You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The rift hid between two of the old oaks, and if Aurora looked at it straight on, there was nothing to see at all. Only when she let her gaze slide past did it catch her: a shimmer in the dark, like heat rising off summer tarmac, folded into the rough shape of a door. "The wall wears thin where it is rubbed," Isolde said, "and here it has been rubbed a long while. The longest night loosens it further." Her silver hair moved though there was no wind. "We have until dawn." "And if we're not back by dawn?" Isolde's lavender eyes caught the shimmer and held it. "Then the wall mends with you on the far side of it." No hedging. No maybe. Rory had learned to appreciate that about a woman who could not lie, even when the truth arrived like a slap. Nyx went first. They simply leaned into the shimmer and poured through, six feet of living shadow thinning to smoke and vanishing, their violet eyes the last thing to go. Then Isolde, stepping as though through a curtain, leaving no mark on the frost-stiff grass. Rory took a breath. Against her sternum, under two layers of wool, the Heartstone flared hot — hotter than it had ever burned, hot enough that she hissed through her teeth — and she stepped after them. The cold took her first. Not winter cold. The cold of nothing, of a space that had never been meant for a body, pressing in from every direction at once. Sound died. Her heartbeat went with it, or went somewhere she couldn't follow. Then the world exhaled — Warmth. Light. Smell. She stumbled three steps and caught herself against a post of black wood, and stood breathing under a sky the color of amber. Not sunset amber. Not clouded. A deep, sourceless, honeyed glow, everywhere and from nowhere, as if the air itself were lit from inside. There was no sun. There were no shadows worth the name, which was maybe why Nyx stood out so starkly, a tall cut of darkness in a world that had forgotten dark. "Don't," Nyx whispered, and their voice came to her like wind through a cracked window, "breathe too deeply of the wanting." Too late. The smell had already gotten into her — caramelized sugar and woodsmoke, roasting fat, cinnamon, fruit so ripe it stood one breath from rot. Her mouth flooded. Her stomach clenched with a hunger that wasn't hers, too big, too old, a hunger that had been waiting in this place for company. "Hunger here is a leash," Isolde said serenely. "Do not pick it up." Rory swallowed hard and made herself catalog instead, the way she did when a delivery route went sideways. Facts first. Feelings later. They stood at the edge of a vineyard that ran to the horizon in black rows, every vine heavy with grapes the size of plums, each one dark as a bruise. A road of pale gravel wound between the rows, down a long slope toward a cluster of towers in the distance — pale spires ribbed around a great low hall, their windows glowing like hearths. Even at this distance she could see the grounds around it glittering, tents and torches and movement, and she could hear it: music, thin and sweet as spun sugar, threaded through with a clatter that might have been kitchens and might have been laughter and might have been neither. "Belphegor's house," Nyx murmured, following her gaze. "It was smaller, the last age I walked here." "You've been here before?" "Once. Briefly. I left before the dessert course." Their violet eyes dimmed, which Rory had learned was the closest a Shade came to a shudder. They moved down between the rows. The gravel crunched under Rory's boots like small teeth. The ground here was soft black loam, rich as cake, and she noticed two things at once: that her boots sank and printed deep, and that Isolde's feet left nothing at all. Nyx, solid, left long narrow impressions. Anyone walking this road behind them would read their passing like a headline. "Problem," Rory said, and pointed. Nyx looked back, and then simply loosened — edges going smoky, form sagging into a drift of dark that rolled along their trail and swallowed the footprints whole. When they drew themselves up again they were a little thinner, a little less there. "Convenient," Rory said. "Creepy, but convenient." "Eat nothing offered," Isolde said as they walked, in the tone of a woman reciting a shopping list. "Drink nothing, though it gleams. Thank no one. Give no name that is yours, and take no gift, for here a gift is a hook and a thank-you is a thread, and they are patient with their lines." "My gran had the same rules for the fair folk," Rory said. "Good to know they travel." "Your gran," said Isolde, "listened well." Rory reached out despite herself and touched a grape. It was warm as a coin held in a fist, and she could have sworn it beat once, faintly, against her fingertip. She pulled her hand back. Farther down the row, one of the grapes had split, and a bee the size of her thumb wallowed in the black juice, too drunk to fly. It bumped against her shoulder as it passed and went droning on, fat and happy and wrong. The rows gave way to an orchard on a low rise, and Rory stopped walking. The trees were silver-barked, their branches bowed under fruit that glowed — faintly, from within, like lanterns with something alive burning in them. Plums, maybe, or pears, if pears could be translucent, their skins lit gold and rose and pale green. Below the orchard ran a stream, slow and dark and red, and it did not smell of water. A bridge of white stone arched over it, and on the far bank the sugar smell intensified until it was almost a sound. Rory laughed. It burst out of her, one short note, because the whole thing was absurd, a wine river and lantern fruit under a honey sky, her gran's warnings come true at the bottom of the world. "Do not admire too loudly," Isolde said softly. "Admiration is a kind of knocking." "Right." Rory pressed her lips together. But the wonder stayed, lodged under her ribs next to the fear, the two of them taking up the same space. The smell found its source past the orchard: a long pavilion open to the air, copper pans hanging from its beams like chimes, fires burning low and blue-white beneath them. And people. Chefs — a dozen at least, whites stained and sleeves rolled, working stations with the silent, seamless rhythm of a brigade mid-service. Rory had spent enough evenings loitering in the Golden Empress's kitchen waiting on orders to know that rhythm in her bones. These were mortals. That was the thing that stopped her breath. Mortals, here, in Hel — and every one of them wore, on the left wrist, a mark like a small grey crescent of teeth. "Contracted," Nyx whispered. "Signed away. Some for debt, some for pride, some for a single taste of the right thing at the wrong moment." One of them looked up. A boy, nineteen at most, dark hair stuck to his forehead with sweat, a silver knife in his hand and a board of glowing fruit before him. His eyes went to Rory and widened — not at Nyx's impossible silhouette, not at Isolde's waist-length silver, but at her. At her ordinary, unmarked wrist. At the small crescent scar there, white and meaningless, where no brand sat. He stared at her like a man through the window of a passing train. Then his mouth shaped a single word, silent and precise. Run. A bell began to toll from the direction of the palace, deep and unhurried, and the whole pavilion came alive around her — pans lifted, flames leapt, the boy's head snapped back down to his knife as if pulled by a string. On the road below, torches were gathering. A procession wound toward the great hall: litters carried by shapes that were almost people, and shapes that had given up trying; a roasted boar the size of a small car borne past on a bier, skin lacquered gold, still steaming; towers of sugarwork carried like reliquaries. At Rory's hip, the moonsilver dagger went so cold it ached through the sheath, and kept getting colder. "The boy who spins sugar sings tonight in the high house," Isolde murmured. "His name is on the menu of renewal. When the last course is served, his signature sets like sugar-work — hard, and for a very long time." Lin Cheung. Yu-Fei's nephew, who had won a pastry competition in October and vanished before the prize ceremony, leaving a missing poster and an aunt who had never once asked Rory for anything — who had simply stopped cooking the table-six special, because it had been his favorite. "Then we don't leave without him," Rory said. The bell tolled again. The pendant at her throat pulsed warm, tugging faintly backward, toward the rift, toward home, the way a compass aches for north. Ahead, the palace windows burned like a hundred open ovens, and the road shone pale between the black vines. Run, the boy had mouthed. Rory settled her hand on the cold hilt at her hip and started down the slope. "Too late for that."
