You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The Veil closed behind them with a sound like a breath held too long, and winter let go of Aurora's bones. Heat took its place. No sun stood in the amber sky. The light came from the air itself, from the gold haze hanging over the terraces, and it lay against her skin the way a proving drawer's warmth lies against a baker's forearm. She shrugged out of her coat and stood holding it, staring. Richmond's frost had vanished. Vineyards stepped down the slope in long green-black tiers, and every cluster of grapes glowed from within, faint as banked coals, strung along the vines like lanterns for a festival that had no beginning and would not end. "Oh," Aurora said. Nothing cleverer came. She looked down to fix her footing on the unfamiliar slope and froze a second time. "Where's my shadow?" The ground beneath her boots, soft as cake crumb and warm as a hearthstone, held nothing. No silhouette. She lifted her hand. The light accepted it from every angle at once and gave nothing back. "Dymas is a table set for one." Isolde stood a few paces ahead, silver hair moving in a wind Aurora couldn't feel. The dust on the path bore two sets of prints and would never bear a third. "Nothing here is permitted a companion. Not even your darkness." "Fire without shadow. Fruit with its own lamps." Nyx's voice arrived the way weather arrives, low and everywhere. Their tall outline had gone soft at the edges, ink in warm water. "I have not owned a shadow in four centuries. I find I miss yours, Carter." "Stay close, then. I'll lend you the concept." They went down between the vines. The smells came in layers, each one thicker than the last — cinnamon smoke, yeast, honey, fat turning on a spit somewhere beyond the slope. Aurora's stomach clenched hard enough to hurt. She'd eaten before they crossed. A full meal, out of Yu-Fei's kitchen, not four hours ago. "The hunger isn't mine," she said, naming it before it could name her. "It's the postcode's." "Hold to that thought." Isolde's lavender eyes caught the amber light and gave back violet. "It is the only ration you are allowed." An orchard replaced the vines at the second terrace. The trees grew low and heavy, and the fruit on the nearest branch stopped Aurora mid-stride. A plum, dark as a bruise, and from it rose a smell she knew better than her own handwriting — her mother's cawl, lamb and leek, the Cardiff kitchen on a wet Sunday, steam on the window and her father's voice in the hall. Her hand was already reaching when Isolde's fingers closed around her wrist. "One bite signs. Two bites witness. Three bites judge." "It smells like — " "It smells like whatever will open your mouth. That is the tree's whole profession." Aurora pulled her arm back and wiped her palm on her jeans, though she'd touched nothing. The plum swung in a breeze that wasn't there. Somewhere deeper in the orchard, another tree offered Eva's burnt toast and cheap coffee, and she walked faster. A ribbon of bronze script stretched across the path at the third terrace, strung between two posts of black wood, the letters sliding over one another like eels in a bucket. Nyx stopped three paces short of it. "Hel-script. Cross it and it unspools me. I would arrive at the bottom of this hill as a rumour." Aurora drew the moonsilver dagger from her boot. Cold bit her palm, glorious cold, the first cold thing since the frost. The blade drank the amber light and gave back moon. She swept it through the ribbon and the ward parted like burnt thread, both ends snapping back with a smell of scorched cinnamon. "Useful gift," Nyx murmured. "Isolde gives good presents." "Isolde gives exactly the presents the road requires. It is a different talent and a colder one." The man they found below the ward stood up to his elbows in flour, pruning shears in one white hand. Mid-forties, ginger going grey, a forearm branded with a circle of script that crawled whenever Aurora looked away from it. He looked them over the way chefs look at deliveries, weighing, and his eyes snagged on the warmth of them. "You're breathing. Both of you. Contractors don't stay warm." His accent had Leeds in it, worn smooth. "Bram Hales. Sous. Twenty-one years left on my ticket, then I'm free." "Twenty-one years?" Aurora said. "For what?" "Lost a competition." He snipped a glowing cluster loose and dropped it in his basket. "Won one before that. Winning resets the clock. That's the joke of it down here. You climb, you stay. The Prince's Table has never once set a soul free. It just promotes them." "Prince Belphegor." His shears stopped. "Don't say it with appetite. Names are seasoning here." He stepped closer, and his hand closed around her left wrist, quick as a chef checking a joint. His thumb found the small crescent scar on the inside, the pale half-moon she'd carried since she was eight. "Unmarked," he breathed. "Keep it that way. Whatever you came for, don't sit. Don't taste. If a steward offers you a napkin, run." His gaze dropped to her collarbone, where the chain of the Heartstone had slipped free of her shirt. The crimson stone, thumbnail-small, pulsed against her skin like a second pulse, hotter with every step down the slope. "Dymasian work," Bram said. "Where does a warm thing get a Heartstone?" "A gift." "In Gluttony, love, gifts are hooks." He let go of her wrist and turned back to his vines. "Walk on. You're bad for my conscience, and I need it quiet to work." They climbed the next rise and the realm opened beneath them. A river ran gold through the valley floor, thick and slow, and flat barges moved along it poled by figures in aprons, their cargo stacked under cloth. Past the river, fields stretched where the wheat had given up pretending — loaves grew straight off the stalk, crusted and steaming, rows of them to the horizon. The drone of bees came off the hives like a cello section tuning, bees fat as plums hauling themselves through the heavy air. And at the valley's heart stood the Hall. A pergola of living vine ran half a mile, hung with the lantern-grapes in their thousands, and beneath it the tables went on and on, white cloth, gold plate, steam rising off dishes that walked to the tables on their own legs of scented smoke. The diners glittered. Even at this distance Aurora caught the wrongness of them — smiles with too much architecture, laughter that went on one breath past the joke. A horn sounded. Every head in the Hall lifted at once, the way a brigade lifts at the expediter's call. "Course change," Aurora said. Her delivery brain mapped it without permission — a pass that long would need forty runners, a kitchen the size of a city block, a hierarchy deeper than anything Yu-Fei ever dreamed of. "Yu-Fei would weep. Then invoice someone." "What she would do," Isolde said, "is eat. Remember whose daughter you are in this place, and admire nothing aloud. Praise is an appetite. This realm collects appetites." The hunger sat in Aurora like a tenant rearranging furniture. She tucked the Heartstone under her shirt. It burned against her sternum, steady, insistent, pulling toward the Hall the way a compass pulls north — whatever they'd crossed the Veil to find lay down there, under the vine-light, among the smiles. "If I lose my shape down there," Nyx said, edges already fraying in the sourceless gold, "carry me out in a wineskin. I have always wanted to travel as wine." "You'd be corked for eternity." "Then choose a good vintage." Aurora settled the Fae blade loose in her boot, checked the pendant's pull one more time, and started down the slope into the gold, the other two falling in beside her, three sets of footprints becoming two.
