You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective arrives at a crime scene in an unusual location. Something is wrong — the evidence doesn't add up. A colleague is present, offering a different interpretation. Through careful observation and deduction, the detective begins to see what others have missed. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The platform at Camden had been dead for sixty years, and the cold that lived down there seemed to have settled into the tiles as deliberately as dust. Harlow Quinn stepped off the last stair and let her eyes adjust. Work lamps threw hard white light across the curved walls, where someone had long ago painted station names in a cream that had yellowed to the colour of old teeth. Somewhere beyond the tunnel mouth, water dripped at an irregular rhythm, like a clock that had forgotten how to keep time. "Ma'am." Detective Constable Tom Ashby ducked under the cordon tape and came toward her, notebook already open. He was young, eager, and had the sort of face that had never once been told no by a crime scene. "Body's by the old ticket hall. Uniform found him at half five. No ID on him." "Cause?" "Looks like an overdose. Heroin, probably. There's a kit by his hand." He glanced back toward the platform. "Honestly, ma'am, it's the usual. Some lad wanders down here to get off his face in a place nobody's going to find him, and he doesn't come back up." Quinn said nothing. She walked the length of the platform with her hands clasped behind her back, the way she had walked the length of a hundred crime scenes across eighteen years, and she let the place speak before she answered it. The body lay on its side against a pillar, one arm folded beneath it, the other stretched toward the rails as though reaching for something that had rolled away. The man was perhaps thirty. Expensive coat, cheap trainers. A syringe rested in a foil wrapper beside his fingers, neatly placed, its cap still on. She crouched at a distance and studied him for a long moment. "Where's the tourniquet?" she asked. Ashby frowned. "Sorry?" "Anyone injecting heroin in a hurry uses a tourniquet, or at least the belt, or a sleeve, something tied off. There's nothing on his arm. No marks at the crook of the elbow that I can see from here. And the cap's still on the needle." She looked at the foil. "Who opens a packet, takes out a syringe, and never gets as far as the cap?" "Maybe he didn't get that far. Maybe he just sat down and..." Ashby trailed off, uncertain. "Maybe." Quinn rose and stepped closer, careful of the chalk lines. The air smelled of damp stone and something else, something sharp and faintly metallic, like a struck match held too long. "Look at the floor." Ashby looked. Then he looked again, his torch wavering across the grime. "There's no blood." "Not a drop. Dead men don't bleed much, but a man who collapses in a tunnel with a head wound usually leaves something behind. Scrapes. Smears on the tiles where he dragged himself. There's nothing. It's as if he was placed here, and placed very carefully." She reached into her coat pocket and pulled on a pair of nitrile gloves, snapping them tight at the wrist. The leather strap of her watch slid against her skin as she moved. Her father had given her that watch the day she passed out of training, and she had worn it every day since, through the funerals and the commendations and the three long years since DS Morris had walked into a locked room in Hackney and never walked out again. The officers who'd searched that room had found nothing but a cold draught and a dead man's sketchbook full of symbols nobody could read. Quinn did not think about that now. She thought about the dead man's left hand. It was curled loosely, and in it, half hidden by the fold of his fingers, was a small disc of yellowed bone, drilled through the centre and threaded on a length of black cord. She crouched again and took a photograph with her phone, then a second, angling the light. "What's that?" Ashby asked. "A token of some kind." She did not touch it. "Someone gave him a ticket to get in." "To get into what, ma'am? It's a disused station." She didn't answer. Instead she turned her attention to the tiles at the far end of the platform, where a faint pattern had been scrubbed into the dust. Concentric arcs, broken by a line that ran straight toward the tunnel mouth. Whoever had made it had worked quickly, but not carelessly. The lines were too even for a child's game, too deliberate for vandalism. Something on the lower edge of the pattern caught her eye. A small object, lying in the grime near the pillar's base, half sunk in a film of wet dust. She crouched, drew a plastic evidence bag from her inside pocket, and used a pen to lift it free. A compass. Small, no bigger than a pocket watch, its brass casing gone green at the seams with verdigris. The face was etched all over with tiny symbols, a ring of protective marks she recognised from nothing and yet felt she should. The needle was not still. It swung in lazy, uncertain arcs, drifting toward the tunnel mouth, then back toward the body, then toward the tunnel again, as though it could not decide which way to be afraid. Ashby leaned in, squinting. "Is that a compass?" "It's pointing at something," Quinn said quietly. "At what?" "I don't know yet." She turned the compass in the evidence bag, watching the needle settle, then swing again. The dead man's sleeves were dry. His shoes were clean at the soles, though the floor was wet. He had not walked down here. He had been carried, or brought, and laid in the place where the lamp light fell best, with the compass dropped beside him as though it had been the thing he was looking for, and had found. "Get me the coroner," she said. "And I want the CCTV from the entrance on Chalk Farm Road, not the summary, the raw footage. Every camera from midnight onward." "Ma'am, the overdose theory..." "Is wrong." She stood, and the cold seemed to follow her up from the tiles. Her gaze went back to the faded station names on the walls, and then to the dark mouth of the tunnel, where the water kept dripping its uneven count. "He didn't die here, Tom. Somebody wanted us to think he did, and they did it badly enough that I'm not sure they meant to be caught." Behind her, the compass gave one hard, final shudder inside its evidence bag, and the needle stopped dead, pointing straight down the tunnel into the dark.
