You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The boundary stones rose out of the bracken like the ribs of something very old and very patient. Rory counted them as she passed between the first two, a habit from childhood when she had needed numbers to steady her. Eleven. Oak, gnarled and silver-barked, each one taller than a man and leaning slightly inward, as though listening. "Don't touch the bark," Isolde said without turning around. Rory's hand, which had been drifting toward the nearest trunk, stopped in the air. "I wasn't going to." "You were." The seer glided ahead along the path, silver hair moving behind her like something underwater. Rory watched her feet for the thousandth time since they'd left the car park and saw nothing but the dew-wet grass bending beneath nothing at all. No footprints. Isolde's pale lavender eyes flicked back over one shoulder. "Everyone wants to touch the first thing they're warned about. It is the way of mortals. Ask the stones how many of them have regretted it." Beside Rory, Nyx made a sound that might have been a laugh if laughter could be made of wind. The shade's silhouette rippled where it stood, six feet and two inches of living darkness that the afternoon sun simply refused to illuminate. Their violet eyes glowed faintly in the gloom under the trees. "She is delightful when she is being cryptic," they whispered. "Give her a moment. She will sound very wise about something terrible." "I heard that," said Isolde. The path opened, and Rory forgot to be wary. The clearing did not belong to the same season as the park outside. Wildflowers covered the ground in drifts of colour she had no names for. Some were blue as a gas flame, others the soft orange of apricots, and a few were the deep rose of old wine. They bloomed in thick clusters around the roots of trees that were not quite trees, their trunks spiralling upward into canopies of leaves that shimmered green and then silver as the light shifted. Somewhere a stream ran, and the sound of it seemed to come from every direction at once. The air tasted of rain and crushed mint. Rory breathed in and felt it settle in her chest, cool and clean, and then she noticed her own pulse. Her thumb moved to the silver chain at her throat. The Heartstone Pendant was warm. Not the warmth of skin, but a faint, living heat, like a coal banked under ash. It had been quiet since the flat above Silas' bar, quiet through the Tube and the bus and the walk through Richmond's damp paths. Now it pulsed against her sternum, once, twice, a slow rhythm she could feel in her teeth. "It is not a portal," Nyx murmured, reading her face. "Not yet. Only a memory of one, perhaps, or a neighbour." "Helpful," Rory said. "I am always helpful." The shade drifted closer, and where their edge brushed the grass, the blossoms closed for a heartbeat and then opened again. "Usually I am merely unhelpful in a more elegant manner." Isolde had stopped beneath the largest of the strange trees. Its roots broke the ground like the knuckles of a clenched hand, and between two of them lay a pool of water so still it held the sky perfectly, though the sky in it was a colour Rory had never seen. Not blue. Not grey. Something the colour of a held breath. "Come and look," Isolde said. "Do not look too long." Rory knelt at the edge. Her reflection stared up at her, black hair, blue eyes, the thin pale crescent on her left wrist, and for one bewildering second the face in the water did not move when she did. It only watched. Then it smiled, and she did not. She pulled back so fast she nearly fell. "That is the Grove's courtesy," Isolde said mildly. "It shows you what you might have been. Most find it flattering." "And the ones who don't?" "They stay a little longer than they meant to." The seer's mouth curved, though her eyes did not join in. "Time here is a liar, child. An hour sitting in the moss may be a handful of minutes in the park, or a week, or a winter. I can never remember which, and I have been here three hundred years." Nyx's whisper went very soft. "Aurora. Your pendant." The warmth had surged. Rory's fingers closed around the stone, and through the thin fabric of her jacket she felt it burn, steady and insistent. Far off, beyond the trunks, the light had changed. Something moved in the shadows between the trees, something with too many joints and a sound like a bell cracked underwater. Her other hand went to the sheath at her hip. The Fae blade slid free with a whisper of moonsilver, and even in the warm air of the Grove, the metal was cold enough to ache in her palm. It glowed faintly, a thin pale light in the dimness, as if it had been waiting for exactly this. "Good," said Isolde softly, and for once there was no riddle in her voice at all. "You are going to need that."
