You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective arrives at a crime scene in an unusual location. Something is wrong — the evidence doesn't add up. A colleague is present, offering a different interpretation. Through careful observation and deduction, the detective begins to see what others have missed. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The platform at Camden Town had been closed since the war, or so the signage claimed. The tiles were cracked in long diagonal seams, and the advertisements for a long-dead tonic had faded to the color of weak tea. Harlow Quinn stepped over a puddle that shouldn't have been there, since the tunnel above had been dry for decades, and felt the damp soak through the sole of her left shoe. "Ma'am." Detective Constable Ruth Ashdown lifted the cordon tape with one gloved hand. Her breath clouded in the cold. "You'll want to see the body before the Coroner's people start shouting." "Tell me what the body is before I see it." Ashdown consulted her notebook, though Quinn suspected she had the summary memorized. "Male, mid-fifties, name of Desmond Croft. Antiques dealer, Hampstead. Reported missing Tuesday. A rambler found him this morning in the old ticket hall, sat against the wall like he'd gone to sleep." "Cause?" "Not obvious. No wounds. No blood to speak of." Ashdown hesitated. "Sir Anthony's already been down. He says it's a heart event, drug overdose, something he'd have to look into." Quinn made a noncommittal sound. Sir Anthony Penhallow had been the Superintendent's favorite pathologist for twelve years, and he had a habit of arriving at conclusions before the bodies had finished cooling. The ticket hall opened into a vaulted space lit by two arc lamps the forensic team had set on tripods. Their white glare made the grime look worse than it was. Croft sat with his back to a tiled pillar, legs out, hands loose in his lap. His eyes were open. Someone had arranged his coat neatly over his knees, which was not something a man did for himself when dying. Quinn crouched at the edge of the light and studied him without touching anything. "Look at his palms," she said. Ashdown leaned in. "Dirty?" "Dirty, yes. But look at the pattern. That's soot, or graphite, pressed in lines. Like he'd been holding something with a grid pattern on it. Or drawing." The constable frowned. "Could be from the walls. Half of them are black with grime." "Could be." Quinn let her gaze drift to the floor. There, in a rough circle around the body, someone had scraped the dust away. Within the cleared ring, a set of marks had been drawn in a pale powder that did not appear to be chalk. She recognized none of the symbols, but she recognized the rhythm of them. Three arcs, a broken line, a closed loop. Three years ago she had seen that exact rhythm carved into the underside of a bench in a derelict warehouse in Stratford, a half-second before the floor had opened beneath DS Dan Morris and taken him. The file had said gas leak. The file had said the structure was unstable. The file had not said that Morris had walked into the building alone, his radio silent, and come out nowhere at all. Quinn kept her face still. Her watch ticked against the bone of her wrist, a sound she had long ago stopped hearing unless she was thinking about something she didn't want to think about. "Where's the entry point?" she asked. "Ma'am?" "The access. The gate at the top of the stairs is padlocked, and the grille on the service door has rust across the hinges. Nobody's opened either in years. So how did he get down here, and how did somebody get him to sit so neatly in the middle of a drawn circle?" Ashdown glanced toward the stairwell as though the answer might be waiting there. "Maybe he came in through the tunnels. There's a gap in the north wall, past the wall of old posters." "Show me." They picked their way through the debris. The gap was real, a jagged hole broad enough for a man to slip through sideways. Quinn ran her fingers along the edge. The brick was cold, but not damp. The soot on the lip of the hole was smudged in a single direction, toward the inside, as if something had been dragged out rather than crawled in. Then Ashdown said, "Ma'am, you're going to think I'm mad." "Try me." "My cousin works a stall at Camden Lock. Weekends. She says there's a market that moves around. Underground, you need a bone token to get in. Antiques, potions, that sort of thing." She shrugged, embarrassed. "She says it moves every full moon. It was in the Lock last month, she swears. Somebody's got a shop down here." Quinn looked at her for a long moment. Then she reached into her coat and drew out a small brass object, no bigger than a pocket watch, its casing dull with green verdigris. She had taken it from a dealer in Soho who had not wanted to sell it and had been very frightened of her afterward. The needle inside had been still since she bought it. Now it trembled. It swung slowly, deliberately, and settled on the gap in the wall. Ashdown stared. "What is that?" "A compass," Quinn said. "It points toward things that shouldn't be where they are." She stood. The arc lamps hummed. Somewhere deep in the tunnels, faint and rhythmic, a bell rang three times and fell silent. "Get me the coroner's report on Croft as soon as Penhallow signs it," Quinn said quietly. "And find out everything you can about Desmond Croft's last six months. Who he bought from. Who he sold to. And who in this city knows the word *Morris*."
