You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The frost ended at the standing stones. Rory noticed it the moment she ducked between the ancient oaks — one breath sharp with December, the next soft as April, and under her boots the frost gave way to grass gone green and reckless, wildflowers open everywhere like the season had simply been overruled. "You say that like it's comforting," she said, and Isolde smiled without turning. The seer stood at the center of the clearing, silver hair loose to her waist, lavender eyes fixed on a stretch of empty air. She had not left a single footprint in the wet soil. Rory had watched her walk the whole length of the grove and the ground had simply declined to remember her. "The Veil is thin tonight," Isolde said. "The solstice leans on it, and it leans back. But thin is not the same as open." "And the thing that watches the thin places?" "The Wardens mend the wounds that bleed." The voice came from everywhere and nowhere, a whisper riding a wind Rory couldn't feel. Nyx poured out of the shadow of the nearest stone and assembled themselves into something roughly person-shaped, six feet and then some, violet eyes glowing faintly in the gloom. "This one is a scar. Scars go unguarded." Rory's hand went to the pendant under her coat. The crimson stone, no bigger than her thumbnail, had been warm since Richmond's gates; now it was hot as a held coin, and its faint inner glow had quickened to a slow pulse. She could feel the rhythm of it against her sternum, patient as a second heartbeat. "Show me," she said. Isolde lifted one hand and pressed her palm against nothing. The air bent. Rory saw it then — a shimmer, a distortion, like heat rising off summer tarmac, impossible on a night cold enough to sting. Through it, the park was gone. Through it was amber. "Ladies first," Nyx murmured, and there was something in the whisper that might have been a laugh. Rory went through. It was like being held underwater by a hand that knew exactly how long she could stand it. Pressure at her ears, cold in her teeth, the world inhaling — and then it exhaled her, and she stood on a hillside in a warmth that wrapped around her like a kitchen at full service. The sky was amber. Not sunset amber, not any amber with a sun behind it — the light came from everywhere and nowhere, sourceless, honey-colored, as if the whole realm were suspended in the last hour of a golden afternoon that had been going on for a thousand years. Below her, the hill fell away in terraced vines, row upon row of them, heavy with grapes the size of plums and the color of— She pulled the pendant out of her collar. The color of that. Exactly that. "Oh," she said. The air smelled of fermentation and woodsmoke, of ripe fruit splitting its skin, of something spiced — cardamom, maybe, or charred citrus — riding underneath. Somewhere downslope, music: a stringed instrument she had no name for, laughter, the bright percussion of glasses. A bell, far off. The chop of knives, rhythmic as a train. Nyx came through the tear like smoke through a keyhole and recoiled. Their edges, usually so sharp, had gone soft and uncertain. "The light," they whispered. "It comes from all directions. Even my shadow is thin here." They drew closer to Rory's heels than Rory had ever known them to stand, and their violet eyes burned brighter against the colorless glare, the way a candle shows itself at noon. Isolde stepped through last. The dark soil did not mark her. They descended between the vine rows. Rory's boots sank with every step; the earth was rich, almost black, and it smelled of more than earth — of iron, of sweetness turned one degree too far. The leaves overhead were veined with gold. A bee the size of her thumb wallowed past her face, fat and slow and plainly drunk, and she ducked it out of long habit, the same reflex that had saved her from a hundred low-hanging mirrors on delivery routes. At the third terrace she stopped. Something glinted in the soil at the vine's root. She crouched, brushed the dirt aside with two fingers, and went still. A stone. Deep crimson, thumbnail-sized, faintly lit from within. As she watched, it pulsed — once, slow — and the pendant against her chest pulsed with it. All down the row, half-buried in the dark earth, other small red lights answered, a field of patient heartbeats. "Nyx." Her voice came out lower than she meant. "It's a crop." "Heartstone," the Shade whispered. "Grown in the roots. I had wondered where yours came from." A pause, the whisper tilting toward dry. "Now we know someone here grew it, cut it, set it in silver, and posted it to a delivery girl in London. The question of the hour is whether it is a gift or a claim check." "Those," said Isolde, stepping over the stones without touching them, "are rarely different things." The road at the foot of the hill was paved in something like pressed amber, rutted by cart wheels, and it wound through an orchard where the fruit hung like lanterns, luminous, blushing from within. Rory's mouth watered, which