You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The platform smelled of wet brick and something sweeter underneath, like lilies left too long in a vase. Harlow Quinn stopped at the bottom of the stairwell and let her eyes adjust to the sodium glow leaking through the grating overhead. Somebody had strung up work lamps along the tunnel mouth, and their cables snaked across the tiles like veins. Beyond them the abandoned Camden platform stretched into darkness, its advertising hoardings peeling away in long curls, the ghost of a 1970s cigarette ad still smiling from behind the grime. "Before you say anything, I know," said DI Tom Hale, picking his way toward her over the cables. He had a coffee in one hand and a paper evidence bag in the other, and he held both like they might bite. "Nobody brings a body down here on purpose. Station's been sealed since 1984." "Then how did he get down here?" "That's the question of the week, isn't it." Quinn crouched beside the body without touching the cordon. The man lay on his back in the middle of the platform, arms loose, one shoe missing. Early forties, maybe, in a good wool coat that had been expensive once. His face had gone the grey-blue of old putty, and his lips were stained dark at the edges. Frost furred the inside of his collar. She looked at the frost for a long moment. "Go on," Hale said. "Tell me it's a heart attack." "It isn't a heart attack." "Exposure, then. He wandered in pissed and froze." "In July? With the tunnel sitting at fifteen degrees?" Quinn tilted her head toward the man's throat. "Frost doesn't form from the outside in a warm room. It forms from the body out. Something cold got into him before he died." Hale sighed through his nose and sipped his coffee. "The lab can run it. Overdose is the working theory. Look at his mouth. Look at the pupils. Somebody's been selling something nasty in the clubs on Chalk Farm Road and this bloke bought the bad batch." Quinn studied the mouth. Dark staining, yes. But the stain ran in a neat line along the lower lip and stopped precisely at the corners, as if someone had painted it on and then wiped it clean at the edges. Drugs left a mess. This looked like ink, or berry juice, or something she didn't have a word for yet. She glanced at his left wrist. A gold watch, its face cracked, the hands stopped at 3:17. "What time did the call come in?" "Quarter past four this morning. Night-shift lad from the council was checking the grates after the storm and saw a light down here. Light's gone now, mind." "Light." "Torch, he reckoned. Or a lantern. Thought it was kids." Quinn stood and looked along the platform. The dust on the tiles was thick, grey, undisturbed for decades. Hale's team had left a trail of boot prints from the stairs to the body, neat and overlapping. Beyond the cordon, though, the dust held a single line of prints that went out toward the far end of the platform and simply stopped, halfway between two pillars, as if the walker had stepped off the world. "Who made those?" she asked. Hale followed her gaze and frowned. "Ours, probably. Lad with the torch, maybe." "Your lad didn't walk past the cordon in his boots, Tom. Those are bare feet." She stepped closer, careful of the cables, and crouched over the prints. Narrow heels, long toes, pressed so lightly the dust had barely shifted. "And they don't come back." "So he walked to the end and went up the other way. There's a service shaft behind the pillars." "Is there?" Hale didn't answer right away. He lifted his lamp and swung the beam toward the pillars, and the light revealed the bricks behind them, solid and sooty, with no shaft and no door, only a rectangle of newer mortar where something had once been bricked up and then, presumably, made to look as though it had never been there at all. Quinn's left hand drifted to her wrist, where the worn leather of her watch strap sat snug against the bone. She pressed her thumb against the buckle, a habit she'd never managed to break since the night Morris went into the dark and came out wrong, and she made herself keep looking. "You want to tell me what that is," Hale said. "No." She pointed at the mortar. "I want to know who laid it, and why it's still fresh enough to have a fingerprint in it." She knelt, pulled a glove from her coat pocket, and worked it over her fingers. The surface of the mortar bore a faint, rounded impression, the size of a palm. Beside it, pressed into the grime on the brick, someone had drawn a small symbol with the tip of something sharp. Three concentric circles, broken at the top. Hale leaned in. "Graffiti." "Careful work for graffiti." She took out her phone and photographed it from three angles. Then she noticed something caught in the seam of the brickwork, a scrap of cloth no bigger than a fingernail, dark green, threaded with silver. She eased it free with tweezers from her pocket. Silk, or something finer. It smelled faintly of cedar and burnt sugar. "Tom." "Mm?" "Your dead man has a watch that stopped at 3:17, frost on a warm body, a trail that leads nowhere, and a wall nobody's supposed to have built." She held the scrap up to the lamplight and watched the silver thread catch the glow. "Nobody walks down here by accident, and nobody leaves without a door. So either he was carried in by someone who knows how to make a wall vanish, or he came here on his own feet, looking for something on the other side of it." Hale's coffee had gone cold in his hand. He didn't drink it. "You've got a look on your face, Harlow." "I've had it for three years," she said quietly, and she turned back toward the bricks.
