You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The deer scattered before the dusk did. Rory watched a dozen pale rumps bob away through the bracken, and a prickle climbed the back of her neck. Richmond Park at this hour belonged to joggers and the odd fox. Tonight it belonged to something older. "Don't touch the stones," Isolde said. She did not look back to see whether they obeyed. The Seer walked ahead, silver hair loose to her waist, and the grass bent beneath her boots without springing back. Rory stopped and stared at the flattened blades. Then she stared at the damp earth where Isolde's footprints should have pressed deep. Nothing. The ground stayed smooth as a made bed. "She does that on purpose," Rory muttered. Nyx drifted at her left shoulder, a column of shadow with height and edges, though the streetlamps on Sheen Gate Road were a distant smear through the trees. Their violet eyes flickered like embers under dark water. The voice came slow, like wind combing through dry leaves. "She does it because she has no reason not to." "Is that supposed to comfort me?" "It is an observation." The oaks rose ahead, a ring of them, and Rory understood the word *standing stones* had been a lie of omission. These were trees. Ancient ones, their trunks coaxed upright and split by centuries of weather, bark grey and furrowed like the skin of an old hand. Some still held green leaves against the November sky. Others had been struck by lightning and left hollow, their charred insides gaping at the ground. The gap between the two nearest them was barely wider than a doorway. Isolde stepped through without breaking stride. Her shape wavered, then thinned, and was gone. Rory's ears popped. It felt like the lift in the Gherkin, that sudden drop in the stomach and the pressure pushing against the eardrums, only it did not stop. The air grew heavy and sweet. Her wrist itched over the crescent scar, a dull, insistent tingle she had not felt since childhood. Then the pendant warmed against her sternum. She pulled the silver chain free. The crimson stone glowed from within, a steady pulse like a heartbeat held in the palm of a hand. Two days ago it had sat cold beneath her shirt, a gift from a benefactor who had never signed a name. "It's warm," she said. "Then something on the far side of the Veil is hungry," Isolde's voice drifted back from between the trunks. "Or something on this side has noticed you. Come through, Aurora Carter. The grove does not wait, though it is patient." Rory tucked the pendant away and ducked between the oaks. The grove opened around her like a held breath released. Wildflowers covered the ground in drifts: foxgloves and bluebells, poppies and sweet clover, a riot of colour that had no business blooming in November. Bees hummed among them. Bees, in November. Overhead, no moon hung in the sky, yet the light poured down silver-gold and even, falling from nowhere in particular and touching everything at once. Her shadow stretched across the petals, then faded, then stretched again, out of rhythm with her steps. Nyx's shadow did not fade. It pooled at their feet and held its shape. Somewhere beyond the trees, a bell rang. Then another, further away, and another after that, the notes falling into a chime that never quite resolved. Rory pulled out her phone. The screen read 18:14. She blinked, and it read 18:14 still, but the seconds ticked backwards. She turned it over in her palm. The glass fogged. "Don't bother with that," Isolde said. She had reached a shallow dip in the land where the flowers thinned into moss. "Time here keeps its own accounts. An hour can cost you a minute or a week, depending on what you bring with you when you leave." "Helpful," Rory said. "It is true. I cannot lie. I can only decide what to leave out." Nyx's whisper came close. "She has been leaving things out for three hundred years." Rory slid her hand to her hip, where the Fae-forged blade hung in its sheath. The moonsilver had gone cold again, a bite of frost through the leather, though it had been comfortable against her thigh only moments before. As she crouched to look, the metal caught the golden light and threw back a thin, pale gleam, like a blade catching the reflection of a sun that had set long ago. Ahead, in the centre of the dip, lay a pool no wider than a cartwheel. Its surface was black and still. Rory leaned over the edge and saw her own face looking up at her, pale and wary, her black hair falling forward over her shoulders. Beside it, in the water, the reflection of Isolde knelt with her hands folded, her eyes open, watching. The real Isolde stood a few paces back, her head tilted, waiting for the question Rory had not yet worked out how to ask.
