You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The standing stones rose out of the bracken like the knuckles of some buried giant, six of them, each taller than a man and furred with pale lichen. Aurora Carter stopped at the boundary and waited for her eyes to adjust. Behind her, the ordinary Richmond evening hung over the park: dog walkers' voices, the hiss of tyres on the distant road, a jogger's breath. Ahead, the light had gone the color of weak honey, though the sun had set over Kingston twenty minutes ago. "Don't step over the line yet," Isolde said. The Seer walked at the edge of the stones without seeming to move, her silver hair lifting in a wind Rory couldn't feel. Rory had stopped looking for her footprints in the mud. There were none. "The grove is patient, but it is not forgiving of impatience." "Helpful," Rory muttered. "Truthful," Isolde said serenely. "Helpfulness is a separate matter." Nyx said nothing. They had already slid halfway into the shadow cast by the nearest stone, and the outline of their body rippled like heat over tarmac. Only the faint violet glow of their eyes marked where they were. When they spoke, the voice came from everywhere and nowhere, like a whisper carried on a wind that had not yet arrived. "The air tastes of old rain. The Veil is thin here. Thin as a wet paper lantern." Rory could see it too, if she let her gaze go soft. A faint shimmer hung between the stones, like the air above a summer road, and when she looked straight at it, it slid away. She had seen it only once before, in a dark kitchen above Silas' bar, and she had told herself then that she had imagined it. She touched the silver chain at her throat. The Heartstone pendant was warm against her collarbone, warm in a way that had nothing to do with her skin. It had been growing warmer since they left the car park, a slow pulse like a second heartbeat. Hel was close. She didn't want to think about how she knew that. "Ready?" she asked. "No one is ever ready," Isolde said. "Walk anyway." Rory stepped between two stones. The cold hit first, then the silence. It was not the silence of an empty place but the silence of a held breath, deep and enormous. The bracken gave way to grass so fine and green it looked painted, and the grass was threaded with wildflowers: foxglove and harebell, white campion, yellow tormentil, blooms that should have been dead in February and were not. Bees moved among them, slow and heavy, humming a note Rory felt in her molars. "The flowers," she said quietly. "It's winter." "It is always the season that is needed," Isolde replied. "Here, the year folds in on itself like a letter. You will find it hard to say how long you have been walking. Do not trust your watch." Rory glanced at her wrist. The second hand was frozen, then jerked forward twice and stopped again. She swore under her breath and tucked her hand into her coat. The grove opened around them. Trees stood in a ring, oaks so old their trunks had split into separate columns, each one grown around a standing stone as if the wood had tried to swallow it and given up. Their branches met overhead in a roof of dark, glossy leaves. Between them, light drifted: small pale sparks that rose from the grass, hovered, and sank again, like embers thrown from a fire that wasn't there. "Are those—" Rory began. "Lantern-moths," Isolde said. "Or the souls of those who fell asleep in the grass a long time ago. It is difficult to tell, and they do not like to be asked." Rory didn't ask. They walked on. The grass sloped down toward a pool so still that it reflected the canopy perfectly, leaves and sky and all, except that the sky in the water was the wrong color: a deep, bruised violet with a single pale star. Rory crouched at the edge. Her reflection looked back at her, pale and tired, her black hair stuck to her cheek. Then the reflection blinked a half-second after she did. She stood up very fast. Nyx had drifted to the water's edge. Their shadow lay across the pool and did not lie flat on the surface, but rose a little, bending toward the glowing star as though it were something to be worshipped. "The water remembers everything that has touched it," Nyx whispered. "Do not lean too far. It is hungry for company." On the far side of the pool, a low wall of grey stone ran into the earth, carved with symbols Rory half recognised: spirals, a broken crown, a shape like a open hand with an eye in its palm. Some of the carvings had been worn smooth by centuries of rain, others looked freshly cut. She reached out and touched one. The stone was cold, but the cold was wrong, dense and deliberate, like metal left in a freezer. Beneath her fingertips she felt a faint tremor, slow and steady, like something sleeping. Her blade shifted against her hip. She had not drawn it, but the Fae-forged dagger was humming against its sheath, and when she looked down, the moonsilver was faintly luminous, though there was no moon overhead, only that bruised, unnatural sky. "Isolde," she said. "Why is the knife glowing?" The Seer turned, her lavender eyes unreadable. "Because something beneath us has noticed that you are carrying a piece of the wrong realm," she said, "and something above us has noticed that you are carrying a sword. Neither of them is pleased. Both of them are curious." "That's not an answer." "No," Isolde agreed. "It is a true sentence arranged in an unkind order. That is the best I can do with the grove's hospitality." The pendant pulsed against Rory's chest, hot now, almost painful. Somewhere beyond the trees, low and far away, a sound began: a deep, hollow tolling, like a bell struck under water. The sparks above the grass rose all at once, a thousand small lights lifting toward the canopy, and the wildflowers bowed in the sudden wind. Rory's breath came short. Beside her, Nyx's shadow stretched toward the sound, and their violet eyes flared. "Walk," Isolde said softly. "Quickly, now. The grove has finally decided to show you its heart."
