You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The standing stones rose out of the bracken like knuckles of some buried giant, black with age and furred with lichen the colour of weak tea. Rory counted them without meaning to. Nine. Each one leaned a little, as if listening to the others. "Nine," she said. "You didn't mention nine." Isolde stepped between the two nearest stones and did not pause. Her silver hair slid down her back to her waist, catching the last of the sunset, and her pale lavender eyes swept over the ground ahead before she spoke. "I did not mention the number because you did not ask for it. The stones keep their own counting." Rory glanced down at the dew-heavy grass behind the older woman. It lay flat and unbroken, silver with moisture, not a single crushed blade to show where Isolde had walked. Rory's own boots left dark prints with every step. She tightened her jaw and kept moving. Nyx drifted at the edge of her vision, a tall stretch of shadow that had come up from the root-tangled hollow beneath the oaks. The shade was not so much walking as the dusk itself was rearranging around them. When the light caught the figure, it flattened into a silhouette against the stone. When it did not, Nyx was simply there, two faint violet points burning where a face should be. "Your pendant," Nyx whispered. The voice came like wind through a half-open window, and Rory felt it more than heard it. "Is it still warm?" Rory pressed two fingers against the hollow of her throat. Beneath her shirt the Heartstone sat on its silver chain, and the crimson stone had gone from cool to a slow, steady heat, like a coal someone had tucked against her skin. It had been quiet for weeks in her flat above Silas' bar. It had woken the moment they crossed the boundary. "It's warm," she said. "Not hot. Warm, like it's listening." "Listening to what?" Nyx asked. "Well, that's the question, isn't it." Rory let her hand drop. "A Hel portal, or something that wants to be one. You said it pulses near them. So either we're close to a tear, or there's a tear here I didn't know about." Isolde stopped beneath the largest of the oaks. The branches overhead had grown into a dense canopy, but between the leaves the sky had lost its colour entirely. Rory looked up and saw no dusk, no stars, only a pale and shifting grey, like the inside of a shell. "There is a tear," Isolde said, "and there is also a question of which side of it you stand on." "That's not an answer." "It is the only honest one I have, and I cannot lie." The seer turned, and her lavender gaze settled on Rory's wrist, on the small crescent-shaped scar. "You will find that the truth is seldom shaped the way you wish it were." Rory opened her mouth to argue, then closed it. The air had changed. It tasted of cut grass and cold iron, and beneath that something sweeter, like honey left too long in the sun. The wildflowers at the foot of the oak were blooming. Foxgloves and harebells, buttercups and a scatter of white stars she could not name, all open at once, though the calendar in her head said early October. She knelt and touched one of the buttercups. Its petals were warm, and when she lifted her hand a bead of pollen clung to her fingertip and refused to fall. "Year-round," Nyx murmured. "The Grove never lets anything sleep." Rory stood and brushed her palm against her jeans. Her other hand had found the hilt at her hip beneath her coat, the Fae blade sliding half out of its sheath. Even through the leather, the moonsilver was cold enough to ache in her knuckles. Above them, the grey sky had begun to thin, and a pale wash of light was seeping down through the leaves. It was not moonlight. Not yet. But the blade reacted to it anyway, the slender leaf-shaped steel brightening in a faint and watery gleam. "Keep that out," Isolde said without looking back. "The Grove will mistake you for a threat, and it has been waiting a long time for someone to make that mistake." Rory drew the blade the rest of the way and held it low, point angled away from the ground. "Good to know." They walked on. The trees thinned and the path, if there had ever been a path, dissolved into moss so deep it swallowed the sound of their steps. Somewhere ahead water was running, though Rory could see no stream. Instead of birdsong there came a low humming, tuneless and patient, like a crowd murmuring behind a closed door. Nyx paused beside a hollow stump and pressed one long shadowed hand against its bark. The violet eyes flared. "There are doors here," they whispered. "Dozens. Old ones. Some of them are open, and the rooms behind them have been waiting for us to notice." "Which rooms?" Rory asked. "The ones that remember who was here first." Rory's pendant pulsed against her breastbone, hard enough that she felt it in her teeth. She stopped and turned in a slow circle. The trees had drawn back to reveal a clearing she had not seen approaching, a ring of pale grey stones half-sunk in the earth, and in the centre of them the air hung like heat rising off tarmac. Through that shimmer, a faint distortion ran across the clearing like ripples on a pond, and when she blinked it seemed to fold in on itself. "The Veil," Isolde said quietly. "You are seeing it properly now." "It's thinner than I expected," Rory said. "It is thinner here. It was never meant to be thin here." Isolde stepped forward, and the blade in Rory's hand gave a single sharp chime, like a glass struck with a fingernail. The seer's bare feet touched the grass inside the ring and left no mark. "Come, Aurora. Whatever is singing in this place has noticed us, and it is deciding whether to be pleased." Rory tightened her grip on the hilt, felt the pendant burn steadier against her skin, and stepped across the threshold.
