You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The standing stones rose from the bracken like teeth in an old jaw. Rory counted nine before she gave up, because the tenth was half-swallowed by a holly bush and the eleventh stood in the middle of a path that no map of Richmond Park had ever shown. They looked like oak, split and grained, but the bark had faded to the colour of pewter, and something slow and pale had grown through the cracks. Isolde walked between them without breaking stride. Her silver hair swung behind her like poured water. Rory watched the grass where the woman's feet came down. It bent under her weight, then straightened, and the soft mud at the edge of the path held no print at all. "Don't search for my footprints," Isolde said. "You'll only find the ones you brought with you." Rory pressed her lips together. She had spent the last six hours with a half-Fae seer who answered questions with questions, and she had learned that arguing only made the answers longer. Nyx drifted at her shoulder, a tall column of living shadow that stretched across the ground where no light should have cast it. Their violet eyes flickered in the grey October gloom. When they spoke, the voice slid out like wind through dry reeds. "The stones are listening," Nyx said. "Keep your voice low." "Listening for what?" "For anyone who talks too much." Rory stepped past the holly bush and the air changed. It was not colder or warmer. It was thicker, and it tasted of rain on hot metal. The grey sky she had walked under for most of the day simply stopped. Above the clearing, a canopy of leaves the colour of brass turned slowly, and the light that filtered through them lay gold across the grass. Foxgloves grew at the base of the nearest oak. Beside them, blackberry brambles hung heavy with fruit, and a cluster of white anemones pushed through the frost-blackened ground beneath. Rory crouched and touched one of the anemones. The petals were cool and dry, and they didn't bruise under her fingertip. "It's winter outside," she said. "It's always the season of the flower here," Isolde said, without turning. "Winter and summer both knock at the gate. Neither is let in." Rory glanced at her wrist. The second hand of her watch had stopped at a quarter past four. She tapped the glass, and the hand jerked forward, then ran backward for three full ticks before it settled again. "Your watch doesn't like this place," Nyx said. Their shadow slid over the grass, folding around the roots of the oak. "Neither does your sense of direction. You've turned twice since the stones." Rory had turned twice. She didn't like admitting it, so she didn't. She straightened and rolled her shoulders, and her hand brushed the hilt at her hip. The Fae blade lay in its sheath, and even through the leather it was cold, the kind of cold that felt like water drawn from a deep well. When she slid it a finger's width out, moonsilver caught the golden light and gave back a faint, bluish glow, as if it remembered a night that had not happened yet. "Careful with that," Isolde said. "It hears its own name in these woods." "Then I'll keep it quiet." Rory slid the blade home. Beneath her shirt, the Heartstone pendant warmed against her breastbone. It was not the sharp heat of a stove or the flush of stairs climbed too fast. It was a slow, insistent pulse, the kind a sleeping animal makes against your palm. Rory pressed her hand flat over it. "Something's pulling," she said. Nyx's eyes brightened. The shadow beneath them rippled, and for a moment their silhouette thinned, as if they might slip out between the stems of the foxgloves and vanish. "Dymas," they whispered. "Or a door that opens onto it. The stone knows the heat of a Hel portal, and you wear a piece of that heat around your neck." Isolde stopped at the edge of a small hollow where the grass dipped toward a pool. The water lay perfectly still, and it reflected a sky that was not there, a wash of amber dusk with no sun in it. Rows of vines seemed to hang from the far bank, heavy with fruit that glowed like lanterns. "You'll want to look carefully," Isolde said. "The pool will show you what you ask for." Rory stepped to the water's edge and looked down. Her reflection stared back, black hair, bright blue eyes, the thin scar on her left wrist pale against her skin. Then the reflection blinked, and she didn't. Half a heartbeat later, it lifted its hand. Rory did not lift hers.
