You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective arrives at a crime scene in an unusual location. Something is wrong — the evidence doesn't add up. A colleague is present, offering a different interpretation. Through careful observation and deduction, the detective begins to see what others have missed. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The stairwell down from Camden Road had been sealed for a decade, and someone had cut the padlock with a clean hand. Harlow Quinn noticed that before she noticed the smell. Bolt cutters left a ragged mouth in steel. This was a neat bite, the kind a locksmith would make, or someone who had been taught how. "Ma'am." Detective Inspector Owen Pryce stood at the bottom of the steps, lit from below by a uniformed officer's torch. He was a big, soft-voiced man with a habit of rubbing his thumb along his jaw. "You'll want to see this before the lads start tramping." "Who called it in?" "A cleaner for the council. Says she came down for a look at the water damage and found him sitting against the wall like he'd nodded off." Pryce gestured with his notebook. "Dead maybe six hours. No ID. Dealer, I'd say. Look at his arms." Quinn stepped off the last stair and the platform opened around her. Old Edwardian tile, cream and green, the station name still visible in faded mosaic. The rails beyond the platform edge were furred with rust and something paler, a crust that caught the torchlight like frost. The air was cold in a way the tunnel should not have been, a dry cold that stiffened the skin of her knuckles. The body sat with its back to a pillar. A man in his thirties, good wool coat, expensive trainers. His eyes were open. His face had the grey, slack look she had seen on too many corpses, and no visible wounds at all. "No blood," she said. "Overdose, then. Or a dose someone cut badly." Pryce crouched beside her. "We've had three of these in Camden this year. Stuff comes in from the continent, laced with God knows what." "Three of these," Quinn repeated. She did not look at him. She was looking at the floor. Dust lay across the platform in a soft grey blanket, the kind that accumulated for decades undisturbed. Across it ran a trail of prints. Two sets. One pair from the cleaner's sensible boots, coming from the stairs and stopping short by the pillar. The other pair, fresh, long-toed, belonging to the dead man, came from the far end of the platform where the tiles had cracked. They walked toward the body. They did not walk away from it. "He walked down here," she said. "Under his own power." "Well, yes." "And then he sat down against the pillar, very neatly, with his hands folded in his lap." She pointed without touching. "Look at the dust on the wall behind him. There's a clean outline where his shoulders rested. He didn't slump. Someone arranged him." Pryce grunted. "Or he sat like a gentleman. Some of them are very particular at the end." Quinn let that pass. She stood and moved along the platform, slow and careful, the way she had once walked a grid in the Hindu Kush with her rifle at the low ready. Eighteen years on the Met had taught her that the body lied more often than the scene did, and the scene lied only when someone had cleaned it. This scene had been cleaned. Not well enough. At the cracked tiles, something gleamed in a fissure. She knelt, drew a glove from her pocket, and lifted it out. A small brass compass, no bigger than a pocket watch, its lid engraved with a ring of tight, looping symbols. Verdigris crusted the hinge. The needle was not still. It trembled, and then swung slowly, deliberately, toward the far wall, where the tunnel mouth yawned black and dead. She had seen a compass like this once before. Not in an evidence room. In a file photograph, three years ago, pinned beside a photograph of a man she had trained and trusted, a man who had walked into a locked flat on Hackney Road and come out of it as nothing she could account for. DS Morris's notebook had been found on the kitchen table, open to a page covered in a drawing of this same ring of symbols. Her pulse did not change. She had trained it not to. "Owen," she said. "Who else has access to this station?" "Nobody. It's been dead since the eighties. Council sealed it. They're going to put flats on top of it, God help us." "Then how did a man in a Savile Row coat get down here with his trainers spotless and his hands clean, and sit down in a dust-free patch of the wall?" She turned the compass over in her gloved palm. "And why is this pointing at a tunnel that, according to every map, should be solid brick?" Pryce looked at the compass, then at her, and his face shifted in a way she did not like. Something guarded. "Ma'am, I think we should keep to the drugs line. The lab will have tox in forty-eight hours." "The lab will tell us what he took. It won't tell us why the dust is wrong." She straightened, pressed the compass into an evidence bag, and sealed it. Her left wrist brushed the worn leather of her watch strap, a habit that steadied her when a case started to tilt. The second hand was moving. The hour hand said nearly four in the morning. The dead man's wrist, she noticed then, bore a watch of his own, expensive and gold, and its face had stopped at 3:12. Somewhere down the dark tunnel, a faint metallic chime rang out, like a bone token dropped on stone. Pryce heard it too. He did not move. "Get the photographer," Quinn said quietly. "And nobody walks past that pillar until I say so."
