You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The standing stones rose out of the bracken like the knuckles of some buried giant, and Rory stopped at the boundary with her boots half in the Richmond autumn and half in something that was not autumn at all. The air on the far side was warm. It smelled of crushed thyme and rain on warm stone, and it hummed against her skin the way a fridge hums in an empty kitchen, low enough that she felt it in her teeth before she heard it. "Don't look for the seam," Isolde said. She had already stepped through without pausing, silver hair falling to her waist and catching a light that came from nowhere in particular. "The seam looks for you. Better to be looked at by nothing than by something." "That's not reassuring," Rory said. "It was not meant to be. Come along, Aurora Carter. The grove will not wait, and it has never once in three hundred years been in a hurry." Rory glanced back. The park behind them was ordinary: a dog walker's distant whistle, a bus grinding up the Kingston road, the grey smear of the sky over the treetops. Then she turned and the ordinary world seemed to slide a fraction to one side, like a photograph shifted on a table. A faint shimmer hung in the air at the edge of her vision, a distortion that vanished the moment she tried to look straight at it. She had seen it once before, in a Cardiff alley, and had told herself she was tired. She stepped through. The grass took her weight without a sound. It was impossibly soft, and the blades were not green so much as every shade of green at once, shifting as she moved. Wildflowers ran across the clearing in drifts: foxgloves, harebells, something with petals like folded paper and a scent like honey left in the sun. Some were open. Some were in bud. Some had gone to seed, and the seeds lifted on the faint breeze and hung in the air like tiny lanterns before drifting down again. Autumn had been Kingston's only weather for a month. Here, nothing had heard of it. Nyx was already there, though Rory had not seen them arrive. They stood at the edge of a stand of birch, a tall shape cut from a deeper dark than the shade beneath the trees. Their violet eyes glowed faintly, and when they spoke, their voice came from everywhere at once, like wind worrying the corner of a loose window. "It remembers us," Nyx whispered. "Not kindly. Not unkindly. It simply remembers." "Can you see the veil from in here?" Rory asked. "You can see it, too. You're pretending you can't." Nyx tilted their head. "Look at the sky." She did. Above the clearing, the light was pale gold, the colour of late afternoon in June, though when she'd entered, it had been grey. She pulled out her phone. The screen showed 16:42 and a date two weeks ahead, then nothing at all, then 09:15. She put it back in her pocket and didn't mention it. Isolde would only say that the hour inside could be minutes outside or days, and that the clock was a poor guide for people who had mistaken it for a map. The pendant at her throat stirred. Rory felt it before she noticed it, a small warmth pressed against her breastbone, like a hand resting there. The Heartstone had been a gift, though she had never learned who sent it. It had grown warm in Dymas-tinged places before. It had grown warm once beside a shop doorway in Soho where the air had tasted of smoke and sugar, and she had walked the other way very quickly. "Something is near," she said. "Something is always near," Isolde replied, parting a curtain of trailing ivy at the far side of the clearing. Behind it, an arch of living oak had grown together over a path of pale stones, each one carved with spirals too fine to trace. "The question is whether it is hungry." Rory's hand went to the Fae blade at her hip. The moonsilver hilt was cold even through her jacket, always cold, as if it carried winter in its grain. When she drew it an inch, the blade caught the gold light and gave back a faint silver glow, like frost holding moonlight. The cold steadied her. It always did. They walked the path. Rory watched the stones beneath her boots and found herself counting them without meaning to, then stopped, because the number kept changing. Behind Isolde, the grass remained upright. The Fae seer left no footprints at all, and Rory understood, with a small uneasy chill, that she had been half-expecting to find some, and was disappointed to find none. The sounds changed as they went deeper. First came birdsong, then a murmur that might have been running water, then voices that were almost words. Rory caught a laugh, bright and distant, and then a sigh, and then her own name, spoken softly in her mother's Welsh cadence, and she stopped dead. "Do not answer," Isolde said without turning. "The grove has many mouths. Most of them are lying, and the rest are only hungry." "And you?" "I cannot lie." The seer's voice was almost amused. "I can only choose what to leave unsaid. You will find the distinction useful, I think, in the hours to come." Nyx drifted past Rory, their shadow-form rippling as it crossed the path, and the trailing ivy shivered where they had passed. "Ahead," they whispered. "Light that does not belong to the sun." Through the arch, the path opened into a hollow ringed with stones taller than houses. At its centre, a pool lay perfectly still, reflecting a sky that was not the sky above them: deep amber, streaked with clouds like poured honey. Something glimmered beneath the surface, a ripple of gold and crimson, and the pendant at Rory's throat grew suddenly, unmistakably warm. She took a step forward, and the wildflowers at the water's edge all turned, very slowly, to face her.