alarmed her distantly; she wasn't hungry, she was certain she wasn't hungry, and yet the smell of the orchard reached into some older part of her and turned a key. She found the man by the roadside, filling a basket with herbs. He was human — that was the strange, small shock of him — middle-aged, flour still dusted into the creases of his apron, and around his right wrist ran a band of gold writing, tiny and intricate, like a bracelet made of a contract's fine print. He looked up, and his face did something complicated before it settled on pleasant. "New?" he said. "You're early for the seating. Kitchens are down the hill, love, follow the smoke — but there's no rush. The Prince's table doesn't sit till the horn." His eyes were kind. That was the worst of it. They were kind, and somewhere behind the kindness there was an absence, like a room with the furniture taken out. "Suppliers," Rory said smoothly, before Isolde could speak. "From out of town. We're expected up at the hall." Her thumb found the crescent scar on her left wrist, an old nervous habit, and she made it stop. "Ah." He nodded, satisfied, and plucked a plum from the hedge beside him, glowing faintly, and offered it up. "For the road, then. First one's always free." The pendant beat once, hard, against her heart. "A meal here is a signature," Isolde said softly, "and a second bite a seal. Some doors you may walk out of, and some you may only be carried." The man laughed, not unkindly, and bit into the plum himself. Juice ran down his chin, dark as garnets. "Suit yourself." He chewed, and for a moment his face went somewhere far away. "I was somebody, you know. Leeds. A bakery off Kirkgate. I remember my mam's kitchen better than I remember her face, isn't that queer?" He wiped his chin. "They let me keep the recipes, though. Kind of them, don't you think?" "Very," Rory managed, and walked on before her face could say what her voice wouldn't. Behind them, faintly, she heard him humming. A nursery tune. She knew it. Her mother had sung it. "Was it true?" she asked Isolde, when the orchard had swallowed him. "What you said about the food." "I do not say untrue things," Isolde replied, which was not, Rory noted, the same as yes. "But there are hungrier things than tables ahead of us, and it is those you should feed with your attention." The road crested a rise, and the hall came into view. It was less a building than an appetite given architecture — terraces stacked on terraces, banners the color of wine and marrow, a dozen chimneys breathing spiced smoke, windows glowing like coals. Kitchens big enough to quarter in, and that was only what she could see. The music came from there. The laughter. The bell. And the pendant was hot now, hot enough that she lifted the chain off her neck and held the stone away from her skin, and still it burned, urgent, a small red star pulling toward its constellation. At her spine, wrapped in cloth and tucked into her belt, the moonsilver blade sat cold as a splinter of winter. No moon here to wake it — the leaf-shaped metal stayed dark, but the cold of it against her back was almost a comfort. Isolde's gift. Made to cut wards. Made for demons. "Tell me that's not where it's pointing," Rory said. "It is not pointing," Isolde said. "It is remembering." Then the horn sounded — one deep note that rolled across the vineyards and made the drunk bees wobble in the air — and the great gates below swung open. A figure came through them and began up the road toward the three of them, unhurried, elegant, tall in a way that had nothing to do with height. It wore a steward's silver chain. It was smiling. Even at this distance, Rory could see there were too many teeth in it, arranged with terrible precision. "Nyx," she murmured. "Your honest opinion." The Shade had gone very still beside her, what little shadow they had pulled tight around their frame like a coat against weather. "My honest opinion," they whispered, "is that we have not found the feast. The feast has found us." The steward stopped at a courteous distance and bowed, deep and correct, and when it spoke, its voice was gracious as poured wine. "The bearer of the heartstone," it said. "Prince Belphegor has kept your seat warm. You are expected at table." Rory looked at Isolde. Isolde's lavender eyes gave nothing back but the faintest inclination of her head — a riddle with the answer filed off. She looked at Nyx, and the Shade's violet gaze flicked once toward the gates, once toward the tear far behind them, and she read the math in it plainly: they could run, and be run down, or they could walk in like guests. She straightened her coat, settled the cold blade against her spine, and did what four years of Cardiff Pre-Law and two years of London doorsteps had taught her to do when standing in front of something that could ruin her. She smiled first. "Then we shouldn't keep the Prince waiting," she said, and walked down toward the gates, into the smoke and the music, the pendant beating against her heart like something glad to be home.
