You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective arrives at a crime scene in an unusual location. Something is wrong — the evidence doesn't add up. A colleague is present, offering a different interpretation. Through careful observation and deduction, the detective begins to see what others have missed. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The Camden platform had been dead for sixty years, and it still smelled like it. Harlow Quinn stepped down from the last rung of the maintenance ladder and let her eyes adjust to the sodium glare of the work lamps. Wet brick. Old copper. Something sweeter underneath, like lilies left too long in a vase. "Mind the third step, Ma'am," said Sergeant Dennis Hale from somewhere up the tunnel. "Someone's already gone through it." She minded it. The tiles had buckled in a curved line, as though the floor had been pressed from below, and the cracks were rimed with frost. Frost, in a tunnel where the air sat at a steady, sticky sixty-one degrees. Quinn noted it, then noted that Hale had not. The body lay at the foot of a tiled wall, where the old advertisements had long since bled into the grime. A man in his fifties, expensive charcoal overcoat, hands open at his sides, palms up. His eyes were half lidded and fixed on the vaulted ceiling. There were no wounds that she could see. No blood, no bruising at the throat, no torn cloth. "Overdose," Hale said, coming up beside her with his notebook already open. He was thirty-two, sandy-haired, and had the eager, slightly sweaty look of a man who wanted a case to be simple. "Lad's a regular on the Camden end, we think. Dealer's been shifting something new. Ours aren't the first we've had with that look on their faces." "Which look is that?" "Like they've seen something they wanted." He shrugged. "Doctor's been and gone. Said cardiac arrest, probably. Toxicology will tell us the rest." Quinn crouched beside the body. The dead man's left wrist was bare, but the skin beneath the cuff showed a pale band where a watch had been. She looked at her own worn leather strap, the one she had not taken off in three years, and then made herself look away from it. "Who found him?" "Urban explorer. Two of them, actually, filming for a channel. They came down through the Hampstead Road shaft, got a fright, and rang it in." Hale flipped a page. "Shaft's sealed now. Grille's rusted solid. Nobody's been in or out since last night, so whatever he took, he took down here on his own." "Did he walk in?" "Obviously he walked in." "Then show me his prints." Hale hesitated, then took out his torch and swept it across the dust that covered the platform. The grime lay thick and grey, undisturbed except for the scuffs of the explorers and the ladder team. A single line of footprints ran from the ladder toward the body. They were neat, the heel-and-toe pattern of a man who had stepped carefully over the cracked tiles. "There," Hale said. "Him." Quinn stood and walked the length of the track bed, slowly, looking at the ground rather than at the body. The dust ran unbroken to the foot of the far wall. There was no return path. No second set of prints beside his. No drag marks, no disturbed grit where a man might have stumbled or turned back. "Sergeant," she said, "his shoes are dry." "It's a dry tunnel." "The tiles are wet under the frost. Look at the cuffs of his trousers." She pointed. The charcoal wool was dark with damp to the knee, and beaded with condensation. "He walked through water. Yet the footprints are dry, and the dust doesn't show the dampness of a wet sole. Either he walked in before the water came, or he didn't walk in at all." Hale opened his mouth and closed it again. Quinn crouched by the wall. Someone had scratched a sigil into the tile, close to the dead man's hand. Four concentric arcs with a short bar through the centre, cut deep and rounded at the edges, as if worn by time, or made by something with more patience than a knife. Beside it lay a small disc of yellowed bone, drilled through and strung on a cord of black thread. The cord had been snapped. "Bag that," she said. "Ma'am, it's probably a charm. Half the lads down the Market carry—" "Bag it." He did. Quinn leaned in further, careful not to touch anything. Near the dead man's right foot, half buried in the grime, lay a small brass compass. Its face was crowded with tiny etched symbols, most of them obscured by a bloom of verdigris. The needle was not resting. It trembled, swung in a slow arc, then came to rest pointing firmly at the crack in the tiles where the frost ran thickest. Hale followed her gaze and laughed, too loudly. "Lovely. Antique shop, that. Tourist tat." "Is it?" Quinn said quietly. The needle held steady, unmoving, as though the crack were drawing it. She had seen a compass do that once before, three years ago, on a case that had ended with DS Morris lying in a stairwell in Walthamstow, his eyes open, his face calm, and his notebook filled with the same arcs. The official report called it a heart attack. The coroner had called it impossible. The file had been closed in a week. "Get the compass bagged," she said. "Separately from the bone. And Sergeant, I want the shaft sealed properly and a constable on it until I say otherwise." "Guv, the grille's rusted—" "Then it's been opened from the inside recently enough that the rust has been scraped." She turned back to the wall, to the dead man with his palms open to the ceiling, as if he had been waiting for something to fall into them. "Look at his hands. He wasn't surprised. He came here knowing exactly where he was going." Hale looked at the hands. For the first time that night, he said nothing at all. Quinn pulled off her glove, flexed her stiff fingers, and let her gaze travel back along the dusty track to the ladder, where no one had climbed down in hours, and where the dust lay as smooth and unbroken as a held breath.
