You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The Camden Town platform had been dead for sixty years, and it smelled like it. Harlow Quinn stepped off the last rung of the service ladder and let her eyes adjust to the sodium glow of the emergency lamps. Water dripped somewhere behind the tiles. Her breath hung in front of her face. "Ma'am." Uniformed constable Doyle held a torch steady for her, the beam trembling a little on the curved ceiling. "Scene's been held since half five. Nobody's touched the body except the paramedic, and she's already gone back up top." "Good." Quinn pulled on fresh nitrile gloves, snapping each cuff with a practised tug. "Who found him?" "Urban explorer lot. Filming a documentary, apparently. They came in through the old ventilation shaft off Chalk Farm Road." "Did they go near him?" "Filmed him from the walkway and legged it. Said the place gave them the creeps." Quinn walked toward the centre of the platform. The tiles had once been cream and oxblood, and someone had recently scrubbed a wide patch of them clean. Not scrubbed. Swept. The grime at the edges was still thick and undisturbed, which meant whoever had cleared that circle had done it carefully, and had done it without leaving a single smudge outside the line. DI Gavin Pryce came down the tunnel from the far end, phone in one hand, a paper cup of coffee in the other. He had the rumpled look of a man who'd been called out of a bed he hadn't wanted to leave. "Harlow. Thanks for coming. Sorry, I know it's not your usual patch." "What have we got?" "Male, thirties, Callum Reeve. Known to vice. Small-time dealer, nothing serious. Found on his back in the middle of that." He nodded at the swept circle with his cup. "Looks like he OD'd on something he bought off a bloke in a bad jacket. These kids are cooking up all sorts. Half the market's ketamine and whatever they're calling the blue stuff. And somebody's clearly been playing at witchcraft down here. Candles, chalk, the lot." Quinn crouched at the edge of the circle without stepping inside it. The body lay with arms out, palms up, the shirt open to the navel. His face had gone the colour of wet paper. Thin lines of dried blood ran from both nostrils, and from the corners of his eyes. "No candles," she said. "Sorry?" "You said candles. I see none. I see wax on the tiles, but it's been scraped. The scrape marks are in a spiral. Someone took the candles away and cleaned the spill afterward." Pryce shrugged. "Kids tidy up. Or the paramedics did." "The paramedics didn't tidy a spiral." She let her gaze travel along the floor. "Where are the footprints?" "There's a load of them. We've got our own lot all over the place." "Ours are on the stairs and the walkway. Look at the dust. Nobody has walked on this platform since the last train, except for the man on his back and whoever drew this circle." She pointed at a line of faint prints along the wall, every one of them pressed toward a blank patch of brickwork. "Those go in. They don't come out." Pryce lowered his cup. "Could be the same bloke, going back and forth." "Could be. Except his trainers are dry, and the floor's damp everywhere else. He walked through a puddle to get here, and he never stepped in one again." She tilted her head. "Did you check his shoes?" "We bagged them." "Did anybody look at what's inside?" Pryce had the decency to look uncomfortable. He stepped to the edge of the circle, then glanced back at her, and she waved him on. He crouched near the dead man's boots and angled his phone torch into the tongue of the left shoe. "Christ," he muttered. "Is that a bone?" "Small one. Carved. Look at the edge." Quinn's left wrist ached, the way it always did when she'd been underground too long. She ignored it and turned her attention to the thing lying beside the dead man's right hand, half hidden under the cuff of his jacket. A small brass compass, its casing dulled by a crust of green verdigris. The lid was open. The needle was not resting north. It sat fixed, quivering very slightly, and pointed at the blank brickwork where the footprints ended. "Don't touch that," she said. "I wasn't going to." "I know. I'm telling you because you were about to reach for it." Pryce straightened, pale. "All right. You're spooked. I get it. It's a weird scene." "It's not spooky. It's consistent." She stood and walked to the brick wall. Up close, the mortar lines were too neat. A patch about the height of a man's shoulder had been repointed recently, the grout still pale against the old black. A thin dusting of fine grey powder lay along the base of the wall, and it had not been disturbed by anything except the footprints going in. She raised her wrist. The leather strap of her watch was damp from the tunnel air, and the second hand had stopped at twelve minutes past two. Her father's watch had never stopped. She had replaced the battery twice and it kept dying anyway. She didn't look at it for long. "Gavin. Those fingernails. Look at them." He came over, reluctantly. "What about them?" "They're clean. Not a scrape. But there's a ring of pale residue around his lips, and it's not white powder. It's salt. Coarse salt." She glanced at the circle. "Somebody salted the line. Then he stepped over it, and he died with his palms open as if he were waiting for a hand to take them." "You're saying what, exactly?" "I'm saying a man with a dealer's record and a bag of cheap stimulants does not spend his last night drawing salt circles and walking into walls." She pointed at the mortar. "I'm saying that wall was closed in the last month, and somebody made sure nobody would open it again. And I'm saying the only thing in this tunnel that knew which way to point was that compass." Pryce said nothing for a long moment. Somewhere deep in the tunnel, water kept falling, slow and patient, into a puddle nobody had walked through.
