You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The oaks at the edge of Richmond Park had been ordinary a minute ago. Rory was sure of that. She had walked past them on the gravel path with her hood up and her breath clouding, the same as every other winter morning she'd spent running deliveries for Yu-Fei's restaurant. Then Isolde had stopped between two trunks, lifted one pale hand, and said, "Here the path forgets itself," and the trees had leaned apart like curtains. Now the stones stood in a ring, grey and furred with lichen, each one taller than Rory and carved with spirals that seemed to slide when she didn't look straight at them. "Don't touch the stones," Isolde said without turning around. She walked ahead of them, silver hair falling to her waist, and the grass beneath her did not bend. Rory watched for it, and it was true. Where Isolde's feet should have pressed the turf, there was only turf, springing straight back. Nyx moved along the shadow the stones threw across the clearing. The Shade's outline rippled as they went, thinning where the light struck and thickening where it did not, so that for a moment their voice seemed to come from the dark beneath the nearest stone. "You're nervous," Nyx whispered. The voice carried like wind through dry leaves. "Your pulse is quick." "I'm standing in a fairy ring," Rory said. "Forgive me for being nervous." "Fae," Isolde corrected mildly. "The rings are older than the word for them." Rory's left wrist tingled over the small crescent scar. Beneath her coat, the Heartstone pendant lay warm against her breastbone. It had been warm since they'd left the car, a faint, steady heat like a hand resting over her heart. She had told herself it was body heat. Now, as they crossed the threshold between the last two stones, the warmth flared once, sharp as a struck match, then settled into a slow, uneasy throb. She pressed her palm to her chest. "Isolde." "Yes." The seer did not look back. "The pendant's reacting to something." "It remembers Dymas," Isolde said. "Every ember in it does. It has been close to a gate of the Hel realms and it has not forgotten the heat." She paused at the edge of the clearing. "Do not worry about the warmth. Worry about the moment it stops." "That's not comforting." "It was not meant to be comforting. It was meant to be true." The corner of her mouth lifted. "I cannot lie, Aurora. You will find that inconvenient, but I think you will come to appreciate it." Then the clearing opened, and Rory forgot to be afraid. Wildflowers grew everywhere, in the grass, in the cracks between flat grey rocks, climbing the trunks of silver birches that Rory was certain had not been there a moment before. Foxglove and bluebells sat beside primroses and late roses, all blooming at once, as though spring and summer and autumn had been folded together and pressed flat. Their scent was thick and sweet and faintly green. Bees moved through them, lazy and gold, and beyond the flowers a stream ran over stones without a sound she could hear. She could see the water catching light. She could not hear it at all. "It's quiet," she said. "Listen harder," Nyx whispered. She did. Beneath the silence there was a murmur, very faint, like a crowd in a distant room. Words came and went in it, half-formed, in languages she almost recognised. A laugh, thin as a thread. Somewhere a bell, rung once and not again. "Are they talking about us?" she asked. "Everything here talks about everything," Isolde said. "Mostly they are talking about the time they have lost." Rory glanced at her. "Lost?" "The grove keeps its own clock." Isolde reached out and touched a birch leaf. It shivered under her fingers and turned, very slowly, from green to gold and back to green. "An hour spent here can be a minute in your world. Or a week. Or a year, if you are unlucky and linger at the wrong stone. I once knew a man who sat down to rest beneath that willow and rose to find his grandsons grown and his dog long buried." She let the leaf go. "He was not unhappy. He simply had not expected to be so old." Nyx drifted closer to the willow, its long branches trailing in the water. The Shade's form thinned until Rory could see the grass through them, then gathered itself again into a tall, dim shape. "This one remembers me," Nyx said softly. "Not the willow. The ground under it. Something was buried here before the roots came." A pause. "Something I once tried to bury myself." Rory did not ask. She had learned in the last few weeks not to push Nyx toward the things they had been before they were Shade, and Nyx had learned to offer only what they chose to give. Her hand drifted to her hip, where the Fae-forged blade hung in its sheath. Isolde had given it to her with the same serene expression she used for everything, as if handing over a teacup. Now it was cold through the leather, cold as river stones in January. In the strange grey-gold light, she saw a faint luminescence cross the moonsilver of the hilt, though the sun above was bright and unbroken. "Is it always this cold?" she asked. "Always," Isolde said. "It will be colder when we are near something that should not be here. I suspect you will not enjoy the feeling." "I'm starting to hate your suspicions." "Then you are learning." They walked on, deeper among the flowers. Ahead, a low mound rose from the grass, ringed by a second circle of stones that were not grey at all but pale as bone. Between two of them, the air shimmered faintly, like heat above a road in August, and Rory understood with a cold drop of certainty that she was looking at the Veil. Not a wall, not a curtain. A thinness, stretched like a membrane across the gap. The Heartstone pulsed hard against her skin, once, twice, and the bluebells at her feet turned slowly towards it. "Rory," Nyx whispered. "Don't step closer." She stopped. Her heart hammered. Beside her, Isolde's lavender eyes had gone very still. "Well," the seer said softly. "Now we shall see what the grove has been keeping for us."
