You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The oak stones stood in a ring at the edge of the bracken, black against a sky going the colour of old pewter. Rory counted them without meaning to. Nine. Each one was taller than a man and furred with lichen the pale green of brand-new leaves, though the air carried the bite of a December dusk and the ground beneath her boots was hard with frost. "Don't touch the stones," Isolde said, without turning around. "They remember hands." "Good to know," Rory said. "Is there anything else I shouldn't do, or should I just guess?" "Guessing is how most people arrive here," Isolde said. "Though not how they leave." Nyx laughed, a soft sound like wind moving through dry grass. The Shade had been walking at the edge of Rory's vision since the car park, slipping from one patch of shadow to the next, sometimes a silhouette cast by nothing at all. Now they drifted to the nearest stone and folded themselves against its base, and for a moment their outline bled into the bark until Rory could not tell where the oak ended and the darkness began. "It is quiet," Nyx whispered. "Quieter than it should be." Rory stepped between the stones. The shimmer came first, a warping at the edge of her sight, like heat over tarmac except that it was cold and it had a texture, a fine rippling that caught at her eyelashes. Then the Veil gave way with a sensation she could only describe as being unwrapped, and the sound of the park vanished. No traffic. No dog barking on the far side of the bracken. Only a silence so full it had weight. She looked down and found the frost gone. Beneath her boots, grass grew thick and green, dotted with clover, and tiny white flowers opened their faces to a sky that had not yet decided on a colour. Foxglove stood in clumps taller than her shoulder. Bluebells ran in a river down a gentle slope toward a valley she had not seen from the park, though she had walked this hill a dozen times in daylight. "Wildflowers in every season," Isolde said. "The grove never forgets it's supposed to be summer." Rory checked her watch. The second hand was moving, but backwards, a slow creeping retreat that made her stomach turn. She tapped the glass. It kept going. "Time is a guest here," Isolde said, "and guests do as they please. Come, Aurora. Walk where I walk." The Seer moved ahead through the flowers. Her silver hair hung to her waist and caught a light that came from nowhere, and when Rory looked at the path behind her, the grass was bent in a neat line where she had passed, yet there were no footprints at all. Rory had seen the same thing on the drive over, when Isolde had stepped out of the car onto gravel and the stones had not so much as shifted. It still made the back of her neck prickle. Something pressed against her chest. Rory's hand went to the Heartstone pendant beneath her coat. The silver chain was warm, and the crimson stone pulsed against her breastbone like a second heartbeat, faint but insistent. She had felt it do this only once before, near a rift in the Veil under a Hel-tainted bridge in Southwark. The warmth had a hint of something rich and sweet to it, the scent of roasting fat and honeyed fruit, and she hated how her mouth watered. "Something's wrong," she said. "Something is near," Isolde said, and the riddle in it made Rory want to shake her. "Whether it is wrong depends on who is standing at the door." "Helpful." "I am not here to help. I am here to show." Rory's left hand brushed the hilt at her hip, the Fae-forged blade in its sheath. Even through leather, the metal was cold enough to ache, always cold, always ready. Moonlight had not yet risen, but the blade glimmered faintly all the same, like frost on a window. They crested the rise, and the grove opened below them. It was a bowl of silver water, perhaps a hundred yards across, fed by a stream that ran uphill over its own bed, bubbling as it climbed the lip of the basin and vanished into the air. Lanterns hung from the boughs of ancient trees, though they were not lanterns but moths, thousands of them, their wings glowing soft amber and rose. They drifted in slow spirals, and where they passed, the water below took on their colours and rippled outward in rings. Nyx stepped out of the shadow of a rock, drawn to the light. Their violet eyes brightened to match the water's shimmer. "There are souls in that pool," they murmured. "Old ones. They are sleeping and dreaming of being remembered." Rory looked. At first she saw only reflections, the sky, the moths, her own pale face. Then the surface shifted, and beneath it she glimpsed faces, dozens of them, upturned and serene, lips moving around names she could not hear. She took a breath and forced herself to let it out slowly. The pendant throbbed again, hard enough that she winced. "Isolde," she said quietly. "Why does my necklace want to go that way?" The Seer turned, her lavender eyes catching the glow of the moths. She pointed past the pool, to where the grove's far side fell away into a dark cleft between two blackened trees. Heat rose from it in a shimmer, and the air there smelled of cinnamon and smoke and something sweeter underneath. "Because you already belong to the path that leads there," Isolde said. "Shall we see where it goes?"
