You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The rift closed behind them with a sound like a book shutting. Rory stood with her arms slightly out, waiting for her stomach to catch up with the rest of her. Against her sternum, under her shirt, the Heartstone pendant radiated heat. Not pain. Eagerness. It had warmed as they approached the tear in the Veil, but here it pressed against her skin like a dog that had caught a scent. Then she looked up. The sky was amber — not sunset amber, not any amber that belonged to weather. A sun hung low and swollen, the colour of clotted honey, and it did not move. Rory watched it long enough to be certain. No drift. No sink. Light lay across the land at a permanent late-afternoon slant, thick enough to touch. "Breathe," Nyx whispered. The Shade poured out of the seam behind her, smoke remembering a body, and stood taller than Rory had ever seen them — six and a half feet of living dark, violet eyes burning brighter under this sky. "First time in another realm. The lungs argue. Let them lose." "The air's wrong." "The air's fine. It's the light. It's been standing still for a long time." Isolde came through last, bare feet settling onto the vineyard path. Even here, the violet-grey dust refused her heels. She tilted her face toward the stuck sun, silver hair stirring in a wind that smelled of caramel and woodsmoke. "Hours here are coins," the Seer said. "Spend them walking." Rows of vines ran downhill on either side of the path, farther than sight could follow. Their bark gleamed like dark glass, and the grapes hung in heavy clusters — translucent, each one holding a coal of light at its heart. Rory's courier brain mapped the terrain out of habit. Exits: none. Sightlines: the rows, straight as ledger lines, converging on a haze of smoke in the far distance. "I've seen worse layouts," she said. "Newport on a match day." She reached toward the nearest cluster. The light inside the grapes pulsed — once, twice — and found her rhythm. Her pulse. The whole cluster leaned toward her fingers, stems creaking, and the skin of the nearest fruit parted along a seam that had not existed a moment before. A seam shaped like lips. "What is swallowed here swallows back," Isolde said. Rory withdrew her hand. The cluster followed the motion, straining, and the seam sealed itself. The light inside the fruit kept time with her heart for three more beats before it lost interest. "Right," she said. "No snacking." They walked. The Fae blade at her hip stayed cold against the heat of the place — colder here, offended by it, and she found her fingers resting on its hilt more than once. The path bent around a terraced rise, and that was where they found the man. He stood on a ladder between the rows, pruning vines with shears of pale bone. Rory clocked the fleece first. Supermarket logo, sun-faded, the zip broken and pinned shut with a nappy pin. London. The man himself had gone thin in the way of people who had stopped expecting meals to satisfy. He saw them and went very still. "What year is it?" His voice cracked on the second word. "Twenty twenty-five." He laughed. It came out wrong, too high, and he pressed the shears against his forearm to stop it. His sleeve rode up. Below his wrist, lines of script had been inked into the skin — and when Rory looked away from them, they moved. "Twelve years for me," he said. "Or the same year, twelve deep. Can't tell. Kitchens don't have clocks." "You're from Earth." "I was from Croydon." He spat into the vines. "Now I'm from the kitchens." "What's your name?" His gaze flicked to her mouth, then away, frightened. "Keep yours in your teeth where it belongs. Don't give it to anything that asks. Half the menu here is names." He turned back to the vine, and the shears opened and closed, opened and closed. "And whatever they offer you down there — don't sit. The food's just food. The chairs are the contract." Isolde inclined her head to him, the way one acknowledges a colleague. The man did not look at her again. Rory wanted to ask more — how, who, is there a way out — but his shoulders had climbed to his ears, and the rows on either side of them had gone quiet in a way that felt like listening. They left him to his pruning. The path dropped into a valley where a river ran bronze under the amber sky. It smelled of cinnamon and fermentation, sharp enough to sting the eyes. Fish leapt in silver arcs, and every leap shed sparks that hung in the air a moment, fading, like the ghosts of the fish themselves. They crossed on a bridge of pale fused bone, knuckled down its spine like vertebrae, warm underfoot. "Last sky I stood under that wasn't Earth's was grey," Nyx said. Their whisper carried oddly here, fuller, almost a voice. "English. It rained on the day I stopped being Aldric. I remember thinking the rain was rude." "Nearly four hundred years of brooding," Rory said, "and that's your takeaway." "The rain was very rude." On the far bank, the land opened up, and Rory stopped walking. The tables started a quarter of a mile off and did not stop. Long white boards, shoulder to shoulder, running in ranks toward a hill of terraced gardens — hundreds of them, thousands, set with gold plate and glass that caught the stuck light. Figures sat along the benches, hundreds of figures, moving slow as sap. A carver worked a roast the size of a coffin, and as Rory watched, the meat knit itself back together under the knife, whole again, ready to be carved forever. Music threaded through it all. Strings, laughter, glasses — and under everything, a drum. Slow. Patient. Slow enough to mistake for her own pulse, until the pendant against her chest matched it. Beat for beat. Rory yanked the chain out from under her shirt. The crimson stone glowed from within, deep and content, throbbing in time with the distant drums. At her hip, the Fae blade went colder. "It's in sync," she said. "The pendant. It's keeping time with this place." "A key that warms itself," Isolde said, "has found its door." "That's not comforting." "No." Above the tables, crowning the terraced hill, a manor rose the colour of old gold and bone. Smoke poured from a dozen chimneys — and fell. It folded downward, fat and fragrant, rolling back over the gardens and into the vines below, a sky feeding its own roots. Rory breathed it in, and under the cinnamon, under the char and the spice, she caught it. Her mother's kitchen. Sunday. Rain on the Cardiff windows, gravy on the stove, her father home from court early and singing in the hall. She shut the door on that thought, hard, and the smell went with it. Her hand had found the dagger's hilt without asking her. "You can smell his kitchens from here," Isolde said. "That is the oldest trick in Dymas. It smells like the house where you were loved. Whoever you are." "Belphegor." "The Prince keeps a chair for every guest." Isolde's lavender eyes held the distant tables, the slow diners, the meat that would not end. "The meal began before your grandmother's grandmother. It has not concluded. Look at the chairs, Aurora Carter, and count the empty ones." Rory counted. She stopped at eleven, because the empty chairs were arranged the way a table is set before company arrives — napkins folded, glasses polished, waiting with terrible good manners. "Stay close," Nyx whispered. "And if anything down there calls you by name—" "It won't get the rest of me." Rory stepped onto the first white flagstone of the feast grounds. It thrummed beneath her boot — one slow beat, in time with the drums, in time with the pendant, in time with her own stubborn heart. The music swelled somewhere in the ranks of tables, bright and endless, and a thousand glasses began to rise. She kept walking.
