You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The oak stones stood in a ring at the edge of the bracken, and Rory counted them twice before she stepped between two of them. Nine. The first count had given her ten. "Don't do that," Nyx said at her shoulder. The voice arrived the way a draft does, through a gap she hadn't known was there. "Counting. The grove dislikes being measured." "Noted." Rory kept her hands in her jacket pockets, where the cold had settled into her fingers. London's November had followed her out of the car park at Richmond, and the park's dead bracken had crunched under her boots for a mile. Then the path had simply stopped, and Isolde had walked on without a sound. That was the part Rory kept returning to. Isolde's feet had made no marks in the frost. Rory had looked back once, at the fine silver dust of the frost on the path, and seen only her own prints, and those had ended abruptly, as though the ground had given up on them. Now Isolde moved ahead through the stones, silver hair falling to her waist and catching a light that did not come from the sky. The sky, Rory saw as she looked up, had no clear colour. It was the pale grey of a pearl held to a window, shot through with a faint green that seemed to breathe. "Mind the threshold," Isolde said without turning. Her voice was low and even, and Rory had already learned that every sentence she spoke was true, which made each one harder to trust. "It is older than your language, and it remembers those who forget to respect it." "That's not comforting," Rory said. "It was not meant to comfort. It was meant to be heard." Rory stepped over the root-knot at the stones' base and felt it: a shiver through her boots, then up her spine, the way a bass note hums through a floor. The Veil. She had felt it before, faintly, when a rift had opened over the Thames two winters ago and she had spent a night at the water's edge with her eyes half shut, seeing a shimmer where the lamplight should have been. Here it was not a shimmer. Here it was a membrane, thin and warm, and they were passing through it like swimmers through cold water. Then the frost was gone. Rory stopped. Beneath her boots, instead of dead leaves, was turf so dense and green it looked upholstered. Wildflowers pushed through it in every direction: foxglove and harebell, white clover, something with petals like spilt ink. A bee the size of her thumb hovered over a blossom, wings flickering too fast to see, and the sound of it rose and fell in a melody she almost recognised. "It's summer," she said. Her breath did not fog. "It is always summer here," Isolde said. "Summer, and the hour after the hour you have lost. Do not pick the flowers. Some of them will ask you to stay." "Which ones?" "Those that answer when you speak to them." Rory looked at the ink-petalled bloom beside her boot, and then, against her better judgement, she looked away. They walked. The path wound between trees whose trunks were grey and smooth as bone, with bark that rippled faintly when Rory was not looking directly at it. Water ran somewhere close, though she could see none. The air smelled of crushed thyme and rain and something sharper underneath, like a struck match. Nyx drifted at the edge of her vision. Rory had grown used to the Shade's outline, the tall humanoid silhouette that seemed made of the same stuff as the deepest hour of night, faint violet eyes like coals under ash. In this light, though, Nyx seemed almost solid. The shadow they cast on the turf was thinner than it should have been, as though the grove were drinking it. "You're quiet," Rory said. "I am listening," Nyx replied. "The shadows here are old. They have forgotten their names, but they remember mine." A pause, a rustle like wind through paper. "They do not like it." "Should I be worried?" "You should be attentive. Those are different things." The pendant at Rory's throat gave a small, distinct pulse, warm against her collarbone. She touched it through her shirt. The Heartstone had been quiet since Dymas had let its last thread of heat fade, but now it hummed, a faint red throb like a heartbeat under thin skin. She glanced at Isolde's back. "It reacts to Hel," Rory said. "Near a portal." "It reacts to what it remembers," Isolde said. "Whether that is the same thing is for you to decide." That was not an answer, and it was deliberately not an answer, and Rory's jaw tightened. She kept walking. The fae blade on her hip was cold as a river stone, even through her coat. She had carried it since Isolde had given it to her, and it had never once warmed to her hand. Now it seemed colder still, and when she passed a patch of moonlight falling through a gap in the canopy, its sheath gave off a faint silver glimmer, though the light was not moonlight at all. It was simply the grove's own brightness, filtered and strange. The path opened into a clearing. In its centre stood a pool, black and perfectly still, ringed by seven flat stones. Something lay beneath its surface: a shape pale and long, too regular to be a fallen branch. Rory stepped closer, her breath catching, and the surface rippled once, outward, as if something beneath had turned over in its sleep. "Do not kneel," Isolde said quietly. "Not yet. Look first. The grove is still deciding whether you are a guest." Rory looked. The shape beneath the water was a stair, descending into dark, and at its foot something glimmered crimson, pulsing with the same slow warmth as the stone at her throat. Her pendant answered it, and the grove went very still around them, as though it were holding its breath.
