You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The hoarding around the old Camden platform had been painted over so many times that the plywood bowed in places like paper left out in the rain. Harlow Quinn ducked under the tape at the stairwell, and the air hit her all at once: cold, mineral, and tasting faintly of pennies. Somewhere below, water dripped with the patience of something that had never once needed to hurry. "Ma'am." DC Felix Dunmore came up the stairs two at a time, a paper cup of tea in each hand. He offered her one as if it were a peace treaty. "Took you long enough. Cold one." "Nobody's cold until the body is." She took the cup anyway and did not drink it. "Who found him?" "Night cleaner for the council. Said the gate was chained from the inside." Dunmore gestured with his cup toward the stairwell. "Which is either a locksmith's nightmare or a lad who fancied a kip somewhere nobody would look." Quinn's watch, the worn leather strap gone soft as chamois on her left wrist, read twenty past seven. She had been awake since five. The platform lights were off, and a pair of battery lamps on tripods threw white circles over the tiles, so the dead man lay in a bright patch surrounded by a dark that seemed to have weight. He was in his fifties, grey at the temples, wearing a charcoal overcoat that had cost more than most people's rent. He lay on his back, one arm flung toward the track bed, the other folded neatly across his chest. Someone had arranged that hand. The fingers were straight and close together, the way people lay their hands when they expected to be viewed. "Fell," Dunmore said. "Platform's twelve feet above the rails. Found him at the bottom of the stairs on the track side, but we reckon he went over the edge here." He pointed. "Took a knock to the back of the skull. Probably blacked out, banged his head on the way down. Could be he was looking for a place to shoot up. We found a spoon and a lighter in his coat pocket." "Could be," Quinn said, and crouched beside the body. She did not touch him yet. She looked at the tiles around his shoulders. A film of grey dust covered the platform, thick enough to take a print. In a rough half-circle around the body, the dust had been brushed away, leaving the tiles bare and pale. The sweep was clean. Whoever had done it had been careful, and had been in a hurry, because the brush marks ran in two directions at once. "Who swept the platform?" she asked. Dunmore frowned at the floor. "Did we? I don't think so. Scene's been untouched." "It's been touched. Just not by us." She followed the edge of the cleared patch with her eyes. Beyond it, the dust lay undisturbed, except for a single line of prints that came out of the dark near the far pillar and stopped a yard from the body. Quinn leaned closer. The prints were narrow, long, and the heels were sunk deeper than the toes, as though the walker had been carrying weight. There were no tread marks. Just the smooth impression of bare soles, or something soft enough to mimic them. "Get a photographer on those before anyone steps near them," she said. "And nobody walks this platform in shoes until they're done." "Ma'am, the lads have been up and down here since six." "Then the lads have been walking on evidence." She stood, knees cracking, and let her gaze travel up to the dead man's face. "What's his watch say?" Dunmore sighed and leaned over. "Stopped. Three twelve, looks like." "Battery?" "Probably. Those old ones, they go." "It's a mechanical movement. He's wound it. Look at the crown, it's been pulled out and pushed back." She pointed without touching. "Nobody winds a watch that's stopped by a knock on the head. And if he fell at three, why are his shoes dry?" Dunmore glanced down at the polished oxfords and then back at her, the lamplight making his face look older. "Ma'am, it's a Tube station with no roof. There's a hole in the ceiling the size of a bus. Rain comes through in sheets. There's a puddle by the stairs you could drown a dog in, and he never got his feet wet?" "Exactly." Quinn turned the word over like a coin. "The puddle is by the stairs. He never came near it, so he didn't come down those stairs. Or he didn't come down them alive." She straightened, and that was when she saw the compass. It lay half under the dead man's folded hand, wedged where his palm had been pressed against the tile. The casing was brass, small enough to fit in a closed fist, with a crust of green verdigris creeping from the seams. Quinn did not pick it up. She crouched again, and in the wavering lamplight she saw the face of it was marked with symbols, cut deep and clean, the sort of lines a patient hand spends hours on. The needle was not still. It trembled on its pivot, and as she watched, it swung slowly, unhurriedly, and settled pointing toward the far end of the platform, where the hoarding had been nailed across a tunnel mouth. Someone had painted a red cross on the plywood. Beneath it, in smaller letters, a lock had been fixed through a gap that was wider than it had any right to be. "Dunmore," she said quietly. "Is that hoarding sealed on the other side, or just on this one?" "What?" He came to her shoulder. "It's a bloody compass, ma'am. Some tourist souvenir. Shop on Camden High Street sells them by the bucket." "Does your tourist souvenir point to magnetic north?" Dunmore opened his mouth, then shut it again. Quinn watched the needle hold steady, pointing at the gap in the plywood. Then she looked down at the cleared circle around the body, the bare soles of the prints that walked in and never walked out, and the dead man's hand arranged so carefully over his heart. "Get a torch," she said. "And find out who's been drawing on that hoarding, because I think whoever carried him here didn't walk back the way they came."
