You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The standing stones rose out of the bracken like knuckles of something buried too long ago to remember. Rory counted them without meaning to. Eleven. Lichen the colour of old bruises crawled over each one, and the oaks behind them leaned inward, as though they were listening. "Mind the gap," Isolde said. She stepped between two stones without glancing down, and her silver hair swung past the stone and was gone. Rory looked at the ground where the woman had stood. The grass there was flattened in a neat oval, and nothing else. No prints. Not even the faint dent a bare heel would leave in damp soil. "Walking on air now, is she?" Rory said. Nyx drifted beside her, a long column of shadow that the sunlight refused to touch. Their violet eyes flickered in the hollow of a shape that might have been a face. "Walking on something older than air," Nyx said. The voice came from everywhere at once, a whisper pushed along by a breeze that wasn't blowing. "You first. You're the one who can't be lost." "That's not how this works." "It's exactly how this works." Rory exhaled through her nose and stepped into the gap. The change arrived before the light did. Her ears popped, the way they did on a plane descending through cloud, and the air thickened to the texture of warm honey. Her breath came slower. Her heartbeat pulled back into a steady, deliberate rhythm. Against her sternum, the Heartstone pendant began to warm, a slow pulse like a hand pressed flat against her chest. She pressed her palm over it. Not fever. Not panic. Something else was near, something that lived on the far side of a door she had never opened. The sound returned first. Not birdsong, because there were no birds, but a rustle that moved through the trees in waves, like wind crossing a field of wheat. Then a single bell rang somewhere ahead. Its tone hung in the air long after the metal should have gone quiet. Then she saw the flowers. They grew in a carpet across the clearing, and they refused to agree on a season. Snowdrops pushed up through the roots of poppies. Foxgloves stood tall and dressed in a pale frost that glittered in a sun she could not find. Bramble flowers unfurled from a hedge still heavy with autumn berries, and at the edge of the clearing a single rose the colour of spilt wine opened as she watched. "That shouldn't be possible," she said. "Nothing here is supposed to be possible," Nyx said. "That is rather the point." Rory knelt and touched a snowdrop. Its petals were cold and dry, and when she pulled her hand away, the stem bent and straightened as if it had been waiting for her to notice it. Her fingers tingled. She rubbed them against her jeans and stood. The Fae blade at her hip pressed cold through the leather of its sheath, the way it always did, a chill that never warmed no matter how long she carried it. It had never glowed in daylight. Now a faint silver light seeped from the seam of the scabbard, though no moon hung overhead. She glanced down at it. Then at the sky. The sky was the wrong colour. Warm amber spread overhead, thick and syrupy, like sunlight filtered through a glass of wine. There was no sun to match it. The light simply lay across everything, as if the place had decided it would be bright and nothing could argue. "Isolde," Rory called. Her voice came back to her flat, swallowed by the leaves. Silver hair flickered between the trunks ahead. Isolde did not turn. "Keep to the path," she said, and her voice carried clearly through the stillness. "The path remembers the feet that walk it. The meadow does not." Rory looked down. Her own boot prints dented the grass behind her, dark and damp. Nyx's passage was only a faint cooling of the air, the hollow where the light had been swallowed. A stream crossed the path ahead. Its water ran silver and slow, and when it reached the edge of the clearing it did not flow on. It pooled into a flat mirror the size of a kitchen table, reflecting the amber sky and the twisting branches overhead. Rory caught her own face in the surface. For an instant the reflection lagged, a half-second behind her, and then it caught up with an expression she had not made. She stepped back. "Do not look too long," Isolde said. "Water here keeps what it sees." Nyx paused at the edge of the pool. Their outline rippled, thinning and thickening like smoke caught in a draught. "Then it should be careful what it chooses to see." The bell rang again, closer now. The Heartstone warmed another degree against her skin, and somewhere beyond the trees, something sweet and heavy drifted on the air, like fruit left too long in a bowl of sugar. Rory tightened her grip on the Fae blade's hilt and followed the path deeper.
