You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The oaks began a hundred yards short of the clearing, and Rory counted them without meaning to. Eleven trunks, each one thick enough that three people couldn't have reached around it, ringed the path in a loose circle. Between them, grey stones stood shoulder-high, furred with moss the color of old bruises. The park's dusk had been ordinary when they left the road. Here it was thinner, the light sliding through the leaves in pale ribbons that didn't seem to come from any sun. "Don't touch the stones," Isolde said. She walked ahead without looking back, silver hair loose down her back and catching light that had no business being there. Rory watched the grass bend beneath her boots and spring up again behind her, unmarked. No footprints. She had stopped trying to explain that to herself. "Noted," Rory said. "Anything else we shouldn't do? Breathe too loudly? Think in the wrong direction?" "Think too much," said the wind, and it was not quite the wind. The voice slid along the back of Rory's neck like a whisper someone had carried a long way. Nyx drifted at the edge of the path, where the shadows of the oaks ran long and fractured. Their outline wavered between a tall human shape and something that had never been human at all. Two points of violet light glowed where a face should be. "Thinking is the dangerous part. Here, the mind goes out and comes back with things it wasn't carrying." Rory kept her hands in her jacket pockets. Her left wrist ached faintly over the crescent scar, the old reminder of a childhood fall she had never fully remembered. It was an odd thing to feel now, that small familiar sting, when everything else about the place was so unfamiliar. The clearing opened without warning. Wildflowers covered the ground, and they were blooming. Foxgloves stood tall beside clusters of white anemones, and nearby a bank of blue harebells rang softly as a breeze moved through them. Rory knew, with the certainty of someone who had studied botany for one miserable semester at Cardiff, that these flowers did not bloom together. Not in any season. Yet here they were, all in fullness, humming with a faint, bright scent like cut lemon and rain. "Beautiful," breathed Tom, the only one of them who had come because he wanted to see rather than because he needed something. He stepped forward, awestruck, reaching toward a blossom. "Stop," Isolde said, and her voice did not rise. It did not need to. Tom froze with his fingers an inch from the petals. "They are beautiful because they want you to stay. Bend down and you will not stand again until the spring after next, and your daughter will be grown." Tom's hand dropped. He backed up three careful steps and swallowed hard. "Right. Right. Not touching." Rory's pendant moved against her sternum. She felt it before she understood it, a faint warmth spreading through the silver chain beneath her shirt, as though someone had pressed a palm to her skin. The Heartstone had been warm before, near certain doorways in the city, a flicker of crimson like an ember under ash. She pulled it out and held it up. The gem glowed, faint and steady, the color of a deep wound. "It's reacting," she said quietly. "To what?" Tom asked. Isolde turned her pale lavender gaze toward the stone in Rory's palm. For a moment something moved behind her face, a flicker of recognition or grief. "To the far side of the Veil," she said. "Not here. Beyond. Dymas breathes through the cracks in this place, the way a sleeper breathes through an open window. Do not be afraid of the warmth. Be afraid when it stops." Rory closed her fingers around the pendant. "That's not reassuring." "No," Isolde agreed. "It was not meant to be." They crossed the clearing in silence. At its heart stood a single standing stone, taller than the rest, its surface carved over with spirals that seemed to shift when Rory looked away. Beside it, the air shimmered like heat over asphalt. A thin curtain of light hung there, and through it, impossibly, she could see grapevines heavy with fruit, and far beyond them, the gold glow of an amber sky. Nyx's voice came close, almost tender. "The Veil is thinner here. Solstice-thin, nearly. Hel is listening." "Listening for what?" Tom said. Nobody answered him. Rory's wrist throbbed again. Her breath came shallow and quick, and she realised with a jolt that the forest sounds had stopped. No birds. No rustling leaves. Only the hum of the flowers and, under it, a distant clatter like plates being set down in a kitchen that existed far away. Isolde stepped toward the shimmering curtain and then paused, glancing over her shoulder. "Time moves strangely in the Grove," she said. "An hour within may be a minute without, or a week. Whatever you intend to do, do it quickly, or do it with patience you do not possess." Rory drew a slow breath and let it out. Beneath her jacket, the Heartstone pulsed once, warm as a heartbeat, and she realised she was no longer sure which side of the Veil she was standing on.
