You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective arrives at a crime scene in an unusual location. Something is wrong — the evidence doesn't add up. A colleague is present, offering a different interpretation. Through careful observation and deduction, the detective begins to see what others have missed. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The platform at Camden Town had been dead for seventy years, and the dark still had the stillness of something that had never expected company. Harlow Quinn stood at the bottom of the stairwell and let her eyes adjust. Somewhere beyond the tape, water dripped in a slow, patient rhythm, each drop landing with a flat little click on tile. "Ma'am." Detective Constable Ray Dunmore came down the last steps two at a time, torch swinging. He was thirty, broad, and eager in the way of men who had not yet learned what eagerness cost. "Sorry. Access was a nightmare. The council's got this place sealed up tighter than a bank vault." "Who found him?" "Urban explorers. Two lads with a drone and a death wish." He consulted his notebook. "They came in through a maintenance grate on Kentish Town Road, got as far as the platform, and called it in when they saw him. They're in the back of a van, threw up twice. I've told them they'll probably want counselling." Quinn nodded and walked toward the light. Forensic lamps had been set up along the platform edge, throwing hard white circles across the grime. The body lay at the far end, near the mouth of the old tunnel, where the tiles were cracked into a mosaic of pale fault lines. A man in his late forties, dressed in a charcoal overcoat that had cost more than her monthly rent. He lay on his back, arms loose at his sides, eyes open. There was no blood, no visible wound, nothing to suggest violence. "Overdose," Dunmore said, following her gaze. "Look at his hand." In the dead man's right palm sat a small disc of yellowed bone, carved with a spiral and three notches. Quinn crouched without touching anything and studied it. "Pagan trinket," Dunmore said. "Some of these cults hand them out. Probably bought something off the internet, took too much, wandered down here to die where nobody would look." "Wandered down here." Quinn repeated it quietly. "Through a grate that was padlocked from the inside, into a station the council has spent four years trying to forget." "Lads got in." "Lads with a drone and a rope ladder, who had to cut a fence to do it." She stood. "Show me the prints." Dunmore hesitated, then led her to the dust along the platform edge. The forensic team had marked the trail with small yellow cones. A single line of footprints ran from the stairwell toward the body. They were sharp and deep, the heel strike clean, the stride long and even. "His," Dunmore said. "Size eleven, we think. Matches the shoes." "And going out?" Dunmore's mouth opened, then closed. "I'll check." Quinn did not wait. She walked the length of the platform with her head down, following the dust, and found what she had half expected. The prints ran to within two metres of the body and stopped. There was no scuffing, no drag mark, no sign of a turn. The man had simply walked to that point and ceased to leave tracks. She looked at the ceiling. Water beaded along a seam in the concrete and fell in a neat line, a metre to the left of the body, onto the tile. Not a single drop had touched his coat or his face. "Ray," she said. "Who moved him?" "Nobody, as far as I know. Why?" "Because the dust on his collar is undisturbed. Because his lividity sits on his back, but his hair is dry and the floor under his head is dry, and that water has been falling all night." She straightened. "He was carried, or he was laid here after death, and whoever did it was careful enough to leave only one set of prints on the way in and none on the way out." Dunmore frowned at the cones as if they had personally offended him. "Or he came in alone and the prints blew away." "Dust doesn't blow in a sealed tunnel." She took a breath and turned her attention to the one item she had been avoiding. Lying in the dust near the body's left hand, half-buried, was a small brass compass. Its casing had gone green at the edges, a fine verdigris patina creeping over old engravings. Quinn knelt again and looked at the face without touching it. Protective sigils had been etched around the rim, worn but legible. The needle did not rest at north. It trembled, slow and deliberate, pointing at the tiled wall beyond the tunnel mouth, where the cracked mosaic seemed, for a fraction of a second, to ripple like heat over tarmac. Her left wrist was cold. She realised she had been gripping her worn leather watch strap hard enough to hurt. "It's a toy," Dunmore said. "Tourist thing. Sold on Camden High Street." "No," Quinn said. "It isn't." Three years ago, Morris had died in a room with no windows and no exit, and the coroner had written *unexplained* in a box that should have held a cause. She had spent every night since trying to fill that box with something that made sense. She had not yet found the word that fit. She looked at the compass, then at the bone token, then at the wall where the needle pointed. Someone had come down here with the Market's tools in his pocket, walked into a tunnel that led nowhere, and died exactly where the trail gave out. And someone else had walked out again, leaving no prints at all. "Get me the names of everyone who's signed into that council access log in the last forty-eight hours," she said. "And Ray? Nobody touches that compass but me."
