost forming on a window. "Why is it glowing?" she asked. "It is listening," said Isolde. "Something close by has a shadow that does not belong to it." Nyx made a sound that was almost a laugh and was not quite. "Only one of us is out of place here, and it is not me." Rory's hand went to the blade's grip without her quite deciding it. The pale light along its edge brightened, then dimmed, as the clearing ahead widened into a ring of older trees, their trunks blackened as if by some ancient fire that had never truly gone out. Between them, the ground dipped into a shallow bowl, and at its centre lay a pool so still it reflected the sky perfectly, the strange pewter and that wounded band of dawn, while the rest of the grove was dim. Rory stepped to the lip of the bowl and looked down. Her reflection did not look back up at her right away. For one long breath there was only water, and then her face surfaced in it, a half-second late, and it was not quite smiling. Behind her, Isolde said softly, "Now we begin."
