You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The standing stones rose out of the bracken like the knuckles of something buried, black oak gone silver with age. Rory counted nine of them before she stopped counting. Rain had soaked through her trainers twenty minutes ago, somewhere between the Richmond gate and the bracken, and she had stopped noticing the cold in her toes when the path simply ended. Isolde walked ahead of them without looking back. Her silver hair hung loose to her waist, and it moved on no wind Rory could feel. Where her feet should have pressed the wet earth, the ground stayed unmarked. "Don't touch the stones," Isolde said. "They remember hands." "Brilliant," Rory said. "Anything else we shouldn't do?" "Breathe too deeply. The air here is older than your lungs." Nyx drifted at the edge of the group, a long figure cut from the dusk itself. Where the light from the lamp caught them, their outline flickered, and the violet glow of their eyes dimmed and brightened like a pulse. Their voice came from somewhere behind Rory's left ear, a whisper pushed along by a draught that wasn't there. "She means the place keeps what it takes," Nyx said. "Sometimes it gives back a different version." Rory shifted her rucksack higher on her shoulders. The Fae blade sat against her spine in its sheath, and even through the canvas and her jacket, it leeched heat from her skin. Always cold, Isolde had said when she pressed it into Rory's hands. Cold until it isn't. Rory had not asked what that meant. She was starting to regret the omission. The chain of the Heartstone pendant lay against her collarbone, and the stone beneath her shirt had begun to warm. Not hot. Just present, like a hand resting on her chest. "Is it supposed to do that?" she asked. Isolde stopped at the gap between the two tallest stones. "It knows the way in. You are carrying something that is listening." "That's not an answer." "No," Isolde agreed, and stepped through. Rory followed, because the alternative was standing in the rain with a half-Fae seer and a shadow who had been dead since 1643, and that suddenly seemed the less sensible choice. The air changed first. The damp, peaty smell of the park vanished, replaced by something sweet and green, like cut stems and warm honey. Then the sound went. The distant traffic on Sheen Road, the wet hush of the trees, the drip from her hair all dropped away together, leaving a silence so full it pressed against her ears. Then the sound came back, one thread at a time. Water somewhere, falling in small, patient drops. Bees, or something that hummed like bees but was too low and too slow. A bird call with three notes, repeated, and then a fourth that did not belong to any bird Rory had ever heard. She looked down and stopped walking. Wildflowers covered the ground. Foxgloves, bluebells, poppies the colour of a fresh bruise, and clusters of white blooms she couldn't name, all growing in a dense tangle that reached her knees. Some were in full flower. Others were pushing up through the petals of the ones beside them, buds opening even as she watched. It was late October. She knew that. Her phone had told her so an hour ago, and the leaves on the oaks outside had been turning brown at the edges. "Year-round," Isolde said, without turning. "The flowers do not know the calendar. They only know the light, and the light here belongs to no season." The light was strange. It came from nowhere in particular, a warm amber haze that hung at the height of the trees and did not cast shadows as it should. Rory glanced down at her own feet. Her shadow was there, but thin, as though the light had decided it was not worth bothering with. Nyx drifted closer to her, and when Rory looked at them, she saw that their edges had softened into the amber. Their shadow pooled on the grass in a way that looked deliberate, almost curious, stretching toward the bluebells and then drawing back. "It's tasting you," Nyx said quietly. "Shadows always know when something is new to them." "Lovely." They walked on. The path, if it was a path, wound between trunks of enormous age. Each oak bore carvings in its bark, spirals and interlocking lines that Rory's eyes kept sliding off, as if the patterns were designed to resist being read. Some of the carvings were fresh. Sap still beaded in the grooves. Rory stopped beside one, careful not to touch. "Who's doing this?" "Everyone who came before you," Isolde said. "And a few who never left." The pendant pulsed against her skin, harder this time, and Rory pressed a hand over it without meaning to. Ahead, the trees thinned, and through their trunks she caught a glimpse of a pool, perfectly still, its surface holding a sky that was not the sky above them. Deep red clouds turned slowly over it, and in the reflection, something tall and shapeless moved between them and was gone. Rory's grip tightened on the strap of her rucksack. She did not look away from the water. "Isolde," she said. "What's in the pool?" Isolde stopped. For the first time since they had stepped through the stones, she turned around, and her pale lavender eyes met Rory's with an expression that was almost apologetic. "Something that is also looking at you," she said.
